Just bumping this thread up again as I spotted a red V8 FC on Ebay - Ebay page

Ok, bit of a follow up - the engine hasn\'t had a rebuild to date, but its had things like a new clutch and tyres recently.

At about 70k how much life if left in the engine, and how much would i be looking at for a rebuild??

Its a black one, which is probably my fave TII colour - i do like the red ones, but they do tend to get a bit dull and faded after a while.

Some slightly more boring questions:

I\'m going to be using it daily if i get it, what are the TIIs like for fuel consumption around town and on the motorway? I\'ve heard horror stories of single figure MPGs from Gen1 or 3s but haven\'t heard too much info on the Gen2.

Also, what cheap/free and easy mods are there to do? Binning the cat may well be an option (depending on whether its a \'91 or \'2 J reg) for a start, but brakes/suspension and breathing mods will all be in order.

Oh yeah, and does anyone want to buy a \'90 red mk1 MX5?! :D Mine might be up for sale pretty sharpish if all goes well!

I\'m looking at a Gen2 FC Turbo II next weekend and need a little help - basically what sort of questions should i ask?

The car has done around 72,000 miles - so i presume i should really be looking for a recent rebuild history or expect it to need one in the immediate future. How often should the oil be changed on these - is around 3k miles about right?

The car is a J reg, taxed and tested with 72k under its belt and sounds in fairly good condition and well looked after - what sort of money is it worth?

Also are there any RX7 specialists in the Essex/London area that I could get to check it over to check compression etc?

2nd generation RX-7's / engine rebuilds

No, I\'m still interested in it but I think the buyer is asking a bit much for it considering a rebuild is highly likely to be needed soon. I\'m not in any particular rush, just waiting for the right one to pop up.

Just a quick question on rebuilds - if a Turbo II has got 100k miles under its belt, is it possible that it wouldn\'t yet require a rebuild? There\'s a car that I\'m considering, but to my mind it seems like its probably overdue for a rebuild and would need a few k spent on it to sort the engine.

Great looking car, how much did you pay for it if you don\'t mind me asking?

Congrats on the other new arrival too! :D

General Technical / Gen1 Engine transplant

Mike, really nice car by the way!

Just out of interest, how much would a replacement 12a cost? Was really financial reasons governing the idea - ie the MX5 engine returning about 30mpg not matter how hard its pushed and be a tad easier on the pocket service wise.

I\'ve never driven a rotary though - so if it turned out to be wallet friendly, then i could be quite easily convinced to go with that option

Thats what i thought would be said!

Trouble is this shell is in good condition but lacking the engine and gearbox - and sourcing a replacement rotary could be a tad expensive. The other idea was a V6/V8 transplant, but i\'m pretty keen on having an economical engine as it\'d be used daily, and i could do without sky-high fuel bills or expensive rebuilds/servicing.

The MX5 engine seemed a pretty obvious choice for me knowing how they can be tuned etc and still return a decent MPG.

Good point about the MX5 i suppose, but for some inexplicable reason a gen1 RX7 really appeals - i suppose its the 80s child in me coming to the surface! ;)

General Technical / Gen1 Engine transplant

Hi guys and girls,

This is my first post so excuse me if this is in the wrong area.

I currently own a mk1 MX5, and fancy "upgrading" to a RX7 fairly soon, and have found a nice shell locally.

I quite fancy the idea of putting a "different" engine in it, but running/servicing costs are at the forefront of my mind. Having become quite involved with MX5s, the idea of putting a 1.8 MX5 engine and gearbox into the Gen1 shell seems to make sense. Turbocharging it with a HKS kit should make it good for around 180bhp and still return a pretty good fuel economy.

Has anyone tackled a project like this before? Is it possible? Am i being a heretic by even suggesting it?! ;)

As i said, i\'m pretty new to the RX7 scene so any help would be great.
