Alas the time where I could change my mind on the twins has long past (and has a very long story).

Airpump gone, racing cat going back on, but the 'new' tuner is not optimistic.

Friendly garage does seem to be the ask  :-[

Hi,

I recently converted to single turbo on the advice of a UK tuner. The main reason being my stock twins had issues and they are "getting hard to find. The single should be more reliable"

A mechanic has just informed me that my car will fail UK MOT emissions test in current form. It also smells like an open can of petrol.

A different tuner told me that the single turbo basically bypasses a bunch of emissions stuff on the Apexi ECU and so failure is near certain.

Does anyone have a solution please?  :(

3rd generation RX-7's / Re: how much smoke is ok..?

Hey Clive,

I am not premixing. I have only just got the single turbo done, now with about 200 miles on it, so I cannot be sure about much yet unfortunately. I cannot be sure my oil level before but have topped up so I can monitor.

I should also note that my oil warning light came on today despite being half full and showing a pressure of over 4. It occurred after the heavy acceleration deacceleration event I described and stayed on for about 10 mins.

3rd generation RX-7's / how much smoke is ok..?
January 14, 2024, 12:18:12 PM
In the last 5000 miles I have had an engine rebuild and a single turbo conversion by a long standing tuner here in the UK. It runs low boost and sits about 300bhp. The car currently runs decat for the first time.

So my question is, given the mods, no cat, and the fact the car was built in 1993, what level of smoke should I expect?

If I accelerate hard in first, say to 7000 rpm, then lift (rather than change up as would be expected in normal driving) I get noticeable smoking, but not severe, for a second or so.

I know this is an odd manoeuvre but I changed to single turbo because my old stock twins could white out two lanes of motorway if I did that in second gear.

What about in terms of general driving. Should I expect to see some exhaust output?

Thoughts and experiences welcome

I keep an eye on autotrader as I am reaching that point sadly.

The majority seem to sit around 9k, though seem to vary quite a bit in terms of what that gets you. How quick or for how much they are selling though I am not sure..

Good luck

Am I close? I can find no pictures and the only thread I have seen stated "located on back iron next to oil pressure sensor on drivers side."

Hi all,

hopefully these are quick/easy questions to answer, if someone will be so kind..

I have just come to change my brake discs and found there are no securing screws in them (see pic). from Youtube it seems there are not present on most cars. Do I need to buy and fit securing screws?

The reason I am changing them is that I purchased some RX-7 FD Hawk Fast Road pads, but these have been ineffective whilst cold. Has anyone got any experience of these?

I have a temperature spike issue (that I am really hoping is not...). I was monitoring with my FC Commander, but recent sun and heat exposure seems to have cooked my LCD display :'(
I purchased temperature gauge and now want to temporarily rig it up. I think this is the temperature sender for the dash (bottom right). Can anyone confirm? I am assuming I can remove the plug and run a temporary sender feed to the powered gauge..?

My hope is that with pads replaced and gauge in place I can take her for a run. Then I will see if it is bad, or very bad..

Insuring your rotary / Track day insurance?

Hi,

any recommendations on track day insurers? These threads are quite old now and the last company I used no longer offers track day cover.
Cheers

Hi CJR,

I have tried to message you a couple of times but it does not seem to work. I am interested in buying the radiator, do you want to drop me an email with a price and collection location?

Hi all,

I have a 93 FD with  an apexi, sports cat, 3inch system, sports air filters, std map.battery still in front.

I am just about to pull the rad out to fit a replacement fan after the river side fan burn out after my last track day.

Given the rad is 24 years old it seemed sensible to replace it before it fails and it will help with future track days I think. I know Koyo are popular but would prefer to buy British - are these any good - http://radtec.co.uk/products/283/RX7-Radiator.htm  ?

Replacing the rad reminded of v mounts which, when combined with a tax rebate, woke the sleeping 'MustMod' monster.. so.. is a v mount necessary if running remapped twins?
If I mod then I will need a new downpipe with the remap, any recommendations?
Will this increase exhaust noise?? I run 97db @5000 rpm so I am close to track day limits and on track is where i want to stay.

Then there is the part of me that has left the car largely standard that questions whether the remap is worth the inevitable engine ware - is a 10% power gain that noticeable anyway..? I know I cant drive the car to its limits, so making it faster will only increase my error margin.. (SHUT UP! says MustMod) ..

Advice, thoughts and meanderings most welcome  :)

Rotary and General Chit-Chat / Re: What to do with my FD?
February 04, 2017, 03:28:01 PM
I have had my FD for 10 years. For 4 years it was SORN on a driveway uncovered in Essex. It was started once every 6 months allowed to warm and then switched off. I did not see any significant change in the car.

More recently the seal in front of driver side rear wheel needed welding (good job done near Maidenhead) - it looked as though two drainage points had clogged and  water had sat there for years. Related or unrelated I will never know.

So my view is hold on to it and I wish your mum the best of luck

3rd generation RX-7's / FD - Seat belt - known defect?
January 25, 2016, 04:16:42 PM
Hi,

my drivers seat belt is not locking out when it should i.e. it is faulty . I seem to recall someone once telling me that there was a known manufacturing fault and that Mazda is obliged to fix FoC, can anyone confirm this? If this was true I thought there would be a sticky on it, but I cannot find one so perhaps not true?

And if so, can anyone recommend a Mazda dealership in Berkshire that can do the work?

Thanks
