Got a phonecall at work on Saturday to say that someone had rather helpfully decided to do an impromptu redesign of my FD. Managed to plough into it whilst parked up, then run away from the scene. Almost certainly drunk, and (of course) has no insurance. Brilliant.

The upshot is that the car\'s now been recovered by my insurance company (Elephant) to a local \'approved\' garage. And as \'approved\' normally means \'cheap, and **** poor for anything other than a Ford/Vauxhall\', I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for good FD-friendly bodyshops in the South London area. The car is currently in Sutton apparently. Not sure if it\'s driveable, but can always arrange to get it lifted a short distance.

cheers, I\'ll give it a go tomorrow when it\'s light (and my engine bay\'s cooled down a bit)

General Technical / Stuck pop-ups
September 22, 2006, 07:52:58 PM
Picked my car up today after a rebuild by RX Motors (who seem to have done a quality job, incidentally), so first time I\'ve driven it in a couple of months.

*flashed* someone to let them out at a junction, and my right pop-up has frozen open. The left one moves up and down as normal, both with headlight switch and the pointless \'open your pop-ups without turning your lights on\' switch. But the right one is just stuck open.

What\'s likely to have caused it? And is there any manual way I can drop it back down for now?

If you were driving, you have to declare. Most insurance companies will barely increase premiums for one endorsement or claim though. It\'s when you hit 2 or more that they start skyrocketing.

Strictly speaking, they\'re not twin turbos, they\'re sequential... but as stock, they come with two turbos.

Many people replace these with a bigger single turbo, usually for big bhp increases.

1.3L is the true capacity of the RX7 engine. Because it\'s a rotary, it doesn\'t really compare with a 1.3litre conventional engine.

As for buying, if you\'re looking to import directly, //www.neweraimports.com is always a good bet. However at the moment I\'d recommend buying privately personally. There are a lot of very good condition RX7s for sale by people from this club, which is usually a good indicator that the car will have been carefully looked after. I\'m thinking of selling mine, for instance :) Going this route will usually save you quite a bit of money compared to importing.

Insurance can be a killer, however there\'s currently a nice loophole in the Admiral group\'s quote engine which should massively reduce your premium compared to elsewhere. Plus the fact that you live in Wales (mostly very low risk postcodes, insurance wise) means insurance shouldn\'t be *too* bad...

pm me if you want any more details.

Stu have a word with Brian Ellis of Rotary Imports about mapping - he really knows his stuff and the rate he quoted me was very competitive.

Nice... what did they actually do for you? Just polish, or polish and repair?

I need my wheels refurbing (mild scuffing/laquer peel around the edge of the rims), and thinking of getting them refinished (possibly in black) at the same time.

General Technical / FD Rattles! Annoying
March 20, 2006, 05:42:26 PM
Yep mine rattles/squeaks, thought at first it was coming from my rear left suspension so will be very happy if it turns out to be something far more mundane. I\'ll try the rear hatch lock.

General Technical / Boost Leak?
February 27, 2006, 01:27:27 AM
Not got the upgraded Y-Pipe, so I guess it\'s probably that.

My skills under the bonnet are *extremely* limited though - any chance of some clues/a photo as to what I\'m looking for?

General Technical / Boost Leak?
February 26, 2006, 04:25:30 PM
What are the obvious causes for a boost leak? My first turbo doesn\'t seem to do anything other than whistle all of a sudden. I used to have the problem when one of my intercooler hoses split, but I\'ve got hardpipes now and have just checked them, they\'re still on there securely.

General Technical / Silicone Joins for Stock I/C pipes
February 21, 2006, 02:42:13 AM
Quick question: I\'ve got an RE:A hard pipe kit for the stock intercooler. The pipes have a habit of blowing off, which I think is down to the silicone joins having decayed. Does anyone know the dimensions needed for the silicone joins? As far as I can tell the intercooler ends need to be reducers (ie the intercooler socket is narrower than the hard pipe end), and the plenum/elbow ends need to be straight?

Was It You I Spotted? / Bright Green FD, A3
February 15, 2006, 06:45:43 PM
Pretty sure this will be Charlie\'s, parked up just off Shannon\'s Corner on the A3 - has to win prizes for the least subtle colour on an FD ever :D

Wheels & Tyres, Suspension & Brakes / Fitting an FD?
February 15, 2006, 06:38:55 PM
Pretty sure these will fit, but just to double check (I think they\'re slightly wider than my current wheels):

Fronts - 17 x 8.5
Rears - 17 x 9.5

Offset 40mm

PCD 114.3

Should be fine on an FD shouldn\'t they? Am I going to need spacers?

General Technical / Cheep Tunning Goodies
February 14, 2006, 11:42:07 PM
The only problem is, the tuners don\'t like it at all. You\'ve still got to go somewhere and get it mapped, and they really get the hump if you take your own PFC. Personally I can\'t see the problem, given you\'re still paying them for the mapping which runs into hundreds of pounds.
