i did think about this when i had the engine out of my mazda 3...sizewise it was almost the same but the exhaust issue you mentioned plus how to get the big flywheel in a smaller bellhousing led me to drop the idea....although for a man of your talent???

i used a piece of 2 by 2 angle iron with 2 holes in that fit over the dowels...rest it on the floor and go for it.

why??? thats the question i have now...
today i put another sensor on...no joy...rechecked all the wiring...no joy,not starting at all today. i thought i was going to have to change the ecu.
then i had a think back to the begining...when did all this kick off???...when i changed the starter motor...so i refitted the origional starter and it fired up first turn of the key with no fault code and ive run it and stopped it and restarted it many times and its behaving itself at the moment...lets hope it still behaves tomorrow.
but the question still remains for me,why would a starter cause the ess fault code and non start...its cranking ok!!! :dontknow:
