Doesn't the same apply to an RX-7? :p

Mind you, 50% more rotors, more complicated electronics and added rarity, I can see why running costs would be even higher...

Thanks for the advice. It has been a concern.

I\'ve read the JDM seat rails can be modified to slide back further and that some people of my height and over find a smaller steering wheel is all it takes to get comfortable.

Either way, I\'m not too worried, I work as an automotive engineer and have access to a fabrication shop and laser cutters, so just about any mod should be possible.

I can\'t stand most BMW drivers, I prefer to let people know where I\'m going before I turn the steering wheel! :Giggle

I\'m very picky when it comes to cars and have set my eye on a 1999 or 2000 Type RS in blue pretty much exactly like this: http://www.fdrx7.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=10863&stc=1&d=1371384207, I\'m yet to see one for sale in the UK.

Aside from the standard raft of reliability mods I\'m not intending to do too much to it. As I\'m 6\'3" I intend to fit a smaller diameter steering wheel (probably a Personal Grinta 330mm), I\'d like the RZ seats in red, but they seem very hard to find and quite pricey with rails. I\'ve also considered Feed side skirts and a RE-Amemiya rear diffuser, that\'s about it really. Oh and 18" TE37 wheels in gunmetal if I get bored of the stock ones, hehe.

Hi everyone, I\'m Alex. I\'m from Daventry. I\'m a lifelong car geek and work as an Automotive Design Engineer. I\'ve been a BMW guy most of my life but have recently become a bit of an RX-7 convert. I\'m seriously considering importing a late Series 8 from Japan after experiencing a friends RX-7. With that in mind I\'ve been busying myself learning as much as I can about them and what they\'re like to own and live with and what you can do with them. The forum here looks like a great place to learn more and get involved in the community on my way to becoming an RX-7 owner.

My current car is a \'96 BMW 323i Coupe which I\'ve now had for 11 years, it\'s turned into my daily driver now but I do still love it and don\'t see myself ever selling it. Even so a change is in order and these days I can afford to run a weekend car for fun.

I play icehockey with a recreational team in Coventry and am quite a bit into fitness and weightlifting. As a true engineer at heart I\'ve always got project ideas and love learning and tinkering with things from electronics and programming to machining and design. I\'ve been lucky enough that I\'ve managed to make engineering my day job.

General Queries / Hints and Tips on purchasing a rotary / Cost of a Decent FD As of 2014

I\'ve been looking to import an FD myself, hence why I registered for the forum. I\'ve been doing a lot of research to understand the costs. Japanese used cars are cheap, but you need to pay import duty and VAT as well as agent and shipping fees, de-registration in Japan and re-registration with the DVLA in the UK, fitting of an alarm system, converting the speedo and foglight fitment.

All in all the ballpark figure I\'m budgeting against is Â£12000 for a stock 1999 RX7 Type RS with low miles. I\'m sure you can get a slightly older one for less, but the fees stay about the same.

I\'d be very concerned about importing an FD for less than Â£5k, if it can be done at all!

Again, I say this as a non-owner (yet).

Based on what I found I gave myself a budget of 1.3 Million Yen, about Â£7500 with the current exchange rate. I believe the cost of getting that car to the UK breaks down like this:

Car base cost: Â£7500
Auction transport: Â£50
Shipping by container: Â£750
Duty (10% on everything so far): Â£830
VAT (20% on top of that): Â£1660
Customs Agent Fee: Â£75
Speedo conversion: Â£150
UK Foglight fitment: Â£60
DVLA Registration: Â£55
License Plates: Â£25
MOT: Â£35

Total cost: Â£11190

That does not include alarm fitment or undersealing the car.

Going through a known importer such as JM-Imports is slightly more expensive but does give some peace of mind and is what I\'ll be doing.
