General Technical / MOT fail
April 08, 2014, 03:52:57 PM
Hello,
Well its my first MOT as an RX7 owner and I was dreading it.
Good bit, the car itself is great flew through, no advisories.
Bad bit, what it has failed on is the emission\'s.
I know from the posts I have  looked at its a bit of a black art. But I am not sure where to go with it.
After arguing with the tester I managed to get them to test it on a old fashioned non cat test. The limit for CO is 3.5 and mine was reading 5.
Tester told me to check the Lambda sensor as it seemed to him to be over fuelling(smelt). When I got home I found that the sensor was disconnected. Also I noticed that one of the air pump wires were broken. And finally the large pipe on the bottom of the intercooler had come off. This answered one question as it was down on power on the way to the garage.
Sorry for the ramble, but does anyone more experienced think the emissions failure could be down to one or more of the issues mentioned??

The car is on a standard ecu. The only mods are a high flow cat and 3" cat back exhaust. Also I have fitted  Apexi twin cone air filters. Other than that it standard as far as I know.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated as always

General Technical / FD seat belt bolt size
April 03, 2014, 08:17:22 PM
HI,
Does anyone know what size thread the bolt is that secures the front seat belts to the floor underneath the front seats?
It looks like an M11 but I am unsure of the pitch. It looked like a 1mm pitch, but I purchased 1mm and 1.25mm pitch taps to be safe and it still doesn\'t look right when compared to the bolt.
I need to clean the thread up in the floor as its full of debris.

General Technical / No charge light??
December 31, 2013, 07:37:49 PM
Hi Guys,
I have an issue that I am struggling to resolve on my 93 FD.
When you turn the key to the first position where all the dash lights come on I don\'t get the charge/battery light come on.
All the other lights work as they should but I get nothing from the charge light at any time.
I did have issues with various warning lights not working, but with the help of all you  boys and girls I have resolved all but this one.
I changed the battery recently, but it is now flat again. I have had the car running and with a meter I was getting 14 ish volts if I remember correctly.
I just cant figure out why I have not got a charge light showing before start up. Also I have never had it come on while driving.
Can anyone help, I\'m a bit stumped.

I would go for a front and rear seal as well for a FD

Cheers

General Technical / Can anyone identify these
October 13, 2013, 10:47:20 AM
So after poking around it seems that the sensor in the hose is a greddy unit. I ve chased the wires and it seems that it must of had a greddy gauge set in the car before and someone has cut the wires under the dash and removed the gauge.

As its already all fitted and cables run, does anyone know if I can use the greddy sensor with a generic gauge? I purchased a temperature gauge of the internet(brand unknown), so it would be a result if I can just connect it straight to the cut cable under the dash.

General Technical / Can anyone identify these
October 12, 2013, 01:29:12 PM
Hello,

While doing my shopping list of things I need to do a boost gauge and water temperature gauge. I came across the following when I removed the air box.

It looks like a temperature probe has already been inserted into the top radiator hose. Is this the OEM probe for the stock gauge??

The only reason I ask is that is looks exactly like the aftermarket one I was looking at( the blue unit) and it is wired in to a OEM looking plug.

Hopefully this link will work to the picture!!

General Technical / Refitting the air pump
September 20, 2013, 07:48:54 PM
Sooo, I\'ve took advantage of the break in the rain to continue playing.

I\'ve been looking at the air pump further and to be honest I don\'t know if its working or not after I reconnected it.

The grey plug on top was connected, the wires at the plug do look a bit bare and heat ravaged, but I am getting 12v at the plug. I\'ve checked the fuses and I\'ve swapped the relays around to see if I can see a difference when the engines running.

What happens when the pump kicks in or out, can you see or hear this happening?

As far as I can tell all the previous owner did was stick a bolt in the hose in to cat to block it off. Could this of damaged the unit.

As always any help appreciated

General Technical / Refitting the air pump
September 17, 2013, 07:43:05 PM
Hello,
Slightly different question to the usual questions.
When I purchased my 93\'FD it had a stonking big stainless steel exhaust on it. It was basically a big back box with a tube right through to the down pipe.

Now I couldn\'t live with the noise and the smell of fuel, so I have replace it with a Magnaflow hi flow cat and a quieter back box.

The cat was advertised as replacing the stock unit, so I thought great, easy fix.

When I was fitting the new system yesterday I found the air pump line pushed up out of the way. So I pulled down and found that the hose had been plugged with a bolt.

So I have 2 questions

1. I have rigged up the air pump hose to the cat. The factory connection has a small hole in the end, which I assume, restricts the flow into cat. I have just rigged up the full bore rubber pipe onto the cat as it just had a 10mm dia pipe coming out the side of the cat and not the factory fitting.
Will this extra flow of air into the cat cause an issue??

2. Considering the hose from the air pump was just blocked off with a bolt, would the person that disconnected it have done anything else to stop the pump working. I cant see any plugs disconnected.
After putting everything back together I realised that I had not made sure there was air coming out of the pump and in to the cat.

Sorry for long winded post, but would really appreciate any advice.

I. C. E. & Electrical / Electrical nightmares
June 09, 2013, 08:52:41 PM
Thanks guys,

I have been through the fuses in the cabin and in the engine bay and all were ok.

I havent started pulling relays as yet as the systems they seem to identify work I think. I did notice that I havent got one in the position marked \'Retra\'. I thought this was for the pop up lights, but these work fine without it??

I checked exactly what works and what doesnt today.

All external lights work, interior lights work, gauge illumination works now I have changed dimmer switch, electric windows work, central locking works.

Dash warning lights dont work, climate control unit does not work(interestingly hazzard warning light switch does work just the rest of the unit is dead)

Good tip about the bulb and 2 wires, Ive also seen somthing about dry joints on the fuse box. Is this common do you know?

I. C. E. & Electrical / Electrical nightmares
June 08, 2013, 12:43:06 PM
Hello all,

I wonder if any one can shed some light. None of my electrics in the cabin seem to work.

When I put the the key in and turn it to position 2 (ready to start) I dont get any lights come up on the dash at all. I would of expected somting to come up (Battery light ect, abs light ect)

Ive searched through the posts and followed the obvious pointers. These being replacing the dimmer switch. This now seems to work, the gauge illumination goes up and down.

Ive seem people mention the TNS relay, but I have side lights and reverse lights so I assume this is ok.

Does anyone have any advise, Im starting to think im in over my head with the Rex!

General Technical / Little bit worried.
May 27, 2013, 11:44:54 AM
Hi,
I been the proud owner of a FD for a couple of months now. I maust admit I ve yet to drive in anger to much, apart for a blast down the lanes by me to keep everything moving once or twice a week.

I have no evedence of a rebuild, but I did have a specalist do a compression check on it before purchase and he said it was a strong engine (high 7\'s).

Now, Ive just noticed somthing odd. When I take the cap off of the water tank(centre one), the water is there to start with but if you keep watching it after 30 seconds or so it drains away back into the engine.

Ive checked this a couple of times, just in case im seeing things.

I dont think the level in the expansion tank is moving, it isnt moving a lot if it is?

Should I be worried??

Any help would be appriciated

General Technical / Proud new owner.
April 28, 2013, 01:17:25 PM
Hello all,

I have just taken delivery of a 93 FD3S RX7.

I am new to the world of rotarys, and even petrol cars to be honest, so was wondering if I may ask a few questions.

I did a bit of research before purchasing and had some one do  a compression test for me. Came back with readings of mid 7\'s which the guy said was ok.

The car is stock as far as I can tell except for a dirty great stainless steel decat exhaust that sounds like thunder!

The car goes like a train and pulls up to the red line with ease. However after the 100 mile drive home I got in to stop start traffic near my home and it wouldnt idle correctly and kept stalling. It would restart no problem, but would stall again.

Is this to do with the exhaust system? There is also a strong smell of petrol when stationary. Would this also be to do with the exhaust?
Does the car just need a bit of a tune to allow for the exhaust?

The only other issue I have is the oil pressure gauge not working correctly, I am on to this through and have ordered a new sender unit, but have one question. Do I need to drain the oil to change it or can I just pop the new one in?

And finally, does anyone know anyone in the west midlands that has the experience to look after these cars?

Many thanks for your help
