General Technical / Is it Stainless or Mild steel?
February 03, 2013, 03:11:56 PM
Quote from: johnf;849628Isn\'t mild steel magnetic and stainless isn\'t?

Stand to be corrected.

Not strictly true, it depends on the material properties beyond whether it is mild or stainless.

A stainless is likely to be far less magnetic than a mild steel though as it has less ferrous content.

Utterly awful and hateful.

Quote from: Will66;848632For a road car, I\'d go for a large capacity single intercooler for simplicity and effectiveness, twin intercoolers are going to mean lots of intake piping which can lead to more turbo lag and if your coolers are separated with the radiator in the middle, you may get heatsoak in the adjoining pipework so they\'re less effective than a single cooler of the same volume.

More critical is managing pressure loss across the whole system.

OEM systems are quite convoluted in some instances due to packaging restrictions yet the pressure loss pre and post charge cooler can be quite small. It\'s the core that tends to eat it up where the air has to decelerate and expand into the volume.

It\'s all very well throwing more water at it to avoid the heat soak problem but 1 litre of water weighs 1kg. With a solid charge cooler system that will take sustained abuse around a race track you are better off going with an air-to-air system for weight purposes.

For drag racing there is no contest - the charge cooler wins every time.

tbh, I\'d be looking for as close to standard models as possible. Unless you\'re spending serious money (north of 10k, and even then there are no guarantees) you\'re probably going to find something that has had corners cut. It\'s not a criticism of all owners, but due to the nature of these things and the running costs - you gotta pay to play and a lot of people can\'t really afford to play properly especially at the moment!

At least with a standard car you know that everything will be done to a standard you are happy with and frankly, that is peace of mind you cannot buy no matter how much you spend in the first place.

Quote from: samoht;844892I\'m gutted you had to break your car, it looked awesome.

However, for balance I have to say that I bought a near-standard car for a little above OP\'s budget, and (touch wood) it\'s been fine for the short time I\'ve had it.  So there are good cars out there, it\'s just a matter of finding one.

It was a poorly put together shed which needed horrendous amounts of money throwing at it to get it to anything like the level I would be happy with.

If (I were insane enough) to buy another one, I would buy a stocker. No offence to anyone directly, but I don\'t trust pre-modified cars at all any more. Regardless of what companies have been used along the way.

Make sure you have a :censored::censored::censored::censored: load of money sat waiting for when it goes wrong is my advice.

In the 6 months I owned mine, it cost me nearly what I bought the thing for on top to actually make it work.

I gave up in the end, decided it wasn\'t worth the hassle.

Of course, for every one of me, there will be 5 who tell you they are the greatest machines ever and are reliable as anything lol

I have super streets off my breaker. Good and comfy but don\'t go especially low if that\'s what you\'re after.

Wouldn\'t touch an Evo with a barge pole for a regular use machine personally. Service intervals and repair costs are eye watering if anything should go wrong.

At least with the Monaro you\'ve got the most unstressed and long running engine design in the world and it\'s essentially a sled. Not exactly a nice place to be though.

Actually I\'d consider an E39 M5 as well in the same breath as a Monaro. Better car all round but as with any M car, repair costs and servicing aren\'t going to be great.

RX-8 News and Information / Engine blown, What to do?
December 16, 2012, 03:42:06 PM
Well I\'m fobbing mine off for 2k with all ancillaries the only thing it\'s missing is the secondary fuel rail and anything after the exhaust ports. But hey, I probably shouldn\'t be hawking my crap here lol

I think a complete rebuild will run you more than 2.5k in all honesty. I paid out nearly 3k for mine to be rebuilt and that was at a reduced price!

General Technical / Boost controller of choice

AVCRs are good but imo, overly complex unless you\'re after a very specific setup. Most aren\'t.

Have no experience with HKS or Blitz controllers.

Greddy is good. Nice and simple and does what it\'s supposed to.

I hear useful things about Gizmo controllers which are cheap but again, no experience with those.

Quote from: Grizzly;838340You haven\'t had many fast cars have you :)

... has nothing to do with anything?

What a thoroughly pointless comment.

The fact of the matter is, people don\'t have that much disposable at the minute. The vast majority of the ones that do are not buying 20 year old highly modified sports cars.

Remember, the entire world does not revolve around one car. Certainly not an RX-7.

Quote from: cyman;838273the car is extreme which is what most people wanting an rx7 are looking for

The last 4 people I talked to who have considered buying one are after standard examples and are put off by the fact that there are a very limited number of standard cars about.

You\'re going to struggle to get anywhere near what you would like it to be worth. When it comes down to it, its a highly inefficient cramped sports car with small market appeal and costs a horrendous amount to run...

3rd generation RX-7's / Take rx7 to track day?

Quote from: brodierx7;837714What\'s the chances of sum nutter running into you?

Slim. The standard of driving on full bore trackdays is vastly superior to that of the :censored::censored::censored::censored: you see at events like Japfest et al.

Anyone who is driving like a clown will be thrown off the track very quickly.
