Eyup Chaps!

i have  a query! id not  normaly trouble you with RX-8 issues and keep them to the rx8 oc .... however im not dumb to the fact that you guys over here are significantly more technicaly gifted and have a experiece with modding rotarys older than i am :Thumbs-up

so here goes ... im no stranger to rebuilding 13b\'s ive 2 on the go at the min and have done a couple of others - a week ago however i built my own, the plan all along was to try out a little porting and see if i could manage it :D! things became a little more ugent however when my rear stationary gear slipped 2 weeks ago tomorrow :(

fortunatly the rotors were ready and the engine was just waiting to be assembled finaly last sunday after fixing a petrol leak (nicked a seal :Hammer) i fired he up and have spent the last 6 days running her in at 4k and below ... today i hit the 500 mile mark and had planned an oil change at this interval - unable to wait i nipped out and began creeping her up gentally to 5k rpm (planning in staying at this for the next 500 miles before 6k etc etc)

so ive hit a slight hiccup - litteraly!

after 4k she spluttered a little under load - more aparent up hill less down, a few gental trips up to the 4.5k mark to try to pinpoint the problem (different throttlw positions, incline, decline etc) it went away ... or got better and better would be a better way of putting it - and now the same problem between 4.5k and 5k no worse but doesnt seem to be softerning up now!

ill try describe it as best i can .... its like hitting the limiter ... but it letting you through - so not quite cutting fuel completly but a little bit! a bit of a splutter - like you\'ve come off the throttle toutch for a moment then puting iback on - enough for a pop pop pop but not a bang (ive gto a reacing header, decat and catback on)

now - i have a whole number of possible reasons in my head! so ill talk you through the physical aspects of what it might be first - the header is new! tho there are others 8s with the same 1 on so i think it unlikly that this is the problem! the exhasut has a slight blow between the header and decat (perhaps causing dogy lambda readings?) ive used the racing beet light street mod porting templates and opened the ports at a 45 degree angle to save any risk of hitting or nearly hitting the water jackets - i wondered if they had opened up too much but figured if this was the problem it would be more aparent lower rpm

k+n highflow filter panel - no problems before

also im running the stock Map - i realise this might sound a little daft - which kinda brings me onto my next point - directed at carl hayward (hopefully he\'ll reed this :god) but if anyone can shed any light on things it would be well appreciated - i know haywards offer porting on the renisis - my question is carl - do you guys use a set of templates - bought from a company like racing beat or do you it by eye/ have your own templates? if so how modest are your ports compared to the rb ones? also do you map the cars that you port or is the ECU capable of accomodating the bigger ports (i know they are very active in the 8 - and wondered if this is why it kinda \'fixed itself\' between 4 and 4.5 k

Do you reccon the she just needs running in a little more? i realise it takes time

im not experiencing any other problems and the car is running sweeter and sweeter with every 100 miles - ive not compression tested it just yet but will do with the oil change perhaps tomorrow! but having 0 starting problems so im not too worried (not until tonight anyway :o

anyway a couple of pics might help you visualise the ports

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh this explain soooooo much! i was always sure it was bar

but just so you know im not a complete idiot - im absolutly certain that results often come in kgf/cm2, PSI or kPa (= to bar as you say)

im not sure with the rx7 (i know the fds minimum is 85 psi) how it is measured in the hand book but the RX-8s results at 250rpm (standard for rotarys) need to be between 6.9 and 8.5 and im 1000000% certain thats kgf/cm2 and not bar - i needed to know because i get results in psi with my tester :cool - check the workshop manual if you dont believe me :p:Thumbs-up

as well as acurate figures for the 6 rotor faces!

mazda rotary comp testers give results in kg/cm2 as well not bar - tho theres not much difference :wiggle

RX-8's / Turbo RX-8

your not kidding - it looks like a bit of a faff and designed by an idiot!

looking at this

ontop ofg all the other stupid mistakes youve already listed the down pipe pass\'s right past the intake - now correct me if im wrong but carnt rotary exhaust gases reach temps as high as 2000*f WOT? carnt be too good for getting that cold air in the through the ports when your runners are glowing red hot :rollin

is IC short for intercooler? - if it is you can just see it through the bottom vent - basically infront of the radiator! :wiggle

Quote from: Grant Monkhouse;786647You missed the biggest restriction of air flow into that engine bay though mitch, the huge number plate covering the passage into the bay:yes

wheres the biggest laff out loud smiley? :rollin<<< this will have to do

oh and the mouth of the 8 is closed off stock on purpose! the number plate makes no difference! why? the cold air flowing through the bay was causing problems with how the oil cooled in the rotary ... something they realised when testing the 8 and have obviously conveniantly forgotten to tell you guys :evillaugh food for thought :2Rolleyes

also the radiator is mounted on an angle rather than upright in the 8! and its \'scoop\' is the bottom vent below the plate between the oil coolers!

i can tell you this 2! 300 bhp is pretty pethetic on a turbod 8 - theres a chap on the oc just sold his running 450 bhp with the boost turned up to around 1.2 or 1.4 bar (i think) on stock ports!!!

any supercharger will give you between 320 and 360 bhp with stock ports - modding the 8\'s is only just beginning on large scale really - combined with all the moddern tech, chassis, suspension set up etc etc i think some of you older hardcore rotary chappies are gonna have to admit to moving over on the track when and is scraping paint off your bumpers :p

in the meen time tho im still looking for a FD to rebuild so if anyone heres owt ...:Laugh
