General Technical / Bringing an FD out of stasis.
February 04, 2014, 02:04:42 AM
Hi all,

Its been a long time since I\'ve graced this site, and unfortunately an equally long time since I\'ve been able to run or do any work on my \'92 FD. I\'ll explain myself a little beforehand as to why I\'ve ended up in this situation.

*Feel free to skip the next paragraph if you just want to know what I\'m here for*

When I first got hold of the RX I used to have a large garage which I rented from a friend, this garage had what felt like an infinite amount of space in which to work so I could happily break her down into her component parts if needs be. Unfortunately a few years ago, due to financial problems, my friend had to move elsewhere so I lost my garage. After a while of taking up space on peoples drives I managed to get hold of a lock up. When I say lock up I genuinely mean lock up too, I almost have to get out of the car outside then push it inside! Making any work at all impossible to carry out. This worked OK...until inevitably problems started cropping up. I can go into it a bit more, if I haven\'t already raised a thread with the symptoms, but basically she\'s been running very rough. Flooding pretty much every time the engine is turned off and subsequent backfiring when/if I eventually get her started. I think, from what I\'ve read before, it\'s time for the Apexi Power FC. It\'s also been mentioned by, all be it V8, drivers that it could be sticking injectors.. Anyway.. I couldn\'t afford to send her away to get fixed as I have been saving for my own place, which *fingers crossed* I should be moving into in a couple of months. This has a nice big garage again so I can finally start working!

Due to this, my RX7 has been sat in said lock up for over a year (maybe more). I\'ve kept the tyres as fresh as I can, inflated and rolling and disconnected the battery. My only worry is she\'s had 1/4 tank of fuel sat there all this time. People have told me it should be fine to top up as long as I throw some Reddex or similar in there too. Obviously I know how fickle these cars can be so I thought I\'d seek some help from the best source of information out there, you guys!

Any help at all would be fantastic and I\'m looking forward to getting back in the swing of things! It\'s been a long time and I have forgotten a lot of rotary knowledge! Ask as many questions as you need to and I\'ll give you all the information I can!

Cheers,

 Matt

Hello all, after a lengthy winter break I\'ll be cracking the RX back out.. though shes had a few problems. She\'ll be on her way to Silverstone autos for a service and MOT and a look at said issues but thought I\'d put a post on here first so I had an idea what I may be looking at.. I think I mentioned it in a previous post but my RX is constantly flooding and running rich, and the second stage turbo seems to make its own mind up if its going to boost or not. Could all these problems be down to my knightsports ecu not functioning and be fixed with a fresh Apexi power fc? or are my problems so vague that it could be anything? lol

Yeah, got the defi gauges. Cheers for the tips, I\'ll go have a look as soon as I\'ve got some spare time. I\'ll add the conversion to my price list of possibilities.

Thanks all!!! :) fully enjoyed scott baio pitchiing in! Woops about the 1.3 too! meant .3! Shes a \'92 FD type R with twin apexi air intakes, borla 4" straight through exhaust, hks intercooler and as I mentioned before a busted knightsports ecu with boost control. 3 upgrade rule maybe? If it were another car I\'d say it sounds like the choke is constantly staying out aswell.. is that possible in an FD? I\'ll list a few of my ailments:

-- on (eventual) starting (after a good few turnovers and only catching it on the throttle) I have to keep my revs up manually until shes warmed up. Letting my foot off the throttle results in a stall until then. During this warm up there tends to be a puff or pop of fuel and exhaust smoke but this only lasts for about a minute.

-- After squeezing her out of the garage she runs and idles fine until you put your foot anywhere near down. Then, she sounds like a corsa with a £20 exhaust and feels really laboured like theres no turbos at all. If I do get full boost in 1st/2nd gear as soon as I switch up and keep going she\'ll not boost again.. letting off the throttle then results in a "BOOOOOOO" sound. Its weird though, I\'m sure it depends on the day \'cause sometimes she\'ll boost fine

---Then after a calm, cooling drive back and even a bit of cooldown time back at the garage or wherever I\'ve stopped I\'ll switch her off. If it happens to be say.. on a car park at asda and I\'ve finished my beer shopping Ill come to start her, landing me straight back on my first dilema.

Thats all the main problems I can think of at the moment apart from little things that I can or am currently dealing with. Mainly bodywork and interior. Can anyone help me on what this might be? Taking into account work I\'ve done/had done including: rebuild and fresh standard turbos just over a year ago, new clutch master cylinder, new (top of my head) is it oil management?? that was what caused my peril most recently. but yeah..

In light of all your tails I do seem to be groaning about absolutly nothing! I think I do feel a bit like this cause I\'ve not experienced a good cane around an open road in a long time, I\'m sure if I stick it out I\'ll get that smile back on my face! and this forums been amazing keeping me in faith and helping me out! You\'ve not been wrong yet :D
 Cheers all!

Hi all,
Has anybody else felt like they were painting the forth bridge with their rex? Get one problem fixed just for another gremlin to pop up and ruin your day? Had my starting problem and clutch fixed by the fabulous people at silverstone autos and now a couple of months down the line what seems like a whole host of disasterous problems have turned up. A fresh problem means it won\'t ever start without a fight, and then doesnt boost over 1.3bar. Overfueling, flooding, random idles. Does this sound like an apexi ecu and tune could well solve the problem? My knightsports one seems to not work at all anymore too....
I need some reassurance and enthusiasm injecting into me if anyone can help!!!! I love my rex to bits but if this next stint in the garage doesnt solve it by 60% ( I can deal with personality in a car and little problems) I\'m afraid I may have to sell as I can\'t stand having her sat in my garage twiddling her thumbs. :( How much does it take so I can use it as an (almost) daily driver?! Id do anything just to know I could just go over to the garage, sit in the rex and for her to start without a complaint!!!

Don\'t think it helps I got turfed out of my double garage for a bloody council lock up I can barely open A door in either. Checking levels is a task in itself in that dive!!

HEEEELLLPP EVERYBODY!!!!

The suns got his hat on again! So does anyone fancy a meet at either guys court or the Sandbrook in Wigan again? Or elsewhere? I\'ve been out of the loop for some time, but now I\'m back thanks to silverstone autos again! :Giggle

General Technical / Flooding!
March 03, 2010, 05:41:01 PM
My FD seems to be flooded near enough every time I go to take it out for a spin. I don\'t drive short distances and I leave it running on the turbo timer once I\'m back (with the exhaust pointing out of the garage and door open). Any tips to stop this constant pain in the **** or what other causes are there? To be honest I think I need a new ecu or at least a new map so may be taking a trip down to the chaps at silverstone auto..problem solved?

It was a coupe, I think it could be the same one I\'ve followed to work a few times. Prestine!

General Technical / Easy start
February 16, 2010, 11:31:52 AM
I was given some as a quick "fix", just in case it didn\'t start, in order to get it going so I could take it to Silverstone auto at somepoint for a full lookover and fix. Starting problems have been down to a few numerous things I think, now you mention it though the most recent one would be down to the short journeys. It hates starting/fails to start when its even mildly cold,l do you have any idea what could of lead to this?

Was It You I Spotted? / White 2nd gen embeddded in snow

About a month ago, whilst turning back from work due to that heavy snow, I saw a 2nd gen pulled up sill deep in snow at the side of the dual carriageway at bamber bridge. Was that anyones bad start to the day?

General Technical / Easy start
February 15, 2010, 08:41:30 AM
Short and simple.. if I where to use "easy start" on the rex (FD) where would I spray it and is it advisable? I\'m guessing its pretty useless spraying into the air intake and I\'m not too sure of spraying directly into the side of the engine without a bit of advise.
