1st generation RX-7's / Homologation
September 17, 2013, 08:07:29 AM
Hi Brian,
Yes, it was homologated in group B, FIA paper 255 on 01/02/1984, but nothing in any other groups.
I\'ve got an old list if you want it. The full list used to be in the public domain on the FIA website, but it seems to have disappeared.

Hey CLive, not sure if i could do a project from scratch, don\'t have nearly enough patience for that so i would like something that is already done. I guess a lot of the ones that turn up for sale are imports too are they?

Old school Mazda's / Rx3
January 24, 2013, 08:46:39 AM
Hi jetpilot my RX-4 is still for sale .... http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75261

My dad has got an RX-3 rolling shell that he\'d sell, but it will require a fair bit of welding, let me know if your interested.

There\'s not really any custom bits for old school mazdas in this country, either get them from Oz, Nz or States or fabricate. RX-4\'s have got more room under the bonnet, RX-3\'s really are tiny... well for my frame they are :Laugh

As Grant says, the old school engines were front mount, so old school 13b\'s drop into RX-3\'s very easily, just slight slotting, spacers or custom front mount.
Mark 1 RX-7\'s are useful donor vehicles and later engines can have old school front covers put on, http://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/front-cover-swap-797259/ plus loads more discussion in that forum.

Brakes don\'t have to be that big, old school mazdas are a lot lighter than the modern bloat. In race trim my RX-4 is 960 kg and my dad\'s RX-3 is 890kg (could be a bit lighter, but that was the minimum weight for the championship  he raced in).

Suspension wise, RX-3\'s are a bit tricky, the wheelbase is so short so they\'re always going to be a bit twitchy, but generally follow ford escort type mods, so springs, dampers, decent bushes. At the back end, extra location is a must, so panhard rod and ideally 5 link it.

Hope that helps as a starter!

Cars for Sale / RX-4 race car for sale

Thanks Grant,

It\'s never been on a dyno, but the Dellorto does give brilliant mid-range. I\'d say 140 whp is about right. Racing beat don\'t have it listed any more, but there is some info on the Dellorto at http://www.gruntled.com/Dellorto/catalog.html . I relied heavily on this site when I originally set it up.

Quote from: kiwimazda;788293Have a look at the kia sportage final drive. Its about 4.7 from memory. I ran one in the 7 and if you can get one with the lsd then bonus. I paid £50 for mine from the breaker with the lsd. I think the Honda S2000 will fit also:cheers
Hi Brian,

These should be different, the one in yours was 26 spline, RX-4 13b is on 28 spline....not aware of any interchanges, I\'d be interested to know what source its from!

Old school Mazda's / 929 with 12a on ebay

Quote from: Ray;787222Some of the parts went to a guy Mike who used to be on this forum, he had the 929 engine for his Mazda pickup and also some other coupe bits because he had a 929 that he was going to restore. I\'ve not heard about him or the car for years, from memory I think he was from Grimsby and was into datsun\'s.
Found it - http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30035
He had some really good bumpers off me and maybe a back panel ;)

If the front is on 114 PCD wheels, then it will almost certainly be on RX7 struts, so it\'s pretty well as low as it can be at the front. The camber looks OK, so I guess that the cross-member may have been redrilled?

I\'d be surprised if the RX7 axle is a great deal wider than a 929, as the half shafts are a similar length, I\'ll check at the weekend.

Decambering or re-rolling the eyes on the leaves is the best way, but lowering blocks are OK and upto a couple of inches doesn\'t seem to cause a problem.

This is before any work was done on it: http://classicmazda.co.uk/restoration/929/929.html

This is how Simon (sorry, I\'ve not got any contact details - but I think he\'s a member on the darkside) had it http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y275/barfupalung/GetAttachment.jpg

Quote from: harmeetjohal;787022so when looking for engine and gearbox parts do i ask for 929, RX4 or someone mentioned RX7 parts?

The guy who did the rotary conversion used all RX7 running gear, I\'d imagine it\'s still the same, including the axle. He cut the RX7 bracketry off and welded platforms for the RX4 leaf springs. I\'m not sure what year RX7 he used as a donor, but you can work it out from the axle. I know he wanted rear discs, I can\'t remember him swapping the struts, but it does look lower than a standard 929, so maybe on RX7 struts, and it has also the oil cooler under the filter, so best guess would be series 3 RX7. What PCD are the wheels?

If you are interested in a 2nd gen, I\'ve got a race car in my garage that had been neglected and has been part restored, it\'s a project I\'ll never finish :(

Also, I\'d sell my RX-4 track car for the right money ;)

However, if you want to start from scratch first gen\'s are great. The steering is fine for racing, but may be a bit cumbersome for drifting. The required modifications are well known and there\'s still a good supply of donor parts. The hardest item to come by as already suggested would be the LSD, so from that point of view, a series 3 would be the easiest to source a diff for, personally I\'d look for a sportage diff, it depends if you want a clutch type or viscous type.

I\'ve got the the rx7 competition preparation and service manual at http://classicmazda.co.uk/comp.manual.pdf , which may give you some ideas.

PS I love your G4, it looks fantastic :InLove

Quote from: harmeetjohal;783857what trim bits are missing? and what is wrong with the rear plate?
I had this car when it still had the piston engine in, but it\'s had a lot of work done since I had it, however I remember the shell was pretty straight, with only minor welding required.

The main item missing is the rear trim, see http://classicmazda.co.uk/graphics/P1010181.JPG .They are easily damaged and are like hen\'s teeth to get in good condition. There are some other badges missing, there should be rx4 and 12re badges on the rear quarter, but I wouldn\'t worry about that as personally I think it suits the de-chromed style and it keeps people guessing :Giggle

The other differences are the fuel tank, the 929 is smaller and the tacho is red lined at 6500 on the rotary, but less on the 929 at 6000 maybe.

I\'ve got a few articles on my website, see http://classicmazda.co.uk/history.html some of the links are broken, as it\'s an old page.

It certainly looks pretty stunning and hopefully now the clutch is sorted should let you have some fun in it!
