Title: Panel filters VS Cone setups
Post by: Brett on October 12, 2004, 08:30:31 AM
So whats the best then?   I\'ve tried a Mazdaspeed and a K&N panel in my Egi, now its running with a K&N cone which does feel a little better than the panel filters.

But, whats best for an FD?  I know the size of filter is important for max intake when running higher spec mods etc, but when the car is pretty much standard (Just CAT back system) is it worth going for a full induction kit, or will a decent panel work just as well?

>Quick question.  I\'ve heard the panel filters are the same size for the FD and FC, is this true? (Cant check as my cars are in different counties!)<

For performance the upgraded panal filter is the better option, if you want the noise but no real improvement go for the cone...........unless you get a proper cold air feed to the cones [which aint easy:( ]

Cant comment on the difference between FC & FD though

Ran mine with a K&N. Paired with a decat and down pipe she made 301 fly wheel. Cant comment on gains with filter only but was told to expect 5 - 10.

Hope this helps

I\'ve just taken my cones off to go back to a standard airbox and uprated panel. I reckon slightly less cold air is better than lots of hot air. The alloy intake pipes behind the cones used to get so hot you couldnt hold them!

It all seems to add up.  With out cutting holes and feeding pipe work everywhere I cant see a better way of getting cold air into the engine than through the air box.

Did see a nice airbox design yeterday, ARC I think?

There was an aluminium ARC box on US Ebay the other week I think.

You could always take the standard airbox and add a little extra cold air :

Hmmm never been at home with the idea of chopping holes in the air box.... Will have to take it out and have a proper look.

The aluminium ARC airbox is a pretty nice piece of kit. Trouble is finding filters that actually fit it. In the end I had to take mine out of the car and go back to the stock airbox when the filters started looking like someone had swept a chimney with them.

Don\'t suppose anyone knows where you can find panel filters in specific sizes? They\'re about 9"x8" overall, with maybe 8"x7" of actual filtering surface. I kinda miss having the shiny thing brightening up my engine bay. :)

[EDIT] Just to make sure we\'re talking about the same ARC airbox, a couple of piccys. Top (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v61/SilverRX/top.jpg) Bottom (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v61/SilverRX/bottom.jpg)

Twin filter setup, although each filter is slightly smaller than the one in a standard airbox. [/EDIT]
