Title: Test driven
Post by: Davegtt on October 11, 2004, 09:13:03 AM
Well i test drove a 92 Type R last night, and i have to say i wasn\'t blown away! I was trying to feel the vacuum drop at 4500rpm but couldn\'t feel it? would this indicate the 2nd turbo isn\'t spinning up? or is the transition between 1st and 2nd turbo not that noticable? I got back in my Mivec FTO and it felt nippier.

It did seem to run out of puff at the upper end of the rev range too?

I really want a Rex so i think i\'ll have to test drive a few more and see how they feel?

Dave :)

Doesn\'t sound right, you should feel a kick when the second turbo comes in. As you say, go drive a few more, loads for sale at the moment.

The lowliest FD will blow away an FTO everytime (stanard vs standard) so I\'d keep on hunting.

2nd turbo should be there all the way up to high rev so i would think there was not much boost on the 2nd turbo, was there a boost gauge?

Could be as simple as a blocked CAT.

Its not damped my enthusiasm for the FD I still love them to bits.  The external Boost gauge didn\'t work so couldn\'t see the boost is was delivering :(

seemed to start fine (hot starts) but was a little flat under 3K is that normal ?

I know a chap who is local who has one so I\'ll have a drive in that one and see how it feels. :) I know the mives pulls well right up to the red line but I\'m sure the FD will pull just as well to the end of the range.

Dave - get someone local with a healthy rex to take you for a spin - you\'ll have something to compare against then.

Regarding the drop in power as the 2nd turbo comes in - it\'s still noticable in mine but less so since the Apexi ECu and mapping.  I now have a much smoother feeling of power delivery.  If this was running stock ecu though it should be quite a big shove in the back.

Could be boost problems due to solenoids, vacuum hoses, intake pipes collapsing, blocked cat or something worse (turbo).

Another quick question, the boost gauge that was in it only had electical connections on it? no Vac hose, i\'ve never seen one before do they link into the ecu or something?

Cheers

Relatively high miler with no mention of a rebuild.  Expect it to need one within the next 15k miles for sure.   If you have a budget of 8k then getting this for 5k would leave you enough to rebuild.

I would reccomend getting it checked out by a rotary specialist - worth the £s.  Not sure who\'s closest to there though - could be Dragon, rx-motors or maybe WGT.

If it\'s suffering boost problems and it is the cat you can hammer them down on the price.  You could also borrow a mechanical boost meter, it only takes a munite to fit and then monitor.  If you can highlight boost problems then it\'s a powerful way of knocking the price down and could be cheap to fix (or not if it\'s the cat!).

If you have any doubts about the car or your budget wouldn\'t cope with repairs that may be needed then walk away and wait for one that\'s perfect (or as close as your money gets you)!

Look for a sensor/sender mounted in the engine bay, vac hose one side, cable the other, hence only a cable from the engine bay to the gauge.
