Title: Strange boost problem
Post by: Tintin on October 10, 2004, 08:00:00 PM
Here\'s one for you technical sorts

Coming back from from Pod I noticed that that when the second turbo kicks in in 5th instead of the boost staying at 0.8 it keeps going up till it gets up to about 1.1-1.2 ish , then it hits a flat spot and makes bbbbrrrrpppp sort of noise , boost backs of to about 0.9 then it starts rising again , its like it hits a rev limiter

I noticed this problem just after I got the car but thought it had gone away , maybe I wasn\'t nailing it hard enough in 5th for it to happen

It only happens in 5th , hit some traffic on the way back so when it cleared I tryed it in 3rd and boost stuck at 0.8 on both turbos

Any ideas ???

either way if you\'re not aware of ECU & fueling mods to cope with that boost anything over 1 bar should be back off time as i understand it........Sounds a bit like fuel cut can\'t remember if that is a possibilitiy thou?

As far as I\'m aware the fuel system is standard but the ECU has been upgraded to an RE-Amemiya one I\'m pretty sure its set for 0.8 bar as this is what it stays at in all other gears on both turbos

BBBrrrrrpppp noise is fuel cut, shortcut mod eto kill the engine.
I have no idea why that happens in that gear only, never heard of that symptom before:confused:

I\'m gonna e-mail RE-Amemiya to see if I can get the mapping details , had a look at the ECU got all the details off it only problem is some of it is in japanese

Brian , have you got any idea which bit they need ?

I don\'t suppose you\'dbe doing about 112.5 mph, and the speed limiter kicked in, or anything like that????

ps - Niky is wrapped about her Lab Coat!!  I currently have ALL the brownie points in the world!!  *grin*  I am dead grateful!  Cheers

rea ecu should have a type letter on it A, B or C  you can find info on it on rea website in the online shopping, boosting 1.1 I take it the REA button if you have one is in the on position then?
I\'ve got a B type if I remember rightly & it only takes it to 0.9 with button pressed

it is around 112 mark , but I\'ve taken her alot higher before , I\'m sure I\'ve had 140 ish , definatley had 120 numerous times

And a speed limiter dosn\'t explain why the boost goes up higher than 0.8

Nah the button is off , only used the button once and I think it went to 1.2 maybe a touch higher , I was concentrating on the road is it was a bit of a blur

From the details I got off the ECU there was a bit that stated MAX BOOST P 1.1  S1.0

Hi TinTin,

rather than speculate book the rx into WGTengineering and get the boost issue sorted or you may kill the engine by either over boosting or fuel starvation.

tel: 01606 48866 , ask for Pip.

They are based in Northwich J18 off the M6.:wave

Problem sorted ish

Pip took the car out for a spin and within a minute he had diagnosed the problem , boost creep , the problem only seems to occur in 5th due to the speed the ambient temp is lower , but as winter sets in it will happen more and more

The fixes available where - go for a single turbo setup - gonna cost a bit I thought , have the wastgate bored out - still gonna cost as theres about 10 hours of labour or try a restrictor in one of the pipes near the wastgate ( can\'t remember which one ) - cheap but may or may not sort the problem

I decided to try the restrictor untill it comes to rebuild time , then sort it properly probably with a single turbo

Well I\'ve lost about 0.1 bar but the problems sorted

Also picked up a HKS BOV and an alli AST , so I\'ve got some new toys to play with :cool
