Title: Rear speakers in a second gen?
Post by: Sean on October 09, 2004, 11:42:11 AM
I\'ve just removed the rear speakers to find that, the 5 and a bit inch speakers are suspended on dodgy homemade looking brackets.

Is this standard, only the dodgy looking brackets, seem to be fixed onto an 8" mount:D

Has anyone ever tried to change to this, it looks simple enough. But I don\'t know if it\'ll sound crap due to resonance or not.

Any advise would be appreciated

Cheers,
Sean:wave

standard size for the rear speakers should be something like 17cm diameter, 13cm for the doors, and 10cm for the bit under the dash,

Cheers mate, I\'ve sorted out some 13cm three ways in there now. But I got rid of the dodgy brackets the old ones were hanging from, and made up a solid plate of aluminium for them to sit in nicely:D

Not quite the sound I had hoped for, but it doesn\'t resonate like it used to:rolleyes:

Thanks again:wave

Got a feeling mine are 5" +/- but they fit quite snugly in the top of the suspension mount.

I\'ve found out why the front speakers sounded so crap!!!

The original mounts are 17cm, but my speakers require 16cm mountings. So there was quite a gap letting the sound waves move easily from the front, to the rear!

Not only that, but the magnet was sat on the window runners, inside the door! This would have been vibrating something rotten. When I checked the other side to look for alternative mounting methods, I noticed a 1/2 inch gap between the door card and the front of the speaker.

So I managed to devise a way to mount the speaker directly onto the door card, sealing the front of the cone off from the rear, and also moving the magnet away from the door internals by 1/2 an inch at the same time!

The result was astonishing. I would recommend anyone who wants better quality audio without spending on a pucka install to check this out. Turning up my stereo now, you would never think that it was only driving four speakers with tiny 13cm cones.

I hope this helps someone out,
Cheers,
Sean:cool

I installed 13cm 60w jobbies in the under dash positions, mine still had the origional flat clarion speakers installed.  I had to cut away a 13cm dia circle in the metal sub plate above the passengers legs to fit it that side but the sound is amazing.

What are you running as a head unit?

Only the entry level sony single slot CD (not even rds)

I\'m trying to squeeze as much motion out of the car before I spend too much on nice things.(Monies very tight at the moment):o
