Hi al, just finally joined the gods and got me an RX7! woohoo, that 9 hr drive from Cardiff to Edinburgh after pickin up th car was great!
I now seem to have 2 problems .....
Number 1 ......
The headlight on the passenger side wont come on and the dash lights are out too? Any common link? I know the dash has reverse glo dials in it and thought maybe somethin was up with them but the backlights fot the heater etc are out too. Any suggestions?
number 2 .......
Went to go fill up the baby (3rd time in 3 days!!!!) ggggrrrr! took it for a quick blast nice bit of power in 3rd to around 7500 rpm, then pulled into trhe garage. popped in some fuel, then pulled away,
then discovered that the car wasn\'t boosting properly!
It seems to pull ok and I can hear the turbos but, it sounds as if theres pressure comin out of somewhere, almost like one of the dump valves was stuck open if you get what I mean? It\'s dark just now so can\'t see anything but what should I check tomo when it\'s daylight?
Can anyone help bring my new baby back to health??

Hmmmm...the lights are normally very reliable, sniffs of some dodgy history to me....
Were the lights/dash all working when you picked it up/checked it over?
yup, the lights were fine. I have spent all yesterdayputting in a new stereo and did pop a few fuses but i checked them all and replaced whtever was blown. The engine was replaced around 10 to 20k ago so i would assume there may not be too much wrong there.
Ok, leave the headlights in the up position, but off.
Underneath the car, under each headlight you will see a small opening, which or may not have a cover over it, remove this cover and you will see a hand winder for the light. Try this by hand, if it feels tight then the unit is binding on something, if you can raise the lamp unit like this then it points to an electrical fault.
As for the dash, is every light on the dash out?
If so this does point to a fuse, check them all and replace any dodgy or failed ones.

i think that a common fault to be honest - the pipes have a tendancy to crack - best have a look in the day light
as a daft idea ( and DONT try this without some thought ) - can you not put some talc on the pipes - rev it and see if the talc gets blown off - this could point you to the problem
i have only just thought of this - so it may be very dangerous - it was just an idea though !! :)
first up, the light goes up and down ok but it just doesn\'t light up on normal beam, will be checkin the bulb when I get home obviously but it was dark last nite. just seemed odd that it happened at the same time as the dash lights failing. All the lights are out on the dash, heater controls and all. what fuse might it be?!
As for the engine, where is the most likely place to check for the busted hose/dump valve. I\'m assuming the leak must be before the boost guage hose cos the guage only goes up to 0.4 bar now.
is the second turbo kicking in ??
if not it could be a stuck selonoid ??
failing that - check the pipes around the 2 waste gates - and the pipe work running from the air filter
im sure someone more knowledgable will beable to exlpain better
and when you remove the lid from the fuse box - it tells you all what the fuses are - check the one called ROOM or summat like that
Sounds obvious, but check the dashlight dimmer dial (near the cigarette lighter, its easy to turn right down and think something is broken!
The headlight just sounds like a new bulb.

Well i\'m gonna leave it till Saturday cos when I get home from work theres not enough light to work on it. Damn those cold winter nites! Could use some help maybe on Saturday though. Show me an mR2 turbo and I\'ll fix it but this thing is a totally different. Much better of course, although in a strange way I do miss my old MR2.

The problem with no boost sounds similar to a problem I had a few days ago
I was giving it some on the motorway when I heard a bang , eased off wondering what it was , put my foot down again and there wasn\'t any boost , gauge read 0.4 bar and I could hear the turbo so I pulled over , after a little look around the engine I noticed the pipe from the turbos to the intercooler had been blown off :eek: poped it back on when I got home and no more boost problem
what hose is that?
i\'ve not really had the chance to master the engine compartment as yet.

Standing at the front of the car, there is a pipe coming from the turbo\'s at the left hand side of the engine, which comes up over the engine to the front just on the left of your alternator.
If you look at the engine bay you\'ll see 2 pipes ( oval ish ) connected to the intercooler , one goes to the inlet manifold the other disapears into the engine to the turbos , it was the one from the turbos to the intercooler that came loose on mine , just under the strut brace
did it come loose near the engine side of it under the strut brace?
Not enough light to tell really but that hose was wobbly. I pushed down hard on the end of it towards the rear of the car and i felt it go pop as if it was going back in, not had the chance to take my baby for a drive yet to check if that was it.

all the little neds inside were piled against the window in awe at the sight of the rex.
thus they almost hit the car in front of them ... before duly watching me sail past without any effort on the other side of them.

That was the wee bugger , on mine there was a silicone hose connector I had to loosen off the jubilee clip , pop the pipe back in and re-tighten the clip ,
if you don\'t secure it properly it will just pop back out next time you nail it , then all the chavs will just laugh it you :rollin mind you , you could still sail past there little chav waggons with no boost :rollin
It is amusing when they all stare open mouthed at a proper car , first day I got mine I pulled up outside the outlaws house and a group of them came over asking could they take pics on there phones , one of them even asked me if I was a footballer :rollin

I was going to take off the strut brace and the air hose above it but I managed to get to it with a socket and extension bar , it was a bit fiddley , an extra pair of hands to hold the clip in place will make it alot easier and a cool engine , I did mine as soon as I got home and the engine was red hot , ended up burning my fingers a couple of times :reallymad
woohooo, got my dash lights back on! i had knocked the plug off the back of the dimmer switch when i was messing with the stereo!
once again not much room! still i managed to get a pioneer screen and a dvd player in there!
now we\'re off for a trip to see if I managed to sort the boost problem.

a cavalier sri almost had me cause of it - soon as i put her in 4th and the turbos kicked in .........
