Title: Starting Problems?!?
Post by: hmltnangel on September 30, 2004, 09:50:53 PM
Hi everyone, still on my quest for an RX7. Seem to have found the perfect beast for me although today - 2 days before im picking it up I got a call saying that there was a problem with the car. Apparently when the cars warm it sometimes doesn\'t like to start. Even occasionaly when cold it has a few probs. Any suggestions?

Apparently the car had a new (rebuilt) engine suplied by Rotekniks about 10k miles ago (a year ago) and has generally been fine. It recently had its plugs leads and fuel pump changed but thats not solved the problem. Should I steer clear of this one or what?

Can recent rebuilds have flooding problems too?

Until I read the 2nd paragraph I was going to say it was heading for a rebuild...  could still be but it could be plug/spark related.

Poor starting from warm is usually a sign of low compression, from cold bad spark or water in rotors (water seal failure).

The engine could had low compression if the housings were re-sued but not in very good condition (to save money) or if it\'s been poorly maintained since rebuild...

Make sure any problems like this are fully sorted or the price reflects the risk if they\'re not (i.e. ~2k less if it needs attention).

well, apparently the car seems to be fine now .... possibly some residual vapour lock from the fuel pump change?? thats what the garage that done the fuel pump said to the guy.

what you reckon - I got it down to 5500 bucks

1992 RX7 Type R.

It has recently been resprayed as the lacquer was peeling,

It has Mazda speed split rim alloys with 225/45/17 and 265/40/17 tyres.

Coilover suspension,

Driilled and grooved discs,

Two dump valves.

It was fitted with a new engine and clutch 10000 miles ago.

It has a full stainless steel exhaust

Standard power is 280 bhp but with the exhaust it\'s about 295 bhp

It has a Toad a606i alarm immobilizer (cat 1)

The interior has been trimmed in cream leather with red piping, and all the plastics are colour coded.

Multi-Glow Dials

Air Con (just been regassed)

Electric windows, mirrors

Power Steering

Is it worth it or not? with the supposedly fixed starting problem?

also just had a new mot too.:wave

i found it on ebay, supposed to pick it up tomorrow but i\'m a bit concerned about the starting issues although i\'m kinda thinkin it might be worth it for the price..... hey a new engine\'ll only be around 2500 bucks. still reasonable even if the worst happens.

the engine was by rotechnics, so im assuming it eont be anything major. If you\'re looking for a good un I saw one at this address

http://www.hurley-engineering.ltd.uk/carsales.aspx

The yellow one seems reasonable??

if mines falls through (ie if its a shed) then i might put a deposit on the yellow one.......:bandit

I spoke to Hurley when I was shopping around for rebuilds and Aemon didn\'t inspire me with confidence at the time so I don\'t use them.  They do know rotary stuff but their guarantee is only good as long as they doo ALL the servicing on the car!

5500 is a good price for the listed spec!

hmmm how can i put this diplomatically, erm i cant again cause i think the guy is a cock! but my more factual account is on this thread (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4777&highlight=experiance+hurley)
Heard so many bad experiances of his workmanship it\'s not just me someone did say to me that he is actually quite an intelligent chap but well if i wana talk brainy i\'ll join mensa if i want decent work carried out on my FD it will NEVER go to Hurley again!
Si (think i\'ve made my thoughts clear (http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/contrib/blackeye/lol.gif) lol)
PS they may sell an occasional good one thou all you can do is compare cars if i\'m trying to be strickly addressing matter in hand sure many of the cars they have on their site are old ones which have gone now sure it aint Easter still? .....be surprised if he updates anything as he can\'t even do an invoice with anything meaningfull on it, oops my restraint has lapsed again (http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/otn/realhappy/op485.gif)
