Title: Silver 3rd gen \'P plate\' - Colchester, Essex
Post by: TonyBlair on September 24, 2004, 03:53:46 PM
Saw a sexy looking silver 3rd generation RX-7 in St. Botolphs Street in Colchester, Essex from my office window today (24th Sept) at around 3 in the afternoon.

It caught my eye instantly - I almost didn\'t recognise it looking top-down from 3 storey\'s up. But the sighting was confirmed but the un-mistakable rear-end of the Rex.

Was quite surprised as I\'ve only ever seen one other RX-7 in my local area.

Hi mate, it wouldn\'t have been me... mine is still in Japan awaiting shipping - should be here early November.

I have seen a Silver rex in Clacton - it\'s sometimes parked outside the Gym down the High Street, Holland road end. However last time I saw it (about 2 months ago) it had a \'For Sale\' sticker in the rear window, might be around these parts no more.

I\'m sure there are other RX-7\'s in the area, I just hadn\'t "noticed" any because I didn\'t know what an RX-7 was up until 5 months ago.

Where abouts are you from ScuttleRX?

I live in harwich, the girlfriend lives in colchester, and I work in Felixstowe, so if you see me its likely to be A120, A12 or A14 :)

The waitings horrible isnt it :D , last couple of weeks are the worst. Do you live in colc or just work there?

I live in Clacton, but work in Colchester - it\'s nice to know there\'s some locals using this forum.  ;)

Do you mind if I ask where do you take your RX for servicing/upgrades? I think there\'s one in Colchester called GBH Motorsport, and of course there\'s Nemesis Performance just down the road in Dedham?

Cheers.

yeah, its in langham but literally right next to dedham :)  For servicing ive been taking it to Jimmys in Norwich for the first few. Thought it would be a good idea for a specialist to see it first couple of times to give it a once over aswell, might try somewhere more local though now as its a bit far to drive each time. He is very good though, and all he deals with is rotarys :)

My friends been using GBH for his evo, he mentioned my rex and the bloke said he has had quite a few in there, my friends happy with his service, and theyre only £28 an hour so pretty cheap too, think i will be trying them soon.

Ive had some work done at nemesis, air filters, gauges, and a few other little bits, cant complain at the service, just its a bit harder on the wallet there, they have lots of facilites there now though, think theyre getting a rolling road down there too soon.

Parts wise I shop around on net mainly, have got a few bits from states, and various uk places like Shy Autos, Dragon, re-worx, etc and get them fitted locally.

Oh and I can recommend WGT for mapping, but its in Chesire so bit of a drive for us!

Theres a few of us on us fairly local, Carlos is Woodbridge way, and Gman, Inital-D are in Essex somewhere :) sure theres others too

Is that your car in the avatar? many mods/any planned?

Hi mate, the car in the avatar is mine, and yes I do have a list of things I\'d like to do with it. However I\'ve got to realistic about what I can afford to do. I think rather than plan some power-upgrade mods, I\'ll take it to a specialist to get it the once over and find out whether it has any problems with it that need resolving - make sure it\'s running sweet as a nut before I spend out on power-mods.

The first mod I\'m considering is an ECU upgrade. I\'m worried about what UK fuel will do to the RX-7. I\'ve read the even Shell\'s Optimax is only 98 ron, and the RX-7 will be set-up for Jap fuel which is... dunno, but it\'s over 100 ron. If I can get a new ECU then the car could be re-programmed for UK fuel, I think?

What about yourself? The fibre bonnet looks a nice touch. I did wonder what a carbon fibre bonnet what look like on a silver, but it goes well.  ;)

Hello mate, yeah that sounds like a good way to go, apexi power fc is a popular choice, its what ive got on mine, and yeah you can have it mapped to what you like :)

Its only a fibre glass bonnet, and I was planning on painting it silver, but when i test fitted it I really liked it in black so kept it that way :) may go silver one day, id like to have a full paint job one day though so may just wait and save.

Ive got a few engine mods so far, PFC, apexi intake, downpipe +de-cat+ cat back zorst, body bits are c-west, and ive had some little bits like gauges and EL dials. Theres a lot more id like to do but my insurance have got a bit funny and said i can\'t do anything else to it, and i cant find another decent one yet cos of my age, hence ive got a lovely set of coilovers in the shed i cant put on

I keep my eyes peeled for you in Novemeber :)  got any bigger pics of your car you can post up, looks a real nice one

Hi mate, thanks for the recommendation on the apexi power fc - I\'ll look into getting one of those.

So why did you opt for a fibre-glass bonnet over a carbon fibre bonnet, was it the cost, is fibre-glass stronger or lighter? I\'d never really considered fibre-glass as an option before, simply decause I didn\'t know you could use it for that purpose.

Either way I\'m sure there is a big benefit by having those vents there - bet it does a lot for keeping the engine bay temp low?

I haven\'t got any other pics at the moment. The anticipated date for shipping is the 26th (tomorrow) and the import company said they\'d send me some more pics when the "port inspection" takes place - which I assume is just before it gets put on the boat. I\'ll be sure to post some pics when I get them  ;)

It was mostly because I wanted to paint it silver   , and it was $200 cheaper, figured there was no point splashin extra for carbon fibre when im only gonna paint it. Definately not stronger but strong enough, it only weighs 4.5 kilo so imagine just as light too. In hind-sight, think I should have gone for carbon fibre, but im happy with it :) Vents help a little, when sitting in traffic can see the heat billowing out of them :D , can also hear the induction roar, turbo hiss and dump valve a lot more which is nice :)

Yeah Apexi is a good unit and well priced, ecus like the motec\'s are better, but come with hefty price tag, apexi is more than good enough for my needs tho. Also quite a few tuners about that can map the apexi.

I\'ll keep an eye out for those pics :)
