Title: Early warning signs
Post by: Tintin on September 23, 2004, 08:18:55 PM
Are there any early warning signs to indicate when the engine might be getting ready for a rebuild ?

I\'m hoping that this is not going to be anytime soon as i\'ve only just got the car , but it would be usefull to know if something is likely to happen

In searching 2 months for a decent RX I learned that loosing coolant is a sure fire sign that the seals are on their way out (makes seal barking noise).....

Poor starting can be a sign of low compression..

Mine went bang up the strip so i didn\'t really get much warning!

You know, when you clap your hands together and go \'ar,ar,ar,ar\'. Not something easily textualised.....

(come on 5pm, I need a pint...)

It\'s alright for some !!!

Looking forward to a freezing cold pint of Arc.

Then it\'s car time this weekend, put LED sidelight bulbs in, replace BOV tuning, tune BOV sound with nut on top, remove large front numberplate and replace with stick on undersized one, good polish, photos, quick burn, it\'ll be ready for the pod then !!!

Poor starting
rough idle
Air con on at idle makes it struggle
losing coolant
overheating

Mine recently went bang.

I had trouble starting, dodgy idle, power loss, high oil consumption.

Aside from the oil consumption and a bit of hassle starting it, everything else more or less just happened one day.

It was still just about driveable. Took it to the garage (which was fun driving through town in a car that doesn\'t hold an idle and if you let it stall it takes an age to start again ! :D ).

One compression test later it was obvious that i had sweet f all compression on one side.

The joy of it !

early warning signs..
lack of performance, water consumption, low compression. If it is losing water leave it sat for a while and and when you get back to it, take the plugs out and turn it over. if water spits out the plug holes then proceed with tears and sticking bottom lip out. ( yes I speak from experience:( )
Other signs are like everyone elses advice, hard to start, wont idle.
Hope that NONE of these above stated comments apply to you.

No problems yet , I\'m just wondering what to look out for when the time comes , be alot easier to drive it to WGT if it starts looking sick than waiting for it to go pop

Could the difficult to start bit also be anything to do with the immobiliser. Cos mine has been difficult to start since i got it albeit the mileage kinda suggests its around rebuild time, but i have had no other probs except starting.... :(

Hope it gets back from Pod in one piece....
