Title: Confused About Precat
Post by: RobbieRX-7 on September 22, 2004, 10:26:02 PM
I HAVE A 92 JAP IMPORT TYPE R AND HAVE READ THAT IMPORTS DONT HAVE PRECATS..MINE DOES (IM PRETTY SURE).  IT HAS A SORT OF HEATSHEILD JUST LIKE A NORMAL CATALITIC CONVERTER WOULD. ITS NOT ROUND LIKE A NORMAL EXHAUST BUT SQUARISH WITH SEAM WELDS ON BOTH SIDES AND THE WHOLE THING BENDS UNDER THE FOOTWELL.  BEHIND THE STEREO GETS BLOODY HOT WHICH CAUSES THE MP3 PLAYER TO SKIP ALL OVER THE SHOP SO THIS IS WHY I PRESUME I HAVE THE PRECAT. ALSO  IVE RECENTLY BOUGHT AN HKS DOWNPIPE AND I KNOW ABOUT THE ECU RUNNING LEAN BUT CAN I RE-MAP MY ORIGINAL ECU OR WILL IT NEED AN AFTERMARKET UPRATED ECU.
THE CAR IS TOTAL STOCK
THANKS CHAPS

erm i\'ll stick to what i know & that is standard ECU can;t be remapped at least here so new ECU is only plan apexi power FC probably the most popular cunning choice for not stupidly OTT mods...... lol
Dunno bout the other bits....

PS Cov meet on Sun?

if downpipe is only thing yer doing not sure if you might get away with that mind but normally cunning to do ECU sooner rather than later mod wise......

Hi mate,
i am no expert, but Chris who is rebuilding my engine for me is, and from what i gather from him yours is the same as mine, a jap import, if it was a UK model it would have a pre cat like a rugby ball in the downpipe! mine hasnt and the air pump only connects to the centre cat! and i will leave mine standard, for fear of running my new engine lean, i\'d rather not risk it,
Hope this is correct, as i said thats how i understand it!
cheers Bob

JUST OUT OF CURIOSITY..how do you know that the air pump only connects to the second cat? ..is there a pipe running from the air pump to there? , when i done the vacuum hose replacement job i noticed that a hose runs from the airbox to the air pump then from the airpump to the inlet area (not to the cat)

Hi Robbie,

The pre cat thing sounds real weird and as described above they look like a rugby ball, whatever l advise removeing it as you are because  they cause a huge amount of heat, but when you remove yours  l would like to know what it is you have fitted as it sounds real strange.

There will be a 10mm steel pipe running out of the air pump leading down the side of the gearbox into the main cat under the car.

hope this helps
Title: ECU .....
Post by: Smifta on September 23, 2004, 10:12:21 AM
Robbie,

If you would like to run your decat (HKS), and maybe do a few other mods without going for a full programmable ECU. I have a stock ECU that has been rechipped for a richer mixture. I have dyno plot of a/f ratios / boost / bhp / torque to prove it! I was running intake/frontmount/full exhaust and still running slightly rich. I would probably recommend getting a Power FC anyway, but if you can\'t stretch that far now, PM me :)

Alex.

My J-Spec car has the same thing by the sounds of it, but all that metal shit around it is just a heat sheild. Have you ever seen a picture of a pre-cat? They\'re fricking huge. Recon you shld be ok with the HKS downpipe, not sure how much of an advantage they offer with the rest of the stock exhaust in place. Might be worth heat-wrapping it to try and reduce under-bonnet temps a tad.

Hi mate,
i took my engine out last week, and mine looks the same as that, it is a lot of heat shields round downpipe, there is no cat in mine, and no connection from the air pump, which only goes to the main cat, big flat one further back, they are the jap spec cars, which i gather do not have a pre-cat. i will leave the downpipe as it is on mine, standard! engine being rebuilt by Chris at the moment.

Yeah, that\'s the bastard! No cat there. Found a cut-away schematic of a US-Spec Rex, you can see how big the pre-cat is from that.

oh yeah!! why didnt i think of that..duugh!!

well in that case i im sound then. At least i aint gotta get the thing off anymore :D   mind you though..would it be worth replacing it anyway??  trouble is, if i do then i run the risk of snapping the manifold bolts off and from what ive heard.. YOU DONT WANNA DO THAT!!

Nah think ill leave it and spend my money else where

cheers lads
