Title: lumpy idle
Post by: saxon on September 21, 2004, 02:17:20 PM
hi all, very new to this, had fd3 of 92 origin a couple of weeks. My problem is a lumpy idle and misfire at very low revs then clears and runs fine for a week maybe? At the same time i get greyish smoke outta the exhaust when lumpy and i do seem to be using oil, probably half a litre every 200 miles. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Thanks for the reply! the car has done 44000 miles on a rebuilt engine, its a totally standard rx with an auto box. Its done just over 100000 on original turbos and gbox.

Very hard to diagnose, suggest you take it to Rotechniks in Reading, they are probably closest

You should always get things checked out asap in case its doing more damage = more expensive

Not sure how relevant this is but I had lumpy idle due to spark plugs not being properly tightended and requiring a new fuel filter, since then everything has been well.

Oh a mate of mine has an rx and his had the smoke problem, but we put it down to the fact he had not used it in 2months and prior to that it was not rev\'d above 3000 due to town driving.  Clearing out the carbon?

Thanks for the help, i have changed the oil so the plugs are next. Will have to take it to a garage as i agree, it could cause more damage.

hi guys,

I posted a thread ten days ago and cant find it now... DOH

was a simlilar problem, just got a \'93 and it is running a bit lumpy from idle to 4k rpm then gets too quick to feel if it continues...

it had had a plug and oil  changes and I think and oil filter change, would it be worth while getting the fuel filter changed...

does need to go in for a 60k mile service... so it will be done then...

I am hoping it is just because it has been sat on a boat for a while and then at the importers place... though it has had a few good runs and hasnt got any better... hmmm we will see
