Right i realise this was debated a while ago but canna remember the outcome??
Is BP ultimate as good as Optimax???
The reason i ask is due to the local optimax output changing to BP pumps last week and the other closest one is like on the motorway!!!
Any views guys??:(
Gurj
ps - will BP ulitmate threaten the rx engine @ high performance too??
I think Ultimate is a lower Octane
Yea i know that Dave but will it damage thee rotary???
PS- you got PM on the FDUK forum buddy about tomorrows reading meet?
Gurj:wave
yeah but Carl reckons its cancelled tomorrow ??
I don\'t think it would damage the roatary in anyway, can\'t see how it would, use some Octane booster if you are worried perhaps
Tomorrows 21 SEPT he says 21 OCT cancelled????
Unless he got the months wrong perhaps??
I don\'t know, will try and ring Dave to find out
Had a quick look at the fixtures list theres no game for reading tomorrow???
They play sat away @ watford and then on the 19th Oct v Leeds @ home???
Confusing no???
just spoke to Dave at TVMOT who spoke to Def, and theres a late rearrnaged game or something so its off, though Henning is organising a FDUK meet I think
ok keep us posted dude?
To answer your question, BP Ultimate is 97 (the same as any other super unleaded) and Optimax is 98.
97 is perfectly safe if your car is stock.
Quoted from an earlier thread:
"You can run your car on unleaded 95 but it will not be safe when driven hard. The higher the RON of the fuel you put in, the lower the likelyhood is of detonation or \'pinking\' occuring.... which incidentally can be fatal to a rotary. Many people including myself use Optimax RON 98 as it is the highest octane rated fuel available from the pump in the UK. Modified Jap imports with aftermarket ECU\'s will have been mapped for 100RON fuel and if running high boost levels you will need to put octane booster in too- or get the ECU remapped for UK fuel. Hope this helps."
Surely if your car has been mapped on 97 its safe I would have thought
Indeed it would be perfectly safe to run fuel on which the ECU has been mapped on. But GSB876 has not indicated what fuelling modifications, if any, he has carried out or inherited on his car, so I have tried to offer the various likely scenarios.
ok bit of confusion going on here,
what i wanted to know was with BP ulitmate suposedly for high performance cars right?? The optimax we usually use is 98 ron i know that and i know that the bp is 97 ron. Not disputing that what i wanted to know was how much difference is there between the two???
And no i dont mean 1 ron differnce what i wanted to know was the possibility of detonation - ie how much more of a chance is there???
Hope thats clearer??? my car has been mapped at wgt engineering only 3 weeks ago running on uk fuel of optimax, car is running T78 turbine setup into the high 400\'s bhp figures!!!
No comment from you here "HIPPY"!!!:rollin
Depends how you drive the car mate.
1RON won\'t make much difference unless you\'re thrashing it. Which with the power in your car would be scary enough on a road.:D
Basically it\'s 1% more of the fuel you put in which might not be octane, and therefore may be more prone to early detonation.
What boost are you running?
I think.
I dont run over 1bar too careful with my car:rolleyes:
OK, so at over 1 bar your car is running quite high boost. Your first thread referred to the prospect of pontential engine damage resulting from using BP Ultimate while driven hard,
Quoteps - will BP ulitmate threaten the rx engine @ high performance too?
By running a lower RON fuel to the one your ECU\'s map was configured to, even by one point.. would be introducing a risk (albeit very small) of premature detonation (pinking or knocking).. which incidentally can mean the death of your rotary engine. As your engine is in quite a high state of tune and mapped for 98 you should put 98 in and no less..at least that way you will be safe. Using a higher RON fuel than this or booster additive, although not harmful to your engine..would simply be a waste of money.
If you have a commander (assuming your ECU is a PFC) you can monitor the knock levels if you choose to put lower grade fuel in although I really do not recommend this.
Thanks for the info matey:)
Will have to travel the little extra distance to get Optimax then:(
Couldn\'t you just have it setup to run on 95 RON so at least you know its always going to run safe (as safe as a rotory can be). Would it be ok for the injectors ? For the cost of super (can easily be as much as 6p a litre more  ) isn\'t it just better to have it setup to 95 RON ? Won\'t any pfc or the like be paid off by the cheaper fuel bills, even though your putting more in it tank ?
Shaun
I think on the performance side of things its not ideal to use 95ron, especially with my car setup running a T78 turbo you wanna put the best stuff in??:)
I guess if you have a completely standard rx and are not gonna be driving hard then yes it would be better to set it upto run 95ron;)
either which way better fuel has to be a good thing (OK watch some smart ass prove me wrong (http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0304/aetsch/cheeky-smiley-012.gif) lol) & when things can get expensive when things go pop in the night

so for me it\'s always optimax (make a point of always trying to know where they are on wotever route i\'m taking...) with a portion of NF from time to time just to make sure. Then i do have 30 bottles of the stuff still & a nice optimax reward card so be rude not to :god

PS look another shark thing:

mmm..Optimax reward card  tell me more. I never new they existed. The only promotion Shell have done to my knowledge is the trump cards.
usual reward card... points mean prizes type stuff.
There are forms to get them in most shell stations, but I don\'t recall ever being offered one. I figured they must do one so looked for the leaflets.
I just did a search but nothing came up. I will have to enquire though...all the thousands of pounds on optimax I\'ve spent with no reward, only to find I could be a proud owner of a can opener, or one of those Texas electronic personal organisers...or a glass set..or crease resistant trousers..
regarding the mapping to 95 ron question, am I right in saying that mapping to a higher octane fuel would allow you to use a more aggressive/powerful map without increasing the risk of detonation, i.e if there were two identical cars one mapped to 95 and one to 98, the 98 would be the better performer?
Absolutely. The higher safety margin/ decreased likelihood of det occuring of the latter will allow more advanced ignition and higher safe levels of boost pressure attainable by the engine tuner.
it is basically an add on to the standard reward card as i understand it where you get extra points for erm can\'t remember if it\'s it\'s twice as many or sumin 1/4ly based on how much you spend. Dont think you can actually ask for one i got mine after nearly 2 years of using the normal one so presuming they still do it i guess it just takes a while for them to recognise yer addiction

lol
