Title: A good news post
Post by: johnf on September 18, 2004, 06:41:25 PM
Hi

Read the forums most days and as to be expected there is a lot of ppl with problems seeking advice with rotary related problems.

Well I thought I\'d post about my car. I\'ve had it for 21 months and it was due for a service [43k]. Following posts about WGT in Cheshire [mainly from Si] I booked it in for a full service on Friday.

I had a few questions regarding the minor mods, street porting [ is that minor], induction and exhaust system but still the stock ecu and I\'m getting even lower than average mpg   :( .

The service was completed and I\'m told the engine is sound in all departments :)  Just makes me feel better.

Will definatly be taking it back to WGT next time.

I was also told [due to the ecu] that I\'m runnig rich on low revs and lean on higher revs, causing my crap mpg. As I\'m quite a \'conservative\' driver this shouldn\'t cause me any engine problems. However a new ecu would add about 5mpg per gallon so I have to decide.

Thats all just 21 months and 15k of trouble free motoring.

I hope i haven\'t tempted fate posting this.

John

If it helps you decide mate, I think my stock ECU was doing the same thing, but didn\'t really pay that much mind to the MOT place that said something of that nature.

I just put a PFC in with no other mods, (preparing the way for them)  The car dyno\'d at 260 fwhp on the stock ecu.  280fwhp on the PFC !!  and I get better fuel economy as well as the delivery of power being so much smoother!

Edited to add that my engine has not been rebuild and has done over 64,000 miles

a new ecu correctly mapped!!! may help your mpg.  Running too rich doesnt do a rotary engine any good especially if you are a conservative driver as it builds up carbon quicker which doesnt get burnt away if you dont thrash the car occasionally.  Running rich at idle can sometimes be caused by a problem with the air pump but i\'m sure pip would have spotted this. Has your MPG always been the same or has it deteriorated?       Also something that a lot of people forget is the Lamda sensor, they do wear out and are easy and cheap to change,  if its seen its best days it can cause the car to run rich at Idle.  Saying all that if you fuel economy has been the same since you\'ve had the car then you have nothing to worry about, carry on enjoying you good luck with an RX.   Be careful you dont get linched by some of those less fortunate than yourself who have been on here recently. There have been a few that have just bought cars and within weeks have water leaks etc.

Good thou John boy that all is well & long may it continue....
ECU has to be a winner if it saves you money + better performance + allows any other toys at a later date but that\'s just me being devils advocate (http://smilies.jeeptalk.org/contrib/ruinkai/FIREdevil.gif) lol

John,

I have just bought an RX7 with 43k on it from New Era.  I\'m glad to hear that your car is running sweetly.
I have never owned an RX7 before and obviously am very green to the rotary engine.  I carefully considered my choice when I bought that the looks and performance far out way the fact that there may be some reliability issues.  It\'s nice to hear that there are cars out there that don\'t have problems and cars that always answer "yes" when asked!!! ;)

All the best,

Matt

PS.  We should have more posts of this nature!!  Bulletin boards by nature will in the main only contain questions of problems with people looking for help!

I managed to have 2 sessions in my 96\' 3rd gen over the weekend (one day time, one night time),  it\'s just passed 30,000 miles and I have to say it is all in perfect running order :D  It might run a bit rich, but I\'m always careful to give it a regular blatt to clear any carbon build up ;)

I was out scouting for a good photo shoot location in Milton Keynes, I want to get some decent urban-esque night time pictures.

Plenty of lakes about, I remember getting some good shots of my GT-Four by Furzton Lake but that\'s probably overgrown by now. Try Caldecotte Lake or somewhere funky like the Ouse near one of the viaducts.
