Hi there,
Just bought an import, that was personally imported last year. It hasn\'t been undersealed for the wonderful UK winters, I guess just the standard splash+dash that the Jap cars tend to have.
What is the normal underseal that is used under the car and in panels? Is there some industry standard stuff that should be used, or is a tub of good ol\' Waxoil good enough?
Cheers,
Andrew
I think the best stuff is Dinitrol (spelling???), but any bodyshop should know what to use.
Fish
the best stuff is the self healing type that only drys on the outside and doesn\'t have the risk of rust forming under the underseal (a common problem)
Dinitrol is so weerd its like alive if it douse get chiped it has magnetic enzimes whitch draw the gap together it feels like skin aswell lol
Guys,
Do you definately need to have the car sealed underneath?
Gareth
nope
underseal ain\'t essential but does make a big difference to the likelihood fo the rust monster eating your car.
I could be wrong, but I think the jap cars do get undersealed, unfortunately they do the undersealing, then bolt on the running gear etc so that doesn\'t get undersealed. I\'ve been meaning to do mine but not got round to it so will be watching this thread for suppliers and prices. Happy to do it myself rather than paying a bodyshop so just need the stuff to paint on.
that dinitrol stuff sounds funky.
my uk supplied 323 has no underseal on it (only under the arches) and neither did my rally car and neither did my other jap import 323 and its the same case with my UK supplied \'old\' rx too.
underseal is quite a good idea if you plan to use your car rain or shine
did ask this when i imported mine & i think the concensus was if it\'s done well then good plan long terms but getting it imaculately clean & done perfect is the challenge i passed at the time but the "Dinitrol" sounds interesting......:god
Si
Mine\'s not undersealed but I make sure to wash off all mud and salt from under the car in winter (at least every weekend if it has been out during the week).
I got Waxoil on mine, seems to do the job nicely :)
Saw some Dinitrol yesterday. Says was based sealing system - so pretty similar to Waxoyl, I presume.
Thread resurrection:
Just got mine professionally done by Michael at Rustmaster.co.uk
Very good service and very helpful

Ash you have PM
Mark
i have the same question also.
car has no rust at all after a year and a half in the uk but i am worried its not done.
Hi there
sent you a pm but to summarise: It cost about the same as 2 to 3 tyres. I got the impression that he knew what he was doing, and he had lots of suitable kit. He seems like a nice guy who takes pride in his work and he was willing to lift the car up on stands so that I could have a look (it looked very tidy).
It took over 4 hours. I drove it to him and he gave me in his car a lift into St Albans. Then I mooched around the shops then did some work (planned in advance) on my laptop in the local library. He collected me as arranged then I drove home.
Overall: impressed

cant figure out price properly but you didnt pay £1700 did you!! :2eek
I gave mine a good seeing to with a Schutz gun, compressor and some of this Bilt hamber cavity wax.
http://www.bilthamber.com/dynaxs50comparison.html
I spent a Sunday pulling all the body work plugs and wheel liners out. Then blew in a load into the box sections, subframes, boot, doors, wings etc until it was dripping from every hole. Made a bit of a mess of the drive but hey it\'s a small price to pay to keep it nice for years to come.
Cost £40 quid which is a bit more expensive but the test results on their webpage look encouraging. I\'ve used there other products before and they did exactly what they said on the tin.
Sounds like you have stone chip and Underseal mixed up.
They put Stone chip around the areas that have more risk of getting hit by Stones that will take off Wax or even paint to the metal causing rust.
Nowadays they Wax cars under the floors etc but as you are proberly aware cars wax goes soft with heat and can litraly run out of the panels on a hot day but at best it gets thinner over time and often hardens and cracks so the best thing to do is to have all the places that go rusty rewaxed every 5 years or so (places like the inside the rear 1/4\'s, the inner joint of the 1/4 - inner 1/4, full length of the inside of the Sills and any where that will gather water when winter kicks in)
Its also important to clean the mud from inside the rear wheel arches regularly so it doesn\'t collect moisture and if you wax oil the floor make sure you get it Steam cleaned off to remove any salt/Dirt that may have collected that will stop it from doing its job properly.

I paid £517 inc VAT.

OMG....... I hope you get a good garantee with that.
im thinking the same, very interesting to hear though.
i thought the average price was nearer £150 or cost of materials and diy
Thinking about it, it wouldn\'t be to hard to get that sort of bill in Labour, most Mechanic\'s are charged out at £60-70 an hour so if the labour is anywhere near that your only talking 6 hours plus materials.
So the moral of the story is find a decent Bodyshop and get it done there, Bodyshops Labour is kept low by Insurance companies and is about £25 an hour there\'s you difference plus Bodyshops get better Discount with materials suppliers (they buy paint etc from the same place and the bills is about 2-3k a month).
Ive had my last 3 imports including the FD done by Wax works
http://www.thewaxworks.net/ (http://www.thewaxworks.net/)
They do a very thorough job inside and out including a steam clean first and I think the price of £330 all in is reasonable considering it takes two of them a day to complete the work.

Forgot to mention the smell.
The car reeked of Waxoyl for months afterwards. It\'s gone now
After driving Rex, I smelt of Waxoyl too.
I\'m sitting in a business meeting at work and aware that I smell of Eau de Waxoyl. LOL.
If I had done the job myself I reckon I would still be smelling of it nine months later, and I guess that most things in the house would smell of, or be smeared, with Waxoyl. The stuff gets everwhere.
For me , it was better to pay someone who is equipeed with the right kit get into all the nooks and crannies to do this really sh*tty job.
If you look at the guy\'s website, a lot of time goes into preparation. He has made tools to get into awkward corners. Waxoyl is all he does. He\'ll never rust, but you would know if you were sitting next to him in a bar.!!
Has anyone encountered broaching oil. ( Oil used in a broaching machine tool) !!. It\'s worse than Waxoyl.
