Title: Still here
Post by: Don Pamponi on September 17, 2004, 10:38:21 PM
Blue RX is still in the garage waiting for its rolloing road (this weds).

New wheels, new turbo, new stereo (dynomat the lot).

Just a bag full of niggles & no time to sort them.  I run my own business & its taking most my time.

Got a blowing exhaust, dodgy clutch MC, mystery clang/rattle, big flat spot & wobbly steering wheel, too much boost (10psi!!!)

Goes like stink once your away tho.  Bogs down at low revs, then takes off like a rocket.  All or nowt.

Whattayagonnado eh?

is the mystery clang from the front suspension IIRC ?

If so I seem to remember clive having troubles with the new struts, check the big nut that sits inside the spring on the thicker part of the strut and check that it has a clearance between the top of the strut and the bottom of the nut, otherwise it might not be clamping down on the insert properly, my new struts came with shims to make it fit, I had to use all of them to get it to clamp up tight.

Well now

I got the RX over an inspection pit, jacked it up and went over it with a mechanic freind of mine (one of our members, who put the elford kit on for me).

EVERY SINGLE NUT & BOLT UNDER THE CAR WAS LOOSE!!!!!

Struts, the lot.

Wel I think we found where the noise was comming from......

The Bastid wont start again now the carbs been off.  Ho hum away we go again.

Title: struts
Post by: Don Pamponi on October 02, 2004, 07:53:49 PM
Could you explain the strut thing please?

It seems like one is still clanking (after we did it up properly).

Im new to this, I\'m used to cars where you can see the actual shock absorber inside the coil, or next to it.  I don\'t really get the strut with mini shock inside business.   Does one rattle inside the other ?

Where would I get shims for it?

I am in the long winded process of setting up a digi camera (got to buy a card reader cos its incompatable with XP etc etc...):reallymad

Anyhoo, Im waiting on this to be able to take photos so I can show what I\'m on about, and show off the new paint on the floorpan!

yes, theres a shock absorber that sits inside the the strut itself, it is held in place by the big nut on the top of the outer strut, the kit i got was supplied with some shims that were required to make sure that the nut grips the strut and doesn\'t just tighten down onto the outer strut without holding the inner in place.

if you look through the spring, the nut you are looking for is very thin and is on the top of the lower fixed section of the strut, there should be a gap between it and the stut body

damn forum won\'t let me post it full size but here goes anyway

These are the parts that hold the strut in place (also shown are the shims)

The inner strut is shown at the top

The bottom left is the nut that sits in the strut top bearing under the bonnet

bottom middle is the nut that holds the inner strut inside the outer

and the bottom right is the two shims that sit on top of the inner strut between that and the big sheet metal type nut. As shown in the instructions they ensure that the strut is gripped tightly by the nut.

Thanks Mike,

I\'m with you now.  Perhaps I need to get some shims.  I\'ll phone Tim at RX motors & see what he can do.
