Title: turbo, on none turbo?
Post by: james on September 13, 2004, 12:22:01 PM
ive noticed a company in america sell turbo kits, you can buy with, header, turbo, wastegate, bov, and intercoolers, seems fairly cheap!

so like on a normal horrid piston engine, you have to use low comp pistons, and heavy duty head gasket, what needs upgrading in these rotary engines, or are you ok at low boost, not to do any mods?

I really would\'nt bother TBH, I\'m running an EGi thats around TII hp anyway, save the cash and upgrade what you\'ve got.  Or just buy a TII, at least that way you know its all good.

Full spec of my car is as follows:- (Also look under a thread in this section called \'How fast is your Egi\')

Rebuilt engine 16k ago.  Exhaust ported, cones removed, intake ported and polished internals of the manifold (intake).
 Thermal reactor removed.
 Uprated oiling system.
AFR ratio has been modified by altering presets on the sensors. (Runs rich at idle........but its all good at the top end)
K&N cone with cold air ducting.
 Air pump removed.
Custom exhaust, starts with two 2.5" pipes direct from the  ports,  join into one 3" pipe then Y section leading to two 3" back  boxes.
Hydrostatic fan removed and electric fan installed. (Thank you Volvo)
Under trays removed and bonnet back end modified to aid
 cooling to engine.
 Reconditioned/rebuilt calipers.
 Slotted front Brembo\'s.
 Green stuff pads front.

(All work was undertaken by myself and my father during a week off in 2002, so its proven to be reliable)

I know that its fast enough to cream a standard TII off of the lights and when already travelling.  The thing that did shock me about it was at the Hickstead meet I was able to keep up with the 3rd gens!!! (Although I had begged them to play fair at the services though! :D )

None of the above was particularly difficult and Pip et al will no doubt be able to build you a bigger and better one!  Next on my shopping list:-

 Microtech ECU
TII gearbox and diff. (I keep on destroying the clutch plate)
 Polyeurothane bushes all round.
New shocks and springs all round.
Full rub down, rust treatment and respray.

I take thats what you wanted to know guys?
Alternatively, you could always make me an offer for the car....?

Nope I\'m in Germany the start of next month, and the missus is expecting in early November, so no more trips until after the sprog is a few months old.
I need to replace the clutch anyway.

Does anyone know if a TII diff would be a straight swap?  I\'ve only got one spare left now.

to answer my question, as nice as your figures are, what mods would be needed?

whats the point of having a gen3 if its not a turbo?

not meant in a nasty way so dont get upset, just if i were going to spend a few grand on a gen 3 it would have to be TURBO all the way;) :D :wave

I think you got the wrong end of the stick!  Egi\'s are the N/A series 2\'s!

The mods needed were listed in this post, mostly its just down to derestricting the engine.
And dont worry, I dont think you\'re being nasty! :wave

I suppose, but why buy an N/A?  You may as well get a TII, that way you\'ll have all the running gear etc for a turbo.  But I really would\'nt consider a turbo conversion when theres already a turbo out there!  :)

One thing it will do is kill your insurance! :yes

Dont forget that you will need a new ECU as well.  But if you do decide to go for it you will have to provide lots of pictures!
