Title: which gauges ?
Post by: Tintin on September 12, 2004, 05:55:06 PM
I\'m planning on getting a tripple gauge pod for where the center speaker is and am just wondering if anyone could suggest which gauges would be most worth while getting

at the mo I\'m thinking oil temp , water temp and A/F ratio

I just want to be able to keep a better eye on what the engine is doing

(short term memory loss mode on as i was looking at it earlier) do you already have a boost guage then that\'s gota be an essential....?(http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/ups/sicdeth/headscratch.gif)

PS look here\'s ya car:

Yeah already got a boost gauge , by the way whats EGT ? is it exhaust gas temp ? if so why is that so important ?

Sorry if I seem a bit thick but I\'m new at all this whats my engine doing stuff

Post by: scooby_si on September 12, 2004, 07:45:25 PM
yeah that\'s EGT not sure entirely myself but as i understood it it can give a sign of how the engine is running but that they can frequently go awry AKA melt not sure if i\'ve just made that up mind.........
Not sure what the concensus is on what\'s cunning/best although water & oil temp certainly sound a good plan i\'d be intreged what your intake temps are as well but that\'s as much for my selfish comparison with my modified cold air feed as anything....

Apart from the Power FC i have oil temp / boost / exhaust temp.

Think they are all essential in knowing your car is running well:)

PS - Sorry didnt make the midlands meet, how many we get??? rx wise???:)

Good choises with the oil and water temps, but I would swap the AFR for an oil pressure gauge.

is the stock oil pressure gauge unreliable then ??

Gurj ,

there were 3 of us there , me , si and wav

it was good to meet some of you at last , its nice to put a face to a name :D

think it\'s probably similar to the water temp one in that it doesn\'t really tell you anything specific till it\'s probably too late......& the one Fish mentions would be good for telling if anything was awry etc (dont quote the ignorant one, ie me, on that mind...)
Good to meet you too BTW & hope your lady + little un wasn\'t scared by us strange petrol heads (http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/contrib/icw/020.gif) lol

yeah we had a good day , the missis wasn\'t bored like she thought she was going to be , she dosn\'t think its sad any more

Been loking at some dual gauges with digital readouts , come up with a combination that I think would cover most thinks

Oil temp/Oil pressure
water temp/Fuel pressure
Intake temp/Exhaust temp

what are peoples thoughts , I think these are the same gauges Fish has SPA Design
Title: which gauges ?
Post by: Fish on September 12, 2004, 09:27:53 PM
Mine are oil temp/press. in one gauge, and inlet and EGT in the other.

I am not that fussed about getting a water temp gauge as the oil temp will give me an idea of whats going on. I.E. if the car is up to temp for full play mode or not. ;)

They are good looking set of guages, what make are they and where can you get them please.

I found there website here (http://www.spa-uk.co.uk/design/dualgauges.htm) don\'t know about prices yet hopefully they will get back to me soon

Fish

what did the gauges cost you ? and did you get the senders and everything or did you have to get them seperate?
Title: which gauges ?
Post by: Fish on September 12, 2004, 10:16:10 PM
Yeap, they are SPA dual guages. They have now release another colour backlighting.

They came with all the sensors/sendors expect the EGT probes. Which I would still have bought my own anyway.

Cant remember what I paid as I bought them about 4 years ago.

Blimey !!!!

Got an email back from SPA Design with prices for the gauges

Oil pressure/Oil temp - £126.60
Water temp/Fuel pressure - £126.60
Intake temp/Exhaust temp - £118.11 plus £69.74 for intercooler adaptor box , £19.11 for themocouple , £69.74 for EGT adaptor box and £43.48 for a k type thermocouple

and the dreaded VAT needs to be addes on top

WOW a whopping £673.72 for a few gauges plus about £70 for a tripple pod

That was a bit more than I was expecting but I suppose that is for 6 gauges could get it down to about £550 if I dumped the water temp and fuel pressure

how does it compare to what other people have paid ?
Title: which gauges ?
Post by: jetpilot on September 13, 2004, 06:02:58 PM
Thanks guys, they are cool guages.

I dont think the price is too bad really, you would pay £100 ish for a decent single guage, i would probably go with oil temp + pressure and a boost and something else guage. i think they would be the most important to monitor + maybe air fuel ratio.
Title: which gauges ?
Post by: Fish on September 13, 2004, 06:31:38 PM
OK you get to monitor 6 things, instead of 3 for about the same money.

If you think that is expensive, do not look at the Defi gagues.

I would never pay those prices for the EGT sensors. Get them from RS Components, a hell of a lot cheaper.

Post by: Tintin on September 13, 2004, 07:03:46 PM
Fish ,

that is a fair point , however I did find the defi gauges for £380 ish for oil temp , oil pressure , water temp

still can\'t decide what is most important to keep an eye on , obviously oil pressure and temp are quite critical , water temp is also one I\'d consider being really important

but as Fish stated oil temp can give a better idea about engine temp , but would this give an indication of low coolant

I suppose intake temp is worth knowing as well , don\'t quite understand why EGT is important ( if someone knows please tell me )

I would consider air/fuel ratio quite important as running lean is a big no no , unfortunatley SPA don\'t do a matching one
Title: which gauges ?
Post by: Fish on September 13, 2004, 07:29:28 PM
EGT as like AFR are used primarily for tuning (mapping). A lot of the tuners that I know prefer EGT to AFR, as it gives better detail of what’s happening.

If I was going for 3 single gauges I would take oil temp/press. and water temp. Intake temps fall in the first section, as the PFC could give this information.

The other worth thinking about is a boost gauge. And I wouldnt use an SPA for that.

SPA will make gauges up as per your request. ;) Not that I am trying to get another SPA user. :D

already got a RE Amemiya boost gauge so that ones covered

I do fancy the dual digital gauges so i think I\'ve definatley decided on oil temp and pressure on one

Just gotta decide what to get on the other one or two

another option is a 4 in 1 gauge I \'ve seen , its got oil temp , oil pressure , water temp and air/fuel ratio

its 3.75" gauge and its only £150

Forgot to say , already got an RE ECU so don\'t think I\'ll be going down the PFC route unless I decide to play around with the engine a bit

Fish

Can you remember if you could get all the intercooler adaptor box , EGT adaptor box and relevent probes from RS as this is whats punping the price up a bit

OK, below are the links to the relevant pages on //www.RSWWW.com

Sensors â€" K Type
http://tinyurl.com/5rajn

Sensor Compression Glands
http://tinyurl.com/3zz76

Link to main sensor selection
http://tinyurl.com/4qj8r

As for mounting, we used to drill and tap it using the glands.

The only bits that I missed are the connectors for the SPA adapter box.

Right had a quick look through the site , unfortunatley as I\'m not entirley sur what I need I\'m not much wiser

I understand about mounting the sensors using the compression glands

But I\'m not sure which sensors are required , and when you say you missed out the connectors to the SPA adaptor box do you mean plugs for the adaptor plugs meaning you hard wired the sensors or you just missed out the adaptor box and connected the probes directly to the gauges

Sorry if I seem think but I\'m not quite sure how these digital gauges work , I understand how mechanical gauges work but all this talk of adaptor boxes and control boxes I\'m getting a bit lost

Did you fit yours yourself ?
Title: which gauges ?
Post by: Fish on September 13, 2004, 09:15:24 PM
I fitted mine with a friend, doing his and my car that same day.

I used the 228-7489 (3mm, 25cm) sensor. I picked this one because of the heat of EGT. For inlet temps you could get away with a 1.5mm sensor (228-7445).

I used the 381-7340 gland.

And finally I used one of the following (http://tinyurl.com/5dxzg) (pink in the picture, but green in real life), but cannot remember the exact part number.

That link dosn\'t want to work , can you describe it and I\'ll try and find it in the catologue

Also how did you go about connecting the probes to the gauges ? directley wired to the gauge or through a couple of there adaptor boxes ?

Alternativley you could be a sport and connect mine for me , I\'ll buy you a pint or two of shandy ;)

Dont know what happened there. Try this (http://tinyurl.com/6trpt) one.

The SPA\'s use an adapter box, so using the conenctors above. Well its easy really.

As for fitting, sorry far to far up north for me. :( Its not that hard, honest. ;)

Fish ,

every time I try and open that link it comes up with a page saying \' session timed out \'

very strange , all the others seemed to work

Gauges are gonna have to wait for a while now though , found out I\'ve got a buckled wheel , which a mate told me would fook up the suspension , wheel bearing and driveshaft if left ( I didn\'t think they could do so much damage ) , anyway did a bit of ringing around and was told no one will fix a buckled wheel so I\'ve ordered a new set of rims

Pain in the ass as well because I couldn\'t get the ones I wanted coz they don\'t make them wide enough to fill my wide arches , i the end I went fo some Momo Quaser 2\'s , I hope they look right as it was the missis who found them , fingers crossed

Dont worry to much about the guages, as the thread wont be going anywhere... ;)

8 x 17\'s thought about getting 18\'s for a while but it would have cost me an arm and a leg , 235/45\'s on the front and 245/45\'s on the rear

should have them on by friday :cool
Title: which gauges ?

shouldn\'t that be 255/40\'s on the rear? wouldn\'t want skinny ones personally......

I just told them whats on it at the mo

erm i\'ll plead ignorance given i misinformed you where the AST was recently (http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/contrib/ed/wink2.gif) lol sure the standard ones are 255\'s thou so wouldn\'t wana go narrower but as i say i could be wrong.....(AGAIN (http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/contrib/ed/smiletongue.gif) lol)

Si ,

Sorry to tell you this but I think your wrong again , I was getting a touch concered about the width of my tires as I was told I couldn\'t go any wider than 245\'s on 8x17 rims

To get anywider I would have had to go up to 18\'s and even then they only had a choice of 2 styles which they deal in , both were naf , so I stuck with the origional choice

Any way , did so checking and I pretty sure stock tires were 225\'s , if I am proved wrong I will retract this next statement

Stock tyres on 16"ers are 225\'s as i understand it but i\'m sure 17\'s are 235 & 255, not sure what the width of the wheel that is on i confess & i could yet be wrong but go on someone say i\'m right i promise not to gloat (much (http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/contrib/ed/wink2.gif) lol) but it happens so rarely (http://www.computerpannen.com/cwm/contrib/sarge/Blurp_anim.gif) lmao
