Title: Rebuild advice...please help!!
Post by: tailz on September 10, 2004, 11:13:17 AM
I am looking for some advice from those more knowledgeable than myself (most of you I imagine!). My v belt has snapped again (3rd time in 4 months) and with the air pump having gone last month, I am pretty sure a rebuild is on the cards (\'94 FD - 40k miles, but who says the mileage is right?!). I am thinking about just getting it done anyway so I can start afresh, so to speak. My questions.....

1 - I have looked through the relevant magazines and have come up with the following companies who rebuild - are there any more and do any of you have any experience with any of them (price, time, quality, warranty etc)? Jimmy\'s, RX Motors, Dragon, Nemesis, Roteknics & WGT Autos.

2 - Whilst I get this done, I want a few low engine mods for more power (but nothing too $$ or scary!). Has anyone got some ideas of what\'s best - (it is my everyday car). My total budget is about 4000 pounds (sorry, I am abroad at the moment and the keyboard has no pound symbol!)

3 - Does anyone have a contact for a low loader to get it taken to wherever I decide? It has a C West kit on and cannot be towed - last time it was taken away, the RAC sent a hydraulic jobby that\'s used for Ferraris, but the chance of me getting that again is very low.

Any advice would be greatly received - the pressure is on from my better half to sort it or sell it, as it spends more time off the road than on it!

Cheers guys!

Had mine done by Carl Hayward (see banner), but as you are that far north, I would look at WGT as they are that bit closer.

4k should get you the engine sorted out and a couple of mods. ;)

Quotethen you\'ll need to get it mapped

Making sure that all the ancillaries (including the turbo chargers and manifold are in good order before mapping!

Dave, I think you could get the mapping included for that price.

But I dont know what Pip charges for it.

I had mine rebuilt by WGT in december.  Pip and Co did a great job.  I had small porting done on it while it was out as it paves the way for future power gains.

The cost will really depend on how worn it is - mine needed new housings which seriously bumps up the price.  If it\'s in a good state then it could be ~2.5k for a rebuild with porting.  I\'d also reccoment getting something like the apexi ecu and mapping.  This\'d probably get you to the 4k mark (as things are never simple!)

Depending on where you want to take the engine in the future it could also be a good time to get the clutch changed (something like the exedy single plate is a good step from the standard unit) - that\'d save you £s as the labour would be lower than replacing the clutch with the engine in place.
