Title: Rear brake piston problems
Post by: KOAD on September 08, 2004, 10:46:58 AM
I need a bit of advice and possibly a favour.

I started to change the rear brakes on my Gen 1 and have hit a stubbling block.

The piston on the caliper needs a special tool to "wind" it back in. Does anyone know where I can get one or does anyone have one I can borrow?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

It\'s a fairly standard caliper winding tool.  basicall just a flat bar with two small bolts through it about 2cm apart.  Easy enough to make one but should be possible to buy from anywhere decent (would expect even halfrauds to sell them).

I borrowed one from an Elise owner and it worked fine.

if you find one mate, please post up and let us know where and how much.

I looked in halfrauds and couldn\'t find one.  gonna have a go with a pair of needle nose pliers this weekend now that I have my new pads.

Will do!

Tried the needle nose pliers already. Success on one side but the other is a little more stubborn.

If I don\'t find the exact one I will be looking for some pliers halfway bewteen snub and needle as the neddle ones tend to bend.

Has anyone else any suggestions?

Pete

It\'s been rumoured that a 17mm open ended spanner will also do the trick.  Not tried this myself!

Sorted the problem.

Draper do a universal socket attachment for £6.

Not a perfect fit but does the job

where\'d you get that from mate?
I just used needle nose pliers on mine and they did the trick but a socket attachment would be easier in the future.

I\'m sure I\'ve seen that sort of tool in the local Halfauds along with the Sykes Pikavent special tools (probably IS on of SP tools actually)

I got it from a VKM in Burgess hill. Had it in stock. I am sure you could get it online if you search for Draper.I will try to dig out the stock number and the phone number for VKM
