Been looking round here for a while now, learing about these RX7\'s been doing some homework and as much research as I can but what I really want to know is are they really as bad at going bang as they say????
I\'m looking at autotrader at different aged cars, some J/K/L reg cars with 30-45000 miles on the clock are in my price range, dont want to spend more than 10k really.
Are the early ones gonna be more prone to popping as the owners were less aware about the engine and how to look after it??
Could somone please shed some light on how much its gonna cost me if I get a later one with 55,000 on the clock, it seems they need a rebuild ever 60k from what I read on here.
I\'m scared to death about a 4k engine bill, are they that expensive??
Whenever I call anyone who\'s selling one they tell me its running fine, what I need is you guys to tell me the truth, I test drove one today and I\'m sold.......its the most sexy, evil car I ever drove, blows my mr2 turbo into the weeds.
I guess its kinda like dating a supermodel in a way, sexy but high maintanance.
I\'m In southampton so is there anyone round here that could do a compression test on it???
If a rotor goes can is still be driven??
Will be a second car so will only be driven maybe 2-3 times a week max.
If any of you guys are local (ish) to me could you send your number so I could pick your brains for a couple of minutes with honest owners answers rather than sellers answers and maybe advise me in some way of what to watch for?
Thanks in advance, fingers crossed should have a nice black one in the next month or two!
Will check this thread but if you want to mail me a number so I can bore you with questions lol (steviejay69@hotmail.com)

Buy one thats been rebuilt then. Im just waiting to do mine (thursday) and then itll be up for sale. Would be about 8k I think I havnt decided yet untill I actually have it working.

re:worx are based in portsmouth so not too far - Geff will do things like a compression test and give a car teh once over (for a fee).
There are some bad examples out there and there are some that are not bad per se but die shortly after someone buys them.
Such is life.
Conversely there are a few really good examples that have been well looked after. For 10k you could probably get something decent with a recently rebuilt engine. Personally I\'d go for something a bit cheaper and make sure I have access to 2-3k just in case. Problem is the modding bug might get you and you spend the rebuild £s on toys!
Iain
your nicely located for a few specialists for both bits, work & otherwise as there\'s RE:worx (http://www.reworx.com/) builders of the current fastest UK 1/4 mile RX7, over in pompey (if yer feeling brave :rollin oops mustn\'t tell him i\'m a saints fan else he\'ll probably never speak to me again....lol) & Tim of RXmotors (http://rxmotors.co.uk/) again in Dorset & probably the biggest RX7 bits man in the UK & nutter er i mean owner/driver of the fastest gen 1 RX7 in UK......as i recall.....
People normally say to budget 3k for an engine rebuild although it will vary depending on whats gone pop how seriously you should have a nice meaty one i\'d imagaine with 4k for such an event.....
Dont think there\'s any exact science with which year/age of car will go pop when as with all performance cars it\'s largely how well it\'s been treated & you may easily find a minty fresh \'93 or a heap o turd \'00

Sure someone local will volunteer heir services matey &/or ask away for anything more specific you seek?

Holy crap that was a quick reply!!!
Thanks for that, you might be right, but how much is a rebuild down south?? (sorry just saw one post and the time it took me to reply there were 2 more!!)
This is what I need to know if its worth buying an earlyish one and keeping some cash for a rebuild (depending on how many sov\'s its gonna cost)
Rather than stretching myself to a late one and having Egor ram me from behind to pay for some new tips.
Whats your btw??
Whats the spec?

Best bet would be to purchase a rx which has had a recent rebuild, looking @ cars with 40k on them will require rebuild possibly within 15k???
I myself have seen lots of decent rx\'s for sale on the net, have a look under the section for advise on buying i have posted a thread on what sort of cars you will get for a decent price.

Hi Steve,
Just sent you email of one i just bought needing a rebuild, which i will do myself, im told that either RX motors, in Dorset or Pip at WGT are good for any parts needed, i am rather looking forward to doing the engine myself, i dont care how long it takes, its just nice to see it waiting in my drive and its mine!
cheers Bob
thanks man, didnt get your email though, will keep my eye out for ones with recent rebuilds, best place seems to be autotrader at the moment.
