Black smoke indicates to much fuel, way to much fuel in fact.

Sounds like you need to book it in with a specialist to resolve the problems you have.

Well either one of two things will happen.

1, You will find the cash and have it properly looked at.

or

2, You will sell it to some poor person who will have to resolve the problems that you created.

It might be some thing simple like the map sensor not plugged in?

At a guess, I\'d say you\'re ac and ps won\'t work.  You\'re sure this isn;t the belt for the airpump?  If so and you\'ve got a cat, then this could be the cause of your troubles...

That\'s  a  bit  strong  considering  the  lad  and  his  dad  bought  a  scrapped  non-runner,  isn\'t  it???

He\'s  technically  done  better  than  most  here (Inc me),  and  he\'s  not  even  got  a  licence  yet!

Don\'t  lose  heart  Yonner,  keep  at  it,  and  it\'ll  be  something  you\'ll  be  proud  of  -  esp  as  you  guys  are  doing  it  yourselves!

1  -  make  sure  it\'s  full  of  coolant
2  -  remove  the  cat,  and  see  if  it\'ll  run.
3  -  make  sure  it\'s  full  of  oil
4  -  the  fuel  filter  is  above  the  rear  axle  (apparently).    It\'s  an  arse  to  do  (apparently)  but  worthwhile  -  esp  with  the  work  you  are  doing
5  -  remove  the  elbow  to  the  upper  intake  manifold  -  if  the  turbo\'s  are  a  problem,  this  should  allow  it  to  idle  OK.
6  -  DO  NOT  REV  IT  ABOVE  3K!!!    If  it  is  feeling  sorry  for  itself,  and  needs  attention,  this  will  do  nothing  but  harm  -  esp  if  it\'s  cold.

You  were  talking  about  rebuilding  it  yourself  anyhow  -  if  it  is  screwed,  this  could  be  another  chance  to  learn  stuff  about  the  engine!!    At  this  rate,  you\'ll  be  one  of  the  experts  on  the  car  before  you  are  old  enough  to  be  insured  on  the  damn  thing!!!

Yep I agree, stick with it you\'re doing a great job and besides you learn 100x times more from the mistakes you make, however important or insignificant:D

Where is this oil coming from? are you sure you\'ve torqued all the turbo oil feed and drain pipes up properly? and did you use new gaskets on them??? If it\'s oil in the boost pipes not on the outside of the engine, then yes it could be blown turbos. If its oil on the block and in the engine bay it is probably just a leak. Did you use your old turbo\'s or did you use the ones that came with your 2nd hand engine????

Good luck with it all and I\'m sure you\'ll get all the problems solved,

Paul:)

P.S. Try not to run the engine without coolant:rolleyes: ;)

Post by: yonner on September 08, 2004, 09:46:54 PM
wow prob the first bit of niceness ive came accros on this forum ;the coolant is full the oil is coming from the clutch slave cylinder. the ramp has decided to chuck it so getting under it aint gona be a joy but im gona try without the cat

the turbos were the original 1ns but we used a special heat proof cocking instead or at least thats what my dad called it as he held his hand over the big bit of righting that said "MASTIC!" we torqed everything  according to the manuals spec.

there is no oil on the oustide of the turbos just the intake is soked

1 - make sure it\'s full of coolant - full

2 - remove the cat, and see if it\'ll run. - il try that

3 - make sure it\'s full of oil - oil full and has good preasure

4 - the fuel filter is above the rear axle (apparently). It\'s an arse to do (apparently) but worthwhile - esp with the work you are doing - il try that

5 - remove the elbow to the upper intake manifold - if the turbo\'s are a problem, this should allow it to idle OK. - so jsut remove the full upper manifold? adn then start it?

6 - DO NOT REV IT ABOVE 3K!!! If it is feeling sorry for itself, and needs attention, this will do nothing but harm - esp if it\'s cold. - its not liking to get above 500 never mind 3k

1nce again cheers guys

Also, try checking the plug leads are on in the correct order, TW Whites helpfully put mine back on the wrong way round once (T&L mixed up) and it ran like a dog!

Another thing (Which I doubt you\'re going to want to hear!) is that it sounds like it could be running on just one chamber?  Are you sure your getting ignition on both rotors?  If the idle is really rough as well then it could well be running on only one rotor...

Dont get disheartened mate!

PS By the way, well done on your last post by the way, it was readable!!! :D

Quote5 - remove the elbow to the upper intake manifold - if the turbo\'s are a problem, this should allow it to idle OK. - so jsut remove the full upper manifold? adn then start it?
NOOOOO!!!!  Just the bent elbow from the intercooler to the upper intake manifold!!  DO NOT START THE CAR WITHOUT THE UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD ON!!  ((actually, will it even start then???))

Good luck.

Quoteit could well be running on only one rotor
hadn\'t thought of that - if you can keep it going, it may clear enough to run on both...

Title: smell the smoke
Post by: wookie on September 09, 2004, 07:32:14 PM
no this is not a joke
smell the smoke coming from the tail pipe don\'t inhale too much tho.
if the smoke is white in colour and smells oil\'y then the engine is burning oil,
if it\'s white and smells funny not oil\'y but an unusual smell it\'s sucking in water and pumping it thru the engine,
if it\'s black smoke and smells of fuel then it\'s not burning the petrol being sucked in, or not all of it anyway and is again pumping it thru the engine and out the back.
this is a good and easy way to start to diagnose this sort of problem on any car

Agree with that, l was like 8 when me Mum found a moped engine in me wardrobe that l was trying to get apart, we all start somewhere.

O/K there\'s lots of things being suggested here and hopefully we will get there and all find out what is going on with your motor, this type of thing was after all why MRC was set up ,to help people
BTW what is the model, a T11?

Try this one, after starting pull a vacuum pipe off of the inlet manifold put your finger on and off the metal piece and see if the engine changes note, Rich said check the map sensor the same as l would have said but don\'t forget if you have no vacuum feed due to a huge leak the map sensor can\'t work.

BTW l twigged you was serious about Rotors when you had Dad bring you to Rotorstock, thanks for coming all that way.

Hmmm if your getting black smoke then it sounds like your MAP sensor/fueling/cold start are all ganging up to give you a shafting...

Was the car running ok (ish) before you flooded it and took the plugs out????? If so then chances are you\'ve just got your leads the wrong way round, so check that first, oh and obviously smell yer tail smoke;).

Good luck,

Paul:)

If you are trying to fix it in the wardrobe like Clive you may be putting it back together wrong due to lack of light! Just tell your mum thats what the kitchen table\'s is for and to stop whining! ;) :D
