Title: I feel a bit geeky
Post by: J4P RX on August 31, 2004, 11:24:50 PM
In wondering if I could get the weight of an FD down to 1 ton, I have just weighed my seat.

15kgs.  Unfortunatly I have not weighed the Bride seat, but I do remember it being significantly less from feel.

So 2 seats, plenty of weight saving easily to be had :rollin

You\'d be amazed how much even the crappiest little bit of plastic FD trim can weight the best part of half a kilo!

I thought the same when I fitted my Bride seat Lee, way lighter than stock, maybe 10kg?

After I did that, I lost the stereo, speakers, air con, rear belts and rear wiper. I should have weighed it all.

I really want to put the car on a 4 wheel scale and check front to rear weight distribution, then move things like battery to exactly the right spot.

Nothing wrong with geeky, if it makes a lighter car even lighter!

Yeah I have lost the stereo too :o

If I do decide im sticking with RX7\'s, I think im going to end up stripping it anyway.  Or quite a lot of it,  certainly from the driver back.

Then theres air con, and air pumps, and sound proofing and spare wheels.  Must be able to lose a lot without even thinking about it.

One of your biggest easy weight losses will come from removeing all your carpet and sound deadening

Yeah I ended up weighing myself with and without the seat to see its weight.

Wish I hadnt used that method :p

I have to say after getting mine back I rushed the stereo back in along with sub, then after going for a drive I turned it off as it was spoiling the sound of the engine!

Just wind down the windows and listen - (you can see me driving down the road with my head out the window)!!

So I\'m very tempted myself to start ditching the stereo and components, I took out the spare wheel as it\'s not going to do alot with 18\'s on the other 3 hubs. The seats make a difference as do passengers! :rollin Just keep the drivers seat in there and lose the passenger one!

Hi Lee, wiring loom would be around 20kgs, you don\'t need all of it - but to trim it is a HUGE!!!!!! job.

The body deadener would be around 10kgs in total, and a SHIT of a job to remove (I did mine! would be 2+ solid weeks of work).

Power steering gear is heavy, A/C is heavy.

In a few months time, we may be able to weigh mine with suspension on etc.  we are aiming for 1000kgs final, but it will be tough to do that (probably 100kgs of rollcage to go in).

Something like a wiring loom would be a bit extreme.  I can understand it on yours bit it would be too much for me to think about!

I know the deadener is a pain, but I have a few friends who have done that on theirs so some good tips :)

I think I like power steering too much as well :p

Get some acrylic windows and rear boot lid - that\'ll save some weight! Swap all the panels for carbon fiber;) :D Can\'t be cheap tho.

rx7store.net sells a carbon fibre rear boot lid with the plastic type glass (forget the technical name)

A somewhat stupid question but where is the sound deadening on an FD?? Under the carpet?? I had my carpet out the other week and all i saw was bare metal everywhere, unless it was some sort of liquid deadening???

Body deadener is under the carpet, check this photo (it is the darker red areas - so not everywhere).

This was taken after, all the parts showing grey or bare metal had the body deadener on it (it is like tar):

Bloody hell! No wonder it took so long to get out, no doubt it shaves a fair bit of weight off the car though!

its a right pain to remove - best way is to use a chisel - thats how mine is coming off :)

i read on the yank forum ( so not sure how true it is ) - but for every 100lbs you remove its 0.1 of a second off the 1/4 mile run ( it could have been 10lbs not sure )

infact 10lb sounds more feasable - 100lbs seems a lot of weight to loose

they go mad though - remove P/S , A/C , elec windows , mirrors , window glass , spare wheel , jack , ICE , seats !!

well I\'m most of the way there, all sound deadening gone (except the thin layer of odd tar type stuff which is next), carpets, rear seats, parcel shelf boot lining, spare wheel is next along with jack (don\'t need it in no spare and replace with foam based tyre filler. Ally bonnet. so now what I need is a CF sunroof panel, remove the roof, door and side panel lining. replace rear screen with perspex item and poss get rid of Power Steering pump. Wha hey!

i have mailed a few people about carbon fibre roof panels - but no ones come back to me yet

i dont understand how people can run a company when they dont answer emails ???

Looks like a big task, how much louder is it when removed? How do you pass your MOT when this is done?
Title: I feel a bit geeky
Post by: grinder on September 02, 2004, 05:02:09 PM
i cant see the MOT people minding that you have taken out the sound deadening - they cant see under carpet if you put that back in !!

did my sound deadening in the 323... didn\'t take too long. just make sure you do it on a cold day and try to get it to crack along the creases in the floor then it comes off in big chunks (must\'ve done 4 or more cars now !)

Ive been informed that dry ice is your friend for this job :)

I used a heat gun, and bar & tar remover (like thinners - but not as strong), lots of cloths.

I started doing it with a chisel/paint scraper but it was wrecking/marking the metal.

I did mine with a big hammer and screw driver .... but then i\'m a rough bugger :) (and you don\'t see it as I have to run carpets)
