Title: What can be done with rusty looking wheel hubs?
Post by: chrisBoid on August 27, 2004, 11:18:57 AM
My hubs are rusty and I don\'t like it!  I do however like the stock braking system so I don\'t want to replace it.

Could they be \'treated\' somehow so they wouldn\'t rust and look better?

I am planning on doing something to the tired looking (but perfectly functioning) calipers too; I have seen these painted which is an option.

Here is an example (sorry to Wav for re-using one of his pictures, I don\'t have one handy!) of the rusty bit: -

Wire brush of sand blast them, and then paint with hammeright.

Just dont paint where the wheel mates to the hub.

Yeah I painted my calipers and the paints held up well, was going to ask about the hub aswell - no need now.

Can you get aftermarket ones that don\'t rust at a reasonable price?

Also looking for some nice wheel bolts (black/Silver) but so far they seem to come in at £4.90 each, any suggestions??

I\'ve just fitted some black diamond discs to the front which look 100% better than the rusty stock ones (plus cool grooves).  The bell part is treated so it shouldn\'t rust like the stock ones do.

Aha! Sounds like magic, only thing is being black do they still have the bling factor? Do they have rear discs too? Oh and my last question... how much do they cost:D

Depends which you get you can get get \'Drilled\'  \'grooved\'   &
\'Drilled & Grooved\' sat in my Kitchen.
I have D&G with \'Predator\' pads
Cost me £300 from Demon Tweeks,
Clive can get them for quite a bit less though.
But needed them quik for Trax.
I went for the Black Diamond bits for Less dust, performance,
and thought they would look good behind my white AVS wheels.

Back to the original Q. though the \'bell\' part of the disk can be
cleaned with emery cloth, just rotate it round should come up ok
my old ones look fine just by doing it couple of times ayear.

What grade would you recommend (OO, O, FF, F, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 or 3)?

It might be harder to get at the vertical rusted surface but I\'ll give it a go.  I have no idea what the hub part is supposed to look like under all that rust...

Good tips folks, I think I\'ll have a scrub of mine and see how they come up. Then perhaps look into some new bits if I do a crap job!
