Title: Boost
Post by: jetpilot on August 26, 2004, 08:47:25 PM
A question for the more technical on here!
If for example you are running 200 bhp with 7 psi, is there any way to easliy equate a figure if you were to run 14 psi. Its way beyond me but someone might know!

Geff\'s car made approx 400 at 14psi and approx 500 at 21psi which equates to about 14-15whp per psi increase between 14 and 21psi. Couldnt tell you how realistic that is, sure some clever dick will give you the answer though. I\'ve read as much as 25hp per pound of boost in some places?

Who has the clever answer?

doesn\'t it depend on the efficiency of the compressor side (and i suppose the turbine side) of the turbocharger ?

lots of simple formulae work in a perfect world but do not in real life

Indeed Mike, I\'m sure its far from a simple equation; many variables effect it I\'m sure. Not for a minute do I have the remotest clue - just giving the only example I have to hand of how boost can effect output...

The simple answer is that there is no simple answer.
There are simply to many variables to take into account.
Kind regards
Carl;)

I have been meaning to do a lengthy post on the  variables involved in turbo systems. Time has been limited recently ( making an awful lot of ignition systems for caterhams at the moment).

Anyway as a taster, the maximum theoretical gain from 7 to 14PSI is 32%. But for reasons I will try and explain as soon as I get half an hour, it will generally be less than that.
