Title: Brilliant Insurance Quotes
Post by: Matt.Wild on August 25, 2004, 06:49:03 PM
Just had two brilliant quotes today (bearing in mind i\'m going to be 24 when I get it with 5 years NCB).

One on classic insurance, one on standard insurance.

Classicwise, via Houghtons  i\'ve been quoted £360 if its kept garaged or £425 if its kept off the road with only £375 excess :D

On standard insurance I, via Insurance Factory I was quoted £940 fully comp plus £300 excess and the ability to drive any other car I like 3rd party.  Seemed pretty much the very best prices possible (Flux, HIC Sureterm etc wanted £1500 +!).

Just thought some of the younger members would be interested :cool

They are excellent quotes mate. I\'m the same as you, 24, 5 years NCB but was told by Houghtons that they wouldn\'t insure on classic policy till I was 25.

what is it with inurance companies and completely different answers depending on the member of staff who answers the phone. I\'ve shelled out £1300 FC through Adrian Flux with £800 excess and limited to 5000 miles.

Is the classic policy mileage limited? What do they value the car at?

cheers

Gareth

Yep i\'m 24 and with Chaucer through Haughton and the quote they gave me was much cheaper than all the other 2  companies I could of used being younger than 25 and they seem good so far.  Hopefully when I come to renew at 25, the car will also be over 10years old so should be able to get classic (i.e cheap) insurance, excellent:bandit :D

Cheers, Paul:)

Sorry, its going to be stock for the 1st year of its time with me till I hit 25.  Mind you, i\'m gonna have a word with them to see if mods can be done without much effect as i\'m interested in a cat back zorst (leaving that cat in place, restrictive I know :() and maybe a aftermarket Mazdaspeed front bumper and side skits but if that doubles the price, I can wait :)

Thanks for the Advice on calling Houghtons.

I Spoke to a guy called Richard Smail ( very very helpful), he passed on my details to a specialist underwriter.

Ive been quoted £358.80 and £100.00 excess on a 94 Type R.
Fantastic quote and very helpful people.

Definetly give them a call and see what they can do.

This Guy Richard said he has been getting a lot of calls about Rotaries so i told him Houghton are all over this site.

He said they could do some mods too?

Cheers

Maybe it also depends on your postcode/area?

They actually said to me "We may struggle to get them to quote since you are 24, but we will try".   A few hours later they rang back with the above quotes.

The only proviso was park it off the road or in a garage :D

I\'m with Footman James through Houghtons.  I have declared all my mods (98% styling), they don\'t seem to mind unless the mods improve performance :)

These guys are the best quote so far for me - only minimum requirement is Thatcham 2...  + £250 Excess

They\'ve quoted me under £700.00 in SM2 postcode  for social/domestic + commuting (I\'m 28 with 5yrs NCB) I did stress that it was an import + completely unmodified...

Richard that I spoke to said he\'s been bombarded with quote requests - sounded very please for the business - told him his details are on the forum - was very chuffed!

will wait to get a hard copy to read the small print though...

Looks like I\'ll be going through them...

Thanks for the info

:cool

Thanks for the recommendation to Houghtons...

I\'v managed to get mine down to £612 per year (28 yrs old, 5 yrs NCB SM2 postcode - fully comp social/domestic + commute - under 5K per year)

Only requirement is Cat 2 imob - amazing - cheapest I had previous to this was my old company (Bell Direct) at £825

Looks like I\'ll be going with Houghtons - only thing is they say you hav eto pay by cheque by full yearly amount - but is definately worth it!

The guy there is Richard - very nice guy, v helpful - he\'s getting lts of calls from everyone here - he says RX7\'s have all become very popular in the last week or so!

Craig

So am I right in thinking that to get a wonderful quote from Houghtons you need to be 24/25, and have a car 94 or older ?
Title: Brilliant Insurance Quotes
Post by: davehg on September 06, 2004, 11:28:28 AM
i managed to get a quote in the end on my 94fd, you can pay by installments but they charge 10%. i was quoted for 12,000 miles 4yrs nc modified with proteceted nc 927 with 450 excess or 843 not protected.

just got to see if its worth cancelling and loosing 3months nc with tesco and paying my 180 cancellation fee but i wouldnt have to spend 600 to get a tracker fitted as i only need a cat 2 for houghtons insurance so thats got to be a big saving really.

looking at it, my policy with Tesco does not expire until January
so I wouldn\'t cancel it now anyway because I want another years no claims
Paid about £1650 I think in Jan which was the cheapest I could get

Perhaps in Jan I will manage it on a cheap classic policy etc as it will be 2005 :)

Wow...

Just got my quote through from Houghtons and it\'s even lower than I expected - £522.80 (28yrs old - 5yrs NCB - SM2 postcode - under 5K per year, S/D + Commuting with Cat 1 Thatcham - no mods - standard car)

Underwriters are Chaucer Insurance...

It\'s a done deal....

Thanks for the recommendation...

To go off at a tangent here slightly. Who were the peeps that were insuring the FD as a second car and insuring the run about as a first car with the same company?

Am with A-plan at the moment, but as Im 40 at the end of the month, I think that the £970 that they want, (which is less then £30 down on last year!), is a little on the steep side.

It has to be said though that my car is far from standard.

All suggestions and insurer\'s welcomed!

Ian

Hi Ian

Interesting, my other car is with A-Plan but they said they couldn\'t insure imports. Is yours a UK 3rd Gen?

I thought I\'d test Houghtons out:

33 yrs old, clean licence with 5 yrs comp car NCB, fully comp cover for everyday use as my only car, unlimited miles including the wife on a stock 94 gen 3 worth about £7.5K. Stored on a driveway at night with a cat 2 immobiliser

£527 with £350 excess

Hi Guys

Glad we are able to help some of you out!

I see there are a number of issues being raised here.

To try to clarify:

We have two schemes with Chaucer Insurance.

Scheme A is for second cars, ie where you own and have full use of an everyday car and the policy is issued on a restricted mileage basis. It does not require no claims bonus.

Scheme B is where you car is your everyday vehicle. Discounts are available for resricting the mileage but umlimited mileage is available. The policy does use no claims bonus.

Generally speaking, the insurers are looking for over 25\'s but we are sometimes able to twist an arm here or there.

We have a close relationship with the underwriters and they will look at individual cases on their merits and will cover imports and mods, depending on what they are, taking in to account age and experience.
There are many factors which influence their decisions, those mentioned above and obviously postcode, garaging, security, BHP etc so sometimes we get a "yes" for one client and a "no" for another for seemingly similar risks. As we are actually talking to an underwriter, who is a person and not a computer, they will take a view on the information as a whole. Unfortunately we won\'t be able to help all of you but should cater for the majority.

Hope this makes things a little clearer. We like to think we have a bit more enthusiasm and experience of your vehicles than some.
We have schemes for MR2s, 300ZXs and others so talk to enthusiasts all of the time.

Keep the enquiries coming.

Regards,

Colin Tidd

would it make a differnce if you went for 3000 per year ( thats what i did last year and i think i did about 2200 )

guys,
i just spoke to ken @haughton - nice guy, v. helpful.
he asked me to clarify with you guys how to declare my motor in cc\'s...? apparently there\'s an equivalent cc used for rotaries that take their power into account?

mine\'s a 13b, any of you guys know what i should declare?

also, should i value the car at what i paid for it, or do you think it would be worth getting an independent valuation..?

any advise would be appreciated.

I think the general consensus among insurance is that its a 2.6

Mines taxed as a 1.3 and insured as a 2.6

Most insurance companies will only pay back the market value of the car ie if its worth £2000 then they will only pay back the £2000 and nothing more despite anywork done to it (and prolly less if they can get away with it).

You can get insurance that includes after market gadgets but obviously that will cost you more...

forget mods, trouble with mine is there is no book value... the insurance companies have no information about rx3s to speak of, so i either tell them what i paid (subject to their agreement that it\'s the right-ish value) or have it valued independantly. i\'m just not sure if it was significantly cheaper in aus than it would fetch here..
thanks for your input matt, and sorry to hijack the thread, shoulda started a new one really...
