Title: Gearbox/Driveshaft
Post by: Sean on August 25, 2004, 06:27:50 PM
Right ....... I\'m taking the gearbox out of this car that has no engine, - it would seem straight forward - now I\'ve taken the gearbox of the car;

Put a jack underneath it
Removed the mounting bolts
Lowered jack a little
Removed all wiring and shifter knob
Removed jack

Now I\'m left with a gearbox on the floor attached to a drive shaft that I can\'t f****ing get off:reallymad

How the hell do you get the damn propshaft off/out of the bloody box?

Yes Sean,
Just do as Michael said, pull it out and it should slide out,be careful though because a big pool of oil will come out of the box if you let the back end where the prop shaft was drop too low.
You ought to drain it,especially as you are sending it to Michael.
Kind regards
Carl.

Also be sure to pull the prop straight, one quick tug should release it.Pulling the prop at an angle or slow will damage the propshaft seal in the box.Very easy to do,have damaged a few in the past,Mazda only part.
Depends if you plan on replacing all the seals,if so it doesnt matter.

Yes mate it is/will be yours once its off the car!!!!!

I have already drained it. that should have been first on that list.

I\'ll try my best not to damage that seal (sounds expensive:eek: )

Well ........ That was fun!

Remind me to thank Grinder for talking me into this idea!

I wish I could just put up half the money and get half the profit for zero effort:mad:

(only joking mate, I\'m learning all the time, and it\'s actually quite fun to destroy a relatively rare car that a lot of people would give their right arm to own! :D )

Thanks for the tips guys! Because the box was already on the floor - and very heavy - I just carefully dropped the car back to the floor (making sure the box stayed clear underneath the car) let the park brake off, and very gently rolled the car backwards until the prop cleared the box, then just lifted the car again to pull the box out through the front! Easy when you know how I guess?!
