A few people will probably have heard already, but I blew up my engine at Donington on Saturday night. Well to put it correctly my friend Phil (who drifts the mean looking black S14a) done it and feels a bit guilty.
Dont think it likes being drifted!
Will get it sorted - hopefully sooner rather than later. A bit dissapointed at missing Trax though, its never going to be done inside 2 weeks.
Lee
It was the 7! I thought u were talking about the Nissan...........whos paying for it? I hope you had the verbal contract of \'u break it u pay for it\'
Shame there Lee,
I know "phatty" and hes a decent guy so hopefully you can sort the motor out soon?? Bit strange as you\'ve not long had it rebuilt???
Sorry buddy:(
Im paying for it. Phil didnt do anything I wouldnt of done - he just happened to be in the drivers seat at the time. It might be different if it went into a wall lol. I actually wanted him to drive it, but I think ive put him off taking other peoples cars out for a while.

Yeah there was something wrong with it. When drifting left handers it was missing and cutting out type of thing. No-one Ive spoken to yet seems to know what would cause this but it was bound to have been a part of its later blow. Need to try and work out what was wrong.
Was the engine run in?
Yeah. As mentioned above there was some sort of problem which I would expect led to it ultimately breaking.
blooming heck how many miles did you have on that poor soul?

Si
Sorry to hear that Lee, did you ever get it checked on a rolling road to see if it was running lean?

Is it still able to get fuel out of the tank instead of just air?
(might be a stupid idea, but trying to help. :) )

Fuel is the first thing everyone has said. I had about half a tank in at the time (enough to still drive it 160 miles home after). If this was the case, then Im sure it would have happened at other times and not just when drifting left handers.
Its been fine on the track when Ive not been drifting it and I dont pussy it around either. Dont really know what it was at the moment.
Still sounds like starvation. :(
Sorry to hear the news mate.

Yeah it does really. Any ideas as to what would cause it though. Something which would be specific to drifting a left hand bend?
fuel being forced up the filler neck leaving the pump with less to get at???
(Please tell me when I stop clutching at straws trying to be helpful and just start embarrasing myself.)
We are talking half a tanks worth a fuel. Presumably thats a lot to move around to avoid pick up?
I\'m sure I heard that 1/4 tank can be a problem on the higher power drag cars.
G force on drifting must be pretty high, but it does seem a little much.
Not sure where in the tank the pump is positioned, which would prob be an important factor
High power drag cars are pulling over 2g launches.
Drifting only pulls about 0.6g (which is a pretty constant rate on a slipping tyre im led to believe). I imagine you get more splosh around though if your flicking one way to the other. You would pull more G just cornering on a fast racing line and that wasnt a problem.
there are plenty of baffles in a Rx tank, to stop just that and with half a tank you would be hard pushed to take fuel away from the pump inlet. I very much doubt that drifting had anything to do to it. I wouldnt have thought that a drift would be much longer than a hard left hand sweeping bend but i\'m no expert. What set up do you have on your engine? and how many miles has it done?
no more ideas here then. sorry bud.
Hope someone that knows more than me can help or you manage to trace it soon.

Stock engine, Knightsport ECU, Decat, approx 2000 miles.
I wouldnt of thought drifting would be harder than a bend either. Theres a definate problem though, and its specific to drifting a left hand bend. This is the bit I dont get my head around.
When I say drifting we are not talking about a smidge of sideways action. We are talking about 1.5-2 turns of opposite lock being held round a bend.
Is the knightsport defo set up for yer decat not runnign lean etc etc & in what way has it blown you say you still mananged to drive 160miles after?
Si (answers will mean little to me

but thought i\'d ask)
At what stage do folks tend to run surge tanks erm stir thingies erm etc then?
Si (not sure if that\'s even the correct term but sounded vaguely familair...)

I dont know what the fueling is like. Its too much of a co-incidence to have the problem though and for that not the be the cause of the blow.
Its probably broken a tip. You can still drive them depending how bad it is, its just not that nice.
Blimey Lee real chocked to hear you have lost your engine :(
Whilst it sounds like starvation and I have had it through left handers and not right in the past, are you sure it was not free reving enough (where the tyres were spining ) to be fuel or boost cutting due to high revs ?
p.s. how much fuel did it take when you filled because although you saw 1/2 a tank FD fuel gauges arn\'t the most acurate in the world !
I take it the K/S ecu was plug and play or on it already, you didnt have it mapped. An ecu will be set up for certain mods, if any of these mods change the ecu should be remapped. (hope i\'m not teaching you to suck eggs). Also, if it is jap, their fuel is better so it should be readjusted for optimax.
You can buy special sponges that go in the fuel tank to stop fuel sloshing about but i think its more likely to be ecu issues.
Quotefuel being forced up the filler neck leaving the pump with less to get at???
left hander would not make fuel go in to the filler neck, its the wrong side...........
Ouch Lee, you\'ve not had much luck recently :(
Perhaps the fuel pump has been on it\'s way out and becoming less efficient. On left turns/drifts, the fuel surge might have been enough that the under-powered unit just was not pulling in enough fuel.
Tony,
Probably get a fair amount of force the other way actually due to the angle of the car? I dont know but I dont think it going up the filler is an issue lol.
Clive,
What do you mean because I dont understand about free revving enough? With regards to how much fuel, I still drove 160 miles back home on the same tank after so maybe thats a more accurate measure of the fuel lever. It was also the same tank I drove there on, about 320 miles total when the light came on and I put £20 quid in at Reigate Hill just to be sure I wouldnt run out. Wanted to get as close as home before topping up incase it wouldnt restart or something.
Lee
Wasn\'t bouncing off the limiter too much was it Lee? I\'d imagine it\'s quite easy to do this whilst drifting?
Max
Lee,
When I was drifting at Mobara in Japan, There was a long left hander leading on to the straight.
I had fuel supply problems. The car coughed and splttered a few times. Only when the tank was about 1/2. Early on the car had no probs.
R.I.P 13b :(
Russ.

No Max it didnt hit the limiter at all. We wernt totally brutal with it :p
Interesting comment Russ. At least someone else has experienced this then. So maybe I need to upgrade some fuel system although Im not sure where to start.
I\'ve heard of fuel starvation at 1/4 tank, didn\'t realise it could happen at 1/2 tank too???
I would have thought at 1/2 tank it should be ok.:(
silly question but is getting such good MPG (how da hell did you do that?) a sign of potentially running lean

?
Si
are you sure it was not free revving enough (where the tyres were spinning ) to be fuel or boost cutting due to high revs ?
Hi Lee, the above has now been answered,
l was trying to ask if the tyres were spinning where they had almost lost total adhesion due to drifting because it would then become almost like revving an engine out of gear and would be very easy to hit the rev limiter.
The same happens when you do a burn out preparing for drag racing, i.e. you need to control the revs to stop the engine hitting the rev limiter due to the tyres spinning so fast.
Sorry to hear that Lee,
With regard to the fueling issue, I\'ve had it happen in my Egi and in my old silvia. (On hard corners and dips egi, fast left with the silvia)
Was it happening on every left hander, or just on the complexes?
Also, was it doing it at the bottom of fast dips?
Baffels can only help so much in a fuel tank, I\'m unsure as to the shape of the FD tank and the positioning of the pump, but it sounds like a flaw in the design of the pick up if its always on the left.
So you drove it home on one rotor then?

Combination of already marginal fuelling plus some starvation from the fuel moving around the tank? The previous owner had the car on the RR at CPL, can Guy provide the AFR plot?
Kevin
Its seems to be pretty much any reasonable speed left hander, but only if you drift it.
Havnt been through fast dips as we only had a couple of the bends at Donington then we spun it round and went back the other way for display and not the entire track.
I drove home as it was as it was a night session anyway so at gone 10 I thought id get a clear run. Ended up in solid traffic on the M1 at midnight and didnt get in till 2. I think its a broken tip, so probably the 2nd rotor still does something? I dont know.
I wasnt in the AA or anything so didnt have much choice and I thought it would get home. My Drift Team already had two recovry trucks coming so I would of felt really bad needing one too. We managed to break 4 cars that night so it wasnt a good night mechanically (we dont normally have issues) though we all still had a good time.

I dont know, I only have the power graph. Can only assume that if there was an issue at the time it would of been looked at.
Very sorry to hear that. I know the feeling...
Hope you get it sorted soon...
Cheers
Donato
bugger. sorry dude. good luck getting it sorted.
Lee, being well and truely in the same boat as you, I sympathise, hope you get it sorted soon
Dave
Damn! That\'s unlucky and so soon after your rebuild. Hope the problem becomes apparent so it doesn\'t occur again.
My thoughts would be the fuel pump struggling to pump fuel under heavy cornering -- causing detonation. This occurs with some of the Bosch jobbies I believe too.
Mine should hopefully be back this weekend (fingers crossed) so hopefully you won\'t be far behind getting yours back. Such a shame as the funds could\'ve gone towards a new LSD and roll cage! (Isn\'t ya motor still under warrenty tho)??:(

Gutted for you Lee - not been the most rewarding period of FD ownership for you I guess. Glad you\'re going to stick with it though.
Still coming to trax or going to give it a miss now?

Im still going to Trax, Ive got 3 track sessions. If I cant sell them ill take the Nissan out rather than waste them I guess. Not sure yet but ill be there at least.
I never said I was sticking with it. Thats totally in the air at the moment. I said im getting it fixed...
I cant really decide what to do with it. The only thing thats definate is im going to carry on drifting. Have to weigh up my options car wise.
Sorry to hear Lee.
Should also check what fuel pump you have fitted.
I have driven cars with less fuel light on and plant my foot down going straight with no issues. But I also remember driving a one with a bosch 044 pump on around 1/3 of a tank left going straight and it would stutter & splutter. Put some juice in and it was fine. Some fuel pumps pull so hard that even with half a tank of gas on hard cornering starvation is possible.
rgds
I\'ll have a session or do you have to sell all three at once?
If so i will have all three :D
I will get back to you on the sessions. Would let them go individually but you do realise they are just open public sessions. I know some people didnt want to do them.
That fine mate, i think i am too late to book direct anyway. The only thing i am thinking about is the noise of my car.
Suprised you haven\'t tried any of this drifting lark Graham as your cars set up for drifting ain\'t it buddy???

slightly off topic but not far,
Can you tell me how drifting competions work? I dont know how one person is better than another.

At Silverstone theres 4 judges, and they mark out of 25 points (i think) for each of the 3 bends. Then theres extra points for linking it between the corners making it up to 100.
Only trouble is at the moment theres controversy about the judging decisions after every single round as its always a bit inconsistent - mainly because the judges over here dont really know what they are looking at (special guests racing drivers and stuff). Normally its obvious whose done the better runs and who should get into the next round though.
At the Drift UK events then once it goes to the top 4 you run head to head on track at the same time. The person behind has to try and keep up with the person in front matching their angle/speed (and passing if they car). Then positions are reversed and they run the course again to decide the winner. Again its normally pretty obvious who done better.
I\'m set to burst onto the drift scene next year, will be doing some intensive training in the off season.
If i use some cable ties to attach my video camera to my roll cage will i be allowed on the track (if i can get the sessions off Lee;) )
Not at Silverstone as they will check, but on some practice days and stuff it should be fine.
I badly need practice, hardly ever get any and it shows.
Lee is that the way they\'re doing it now didn\'t think it was like that in the UK yet? seen the vids of them doing that in USA & Japan but thought UK was still points based non close quarter stuff?

At Silverstone nothing close, but drift UK events are running full battle (and are supported by D1 corp Japan I think - Ken Nomura was there last time).
Vid of Phatty and Fredrick from there:

Theres only been one so far, at Birmingham wheels and it was Video\'d by V-Opt Japn for Option Video. So cool. You can read about it in the lastest issue of Jap Peformance.
Team Nightspirit went to Bruntingthorpe though as "Drift UK" to put on a demo, as the Drift UK guy is working pretty closely with us as the moment as the last event was mainly Nightspirit people.
There is another one in Birmingham coming up next month (I have free entry woo!), but it will probably be really busy now as the last one rocked so hard. Best UK drift event ever but not many people came along as it was dubios about it happening.
As said, they currently have backing from D1 Corp Japan to run Euro Drift series, and are after proper venues to sort some big things for next year.
Things are moving along with some pretty big momentum at the moment. Venues is still the main issue.
I have written too much lol.
can you post any more details for brum kinda stuff being local & all i\'d luv to come along......Any links of is it on the drifty site thing sumwhere? Always thought the UKD1 was a little not dull exactly but kinda boring surely even taking part on the same 3 corners again & again cant teach you all the different techniques particularly well.....?

Si (so wana get into it but dont fancy another 6 month rebuild....lol)
26th Sept is the next Birmingham Wheels event.
Silverstone isnt that great really and is getting a bit samey now. The track is just a power test really but hopefully we will have some new tracks next year.
Desperatly need a track with lots of twisties! Silverstone is like you say too much of a power track and doesn\'t work out well for the lesser bhp cars.
OK, had a proper read of this last night.
The internal baffles in the tank appear to break down/off over time, and I think anything older than about 5 years would suffer this problem.
Back to the main bit though. I still think it was starvation, with a bit of lean running in there as well.
Whenever you start playing at trackdays and such, you should be looking at adding a swirl pot, uprated pump and an FPR as the least done. This cuts down on the chances of getting this sort of thing happening. Doing it proplery would mean a foam filled tank, small (helper) pumps in each corner feeding an in-tank swirl pot. This then feeds two pumps going to each fuel rail.
If trying hard enough you would be able to get starvation on 3/4 tank. It\'s really not that hard to do.
Plus you say that you got another 160 miles out of the tank! This to me would mean that it was borderline lean on cruise, which I would take to be lean on boost.
The think to look out for when removing the engine, is look at the turbo pack. If it has been running lean, the headers will be cracked due to heat.
These are just my thoughts on it.
Fish
Thanks Fish.
Regarding the MPG it only works out at a little over 20mpg, and thats all motorway cruising (mostly sub 3000rpm, especially on the way home) so its not anything good mpg wise.
Will get the turbo thing looked at when its out. Sounds like thats a lot of work to make an FD reliable on track which is something for me to think about.
Lee
I guess that with drifting you would need to work on the cooling system all that bit more.
Higher temps like we would see on track, but without the air flow going though the radiator. Not good. :(
Fish
I was at Silverstone on sunday to watch round 4 of the drift comp.
Went along out of curiosity having only done trackdays upto now as I wanted to see what this drifting lark was all about.
Came away very impressed by the skill shown by some of the top drifters.Drifting through a series of corners looks very difficult and I guess it takes alot of practice to perfect, especially the transition between the drifts.
Not sure it\'s something I\'d want to put my RX-7 through though as it looks pretty brutal on the cars with lots of rev limiter action and piling into gravel traps.
tempted to hunt down a nice cheap 200sx to have a play with though:D

I would have said hello if I saw you! I had entered the RX7. Got it home at 2am and up again at 6.30 as I didnt know if I could transfer my entry. If not I was going to drive the 200SX anyway seeing as I paid. They let me transfer to the next round though.
200SX is obviously the car of choice, but you need to mod a couple of things. A lot of the S13s dont have diffs, so you really need to sort that (you can fit an S14 diff, but they are not so good). Standard suspension is like a boat, and if you have the leather seats you fly everywhere :D
People keep telling me to just forget the RX7 and kit out the S14, but id end up spending more on it than I paid for it and my hearts not in it at the moment.
Lee
Sorry I missed you Lee,I\'f I\'d seen your RX-7 I would have came over to say hello!!:wave
Those Isuzu Piazza\'s looked funny with there steamship bodyroll!
The 200sx seems to be the most popular car though with some long fast flowing drifts by some of the drivers. The transition from one drift to another does look very difficult and very easy to overcook.Practice, practice and more practice does seem the only way to get good at this game!!
Sorry to hear about your RX-7,I know excactly how you feel as my 3rotor 20B decided to go pop in a big way a few weeks back and that isn\'t going to be cheap to fix:eek:
James
Just to give u my opinion Lee. I had the same problem with my car. I had 1/2 tank left and got into a hard 90 degree left bend and as i acceleratet out of the corner i got a fuel cut. So i would say u had a fuel cut due to air in the fuel line. Cause as Fish said the baffels get worn down by the fuel.
Oh by the way Fredrik is a very good freind of mine :) And he\'s one hell of a drifter.
And he and i will be moving to england this fall :)
Sincerly
Jan-Tore Pedersen
Thanks!
I met Fredrik last time he came over for D1 at Silverstone and then the Birmingham event, as he spent a lot of time with the Nightspirit guys. Yes he is very good!
Will be good to see him coming over again for the next event, hopefully Ill have a car running by then. Im not sure at the moment.
