Post by: OllyJ on August 20, 2004, 09:20:02 PM
I\'ve got a 3rd gen rx7 type rz,and it\'s engine rebuild time:( .What i wanted to know is how much it\'s going to cost, ish, for a rebuild through an rx7 specialist, like dragon etc??Can I budget for about 2k or will i need a wee bit more??
 cheers.

look on dragons website, i think the cheapest is just over 2K but it all depends on what is reusable and what needs replacing, the other option is to get yourself a rebuild kit and do it yorself, and gain valuable knowledge at the same time.
If you can take the engine out yourself and send it to get rebuilt by a specialist it would save you a couple pennys.

cheers olly, actually,to be honest, its allready in bits at dragon! I bought the car from them in may, with a full warranty from them. The engine went in july and its been at dragon ever since. They took the engine out and stripped it for the warranty company to see the damage, and are now refusing to pay out.So the car has now been there for 2 months with engine in bits. It"s a bit enoying as i would have done it myself if i had known what would happen.I don\'t blame dragon as i think the\'re a bit stuck what to do with it.I think i might have to empty my penny jar!!:(

How can someone refuse to pay if it was under warrenty I dont understand? Is there more to  it?

I have yet to have had a warranty company pay out for a rebuild on an RX7.
I think that the warranties are a real waste of time and money, they allways site wear and tear for the failures no matter what we the builders try to tell them.
Kind regards
Carl

You could try RX-Heaven in west sussex (01403734666) for a re-con.
I think the price is somthing around what you have in mind and that also includes 3mm tip seals so you could crank up the boost!

If you do try them then you need to chat to Nigel.

have fun

Anyone heard any thing good about RX Heaven? Didnt Roundabouts 20B come from there? :(

Wasnt some one sounding like they had a sick motor on another thread the other day that was recently rebuilt by them?

If you want cheap take it to Tim/RX Motors - he\'s much nearer Ross and has probably built more engines in the UK than the rest of them put together!

3mm tips - why? how much boost do you want?! :rollin

And having just checked your profile - your name is? Are you some thing to do with RX Heaven?

no i\'m nothing to do with rx heaven.i actually work for a suzuki dealer in sunny devon:rollin .One question though,i\'ve got a knight sports ecu,if i decided to rebuild myself, would i need to get the ecu re-mapped or checked for fueling? Also who is a good person to get a rebulid kit off,and how much would it cost? I\'m not really sure how extensive rebulid to go for.I do know that the engine has just suffered from wear and tear and has no cracked rotors, they are just worn.Would i still need to change the rotor housing??
  Cheers for your help.

OlyJ that was aimed at Rotary RX7.

Knightsports are not programable, Knightsports offer a small range of ecu\'s to suit the build of there engines. So you wont be able to change the spec of the engine or turbos and boost, to much.

Sorry matey - meant Rotary Rex 7, not u dude :)

One question though,i\'ve got a knight sports ecu,if i decided to rebuild myself, would i need to get the ecu re-mapped or checked for fueling?
To be honest the unprogrammable \'chipped\' ecu\'s like the KS 4beat that you have, the RE-A Redoms and so on are not that great a prospect over here. If you keep the 4beat on the car I\'d suggest making sure you have a fairly restrictive exhaust in place in order to keep things safe - and check what boost its setup to run - you\'ll be gutted if you have it rebuilt/rebuild it yerself and then it pops a couple of weeks later...

Also who is a good person to get a rebuild kit off, and how much would it cost? I\'m not really sure how extensive rebulid to go for.I do know that the engine has just suffered from wear and tear and has no cracked rotors, they are just worn.Would i still need to change the rotor housing??
If you intend to do mods use as many new parts as you can afford/bare to so u have a good high compression block to start with - and of course port it :)

If on the other hand you just want to get it back up and running then u should be able to reuse quite a bit e.g. rotor housings, side housings - might just get away with a gasket kit and a few other bits may be...

As for parts, in the UK try the usual builders; Pip up north (//www.wgtautodevelopments.co.uk), Tim in Dorset (//www.rxmotors.co.uk), Geff in Pompey (//www.reworx.com), Carl in Newbury (//www.mazdarotary.co.uk) or Ross in Exeter (//www.dragonperformance.co.uk); Tim probably gets the best deal from mazda in the uk I\'d guess as he must buy a truck load! Try him for hounsings if u want them especially. Geff gets the majority of his engine bits from japan as is cheap as he sells quite a bit to Tim and vice versa. Or you could try getting a kit from Rotary Aviation in the US...basically ring the main engine builders as they will get stuff the cheapest I guess...

thanks for your help guys, hopefully will get it back on the road in the next couple of weeks:D .Cant wait as i am driving my suzuki jeep around at the moment and its driving me up the wall! Thanks for the contacts,as I\'m fairly new in the rotory world, ive been driving gto\'s up til now.I found there nowhere near as much fun.And about the ecu,i just wanted to make sure to be on the safe side, although am now a bit worried about the exhaust it has on it.I think it has a super dragger system on it cat backwards.?
cheers Oliver.

If its just the catback then u should be fine - as long as the ecu isnt programmed for crazy boost :)

If you have the stock cat in place and/or downpipe or airbox you should be good to rock. Get your self a cheapo boost gauge or borrow some ones just to check you\'re not seeing too much boost - if you have a fairly restrictive exhaust i.e. stock or catback then boost should well under a bar and not much to worry about - yay! :)
