I got my REX back from having a new clutch fitted yesterday. The bite is all good, but the new noise is slightly disconcerting. There is a noise like filing metal from under the gear stick in the canal somewhere. A grinding sort of noise. I did meet a guy who worked for Webber Cats last night who has done engine management stuff for the RX-7 and rotary engines in general and recons its normal for an RX-7 race clutch to sound like this fir a short while after fitting - especially if the flywheel has been re-profiled (machined: which they always should be on high power applications apparantly) whilst the two bed into one another. Can anyone offer their opinion who has had a clutch in their REX changed?
Many thanks :wave
had 2 new clutches and never heard filling. Some twin plates rattle, take it back and ask there opinion, and go back again if after say 500 miles its not any better.
Yeah so which clutch is it we\'re talking about here? (http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/cwm/cwm/uhoh3.gif)
Si
The bloke who fitted it couldnt remember the make and had already thrown the box away. Its a 3 part clutch kit tho from Japan cost about £250 trade price. Thats all I can tell ya at the moment. :(
3 piece just means its a kit with a friction plate, cover plate and release bearing. Does the noise go away when you put your foot on the clutch ? When does it make the noise exactly ?
It makes a noise which is definately audibal when the clutch is de-ressed. When you press the clutch it fades away almost completely (just about hear a whirring still), then when you put her in gear and pull away, the noise comes back with avengence. Loud and increasing in tone with the lift of the revs.
for that money it is def not a twin plate or anything elaborate. It is more than likely just a single , stock clutch replacement. It sounds to me like the thrust bearings have not been replaced. Really should be done of every clutch change needed or not at the time.
Thrust bearings!?! Sounds important. Will it be okay without new thrust bearings, especially when driven properly (fast! ;) ?
A short while ago I had a bearing that was making an awful noise, had planned to replace the clutch and the barings soon anyway. All of a sudden the noise has stopped for no reason. Whos to say how long it could last? If it is that?
I guess its something that you will have to try. I worst happens you will end up replacing the bearings, which is clutch out job, hence why I say for the small amount of extra cost do them when clutch is out already. Your guy fitting should I feel have asked or explained.
Twin plate will rattle when pressing clutch otherwise silent, if the clutch is making noise when not pressed i suggest you go back and get it checked out???
I went back and as suggested its the bearings. Terrible really they didnt offer to replace them when the clutch was done, cos now I have to pay to have the clutch removed again to sort the problem. Thanks for your help guys, spot on as usual! :)
