A new feature for 2021 – RX2 of the week. For week 1 – a 1970 coupé.

Week 2/2021 US spec 1971 coupé
Keep 'em coming :great:
Loving that green one. I had a Ford (sorry, but's out there now ;)) Escort Mexico Mk 2 back in the 80's in a very similar bright green :)
Not my car, just same model....
Green Ford? Well, I can't throw the first stone... :))

Lovely, keep them coming :icon_thumleft:
Good Thread :bravo_2:
Thanks! I think I have one for each week in 2021. We'll see. :)
In 1972 the Rx2 Super deluxe coupé was the priciest Mazda available in Norway.
These were the Mazda prices of October that year:
(//)
Amazing RX-2 build from PRO Touring fabrication
Mazda rx2 , billet quad rotor PP, twin turbo. Handmade rear quarter s, door skins, turret... The list goes on and on.
They even rolled the rear wing from sheet!
Ok, thats really awesome

Impressive. I like those real gills in the series two bonnet! Wonder what they'd charge for rolling me a set of standard spec rear wings. Probably cheaper than NOS. At least if these from Phil's rotaries down under give any indication: A neat 12,500 Australian Dollars (or best offer)
(//)
:great:
Oh, yes! :great:
If only the mass produced them like that!
If you have a spare 65K floating aroundd ;)

Calendar says week 4 only starts today, so next Rx2 will have to wait. Instead presenting a 1972 616 coupé. This car was sold on an auction in New Zealand last year.
:great:
This week we have a 13B-converted US spec 1971 coupé
Real nice in white :great:
Not normally that keen on red cars, but that 616 coupé looks stunning. :love4:
Is that a genuine Mazda colour, you think? Looks quite a bit brighter than Sunset Red (and I think that one was launched a bit later).
I think your right the red looks very red
:13:
Thanks! That is just amazing! "Earth Green" and "Flare Yellow" were real classics! Some of these were continued. I remember the showroom in 1977 had a 929 in Earth Green. We were supposed to have a bright blue 616 (colour not in this chart), but there was a long wait for a blue car, so my dad settled for "Sunrise Red". It faded very quickly, unfortunately.
Curious that there's only one orange colour, though. I think there were at least three available (bright, peach and burnt) but perhaps they weren't available in the UK?
I can only remember seeing one orange over here when I worked doing pre-delivery inspections.
I used to work from a tick list checking things, like every nut and bolt on the chassis!.
We also used to strip all the Japanese Dunlops off the cars as they came in, because the rubber was so hard it was dangerous on our roads,
Thanks, Clive this is fascinating! Another question is how the VIN-numbering on the Rx-2 worked. I can't seem to make sense of it.
As far as I can find out, a total of 225,688 cars were built, but if we add the info I found on production per year:
1970 4,242
1971 63,389
1972 58,433
1973 54,962
1974 7,656
1975 5,960
1976 553
1977 253
1978 240
...that puts the total at: 195,688 (exactly 30.000 less)
The model was sold in Norway from 1971 through 1974. When I look at the register, most 1971 series I cars have 5-digit VIN numbers.
Mine is a late series one (built, probably around June 1972) and it has a six-digit number starting with 12****. The latest car I have tracked is a 1974-model, VIN 218447. This all seems logical, but there are some irregularities. Of course, our equivalent to the DVLA bases Model year on the date of registration. Still, there must be some deviance from the straight count from 00001 to 225,688 (or should that be 195,688?) Or perhaps not? :icon_scratch:
RX8 Club has all the answers: https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-media-news-11/mazda-rotary-production-number-history-169856/ (https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-media-news-11/mazda-rotary-production-number-history-169856/)
My numbers for 1970 were 30,000 short:
That should give the following VIN-numbers per year of production:
1970 34,242 00001–34,242
1971 63,389 34,243–97,631
1972 58,433 97,632–156,064
1973 54,962 156,065–211,026
1974 7,656 211,027–218,682
1975 5,960 218,683–224,642
1976 553 224,643–225,195
1977 253 225,196–225,448
1978 240 225,449–225,688
Of course, production year (PY) and model year (MY) don't overlap. According to automobile industry logic, 1971 MY begins in October 1970, etc.
So without info on monthly production figures, it's impossible to determine the exact numbers of series I spec, series II spec cars, etc.
Other puzzling things about these numbers: Why did they continue to build Rx2s in such low numbers throughout 1978? And what about the RX4/Luce production figures stretching into 1990?
For week 6: A Danish four-door Super Deluxe from 1971. Love those mudflaps! :love4:
Nice :icon_thumleft:
There's something about a model from the 70s that has a nice set of flaps !

Week 7. Another 1971 four-door. This time French. Oh, la vache! Quelle voiture!
(the bonnet is series II and the radiator grille is 616, but never mind)
A lovely example. Looks in extremely good condition for its age :icon_thumleft:
Came across some older pics of the same car. Someone gave it some TLC before it went on sale (again?), by the looks of it. Another quirk: it's got amber-coloured reversing lights! ???
Week 8. We stay in France and in 1971. Red Coupé project car with its wheels stuck (according to the ad)
Looks to be in reasonable condition. Is someone working on it, to bring it back on the road?
I found the ad back in December 2016. The car appeared to sell back then, but no idea where it went or what happened to it. As for last week's orange four-door, it appears to have its own youtube-channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/favarer93/videos (https://www.youtube.com/user/favarer93/videos)

That's my car :13:
Welcome, Kevin! :welcome:
That means two Rx2 project cars on the forum!
Btw, you were right about those amber reversing lights. Not easy to see on the pic, but the red French coupé above has them, and so has next week's Rx2 of the week: a French classic rally car. So hold on to those lenses! They are seriously rare!
Right, then. Week 9 approaching. Again, we stay in the land of amber reversing lights. This red series I coupé is made famous by driver Serge Garosi in classic rallies of recent years, not least the Rallye Monte Carlo Historique. A real gem. And it looks really handsome going sideways in the snow, too.
Excellent pictures, thank you.
Indeed, a great set of pictures :icon_thumleft:
Thanks! And thanks for sorting the site out, Casey! :sign0098:
See the Garosi Rx2 fly past 4 mins into this video:
For week 10 we have a dark green Japanese 4-door from 1971. Ad from January last year and asking price was 3,850,000 yen.
:love4: :icon_thumleft:
Week 11 coming up. We're probably gonna stay in 1971 until mid summer. This time we have another Japanese original spec car, a Capella Rotary Coupé, as they were called back home. That shade of orange was not available in Europe, but seems to have been on the Japanese domestic market. Stunning car with original-looking aircon. And it's a Sport, so it probably has the handling kit available only in Japan. Btw it's still up for sale here: https://kuruma-ex.jp/usedcar/detail/ccVU3179477575 (https://kuruma-ex.jp/usedcar/detail/ccVU3179477575)
Looks stunning :icon_thumleft:
Tomorrow we enter Week 12. This time we have another Japanese Capella Rotary Coupé, but in a more compact format (1/24).
Week 13 brings us back to the U.S. to a pale yellow 1971 coupé.

Absolutely! Saturn Yellow, paint code YC, I guess, judging from the colour chart Clive posted above.
For week 14 – a blue metallic US-spec 1971 coupé. A very nice job. The positioning the wing and c-post badges is a bit creative, though. Need an example to follow, see last week's saturn yellow car.
For week 15 we have a bunch of left-over bits and bobs. Various 1971-models in various states of (dis)repair. Enjoy!
Week 16... Well, it just has to be a 616 week, doesn't it? My dad's green 71 can start it off. The RE(!)-registered white car has a bit of a sinister history. It was a rental car involved in a Mossad hit gone wrong in Lillehammer!
:13: :13:
Week 17. We head back to 20 August 1971 for these pics of a rally rigged coupé. Working on finding out who the driver is. Adding a shot of a brand new Rx2 interior. © Frits Solvang, Dextra photo (Creative Commons License)
Last week's rally driver is a young Tore H. Bratlie, who enjoyed quite a bit of success driving Simcas later in the 1970s. He also raced NSUs.
Inspired by his rally-rigged Rx2, for week 18 we return to some more pics of Serge Garosi's historic rally car:
Bathurst 1971 – back when they fitted proper wheels on their cars down under. ;)
For week 20 it's time to start looking at Norwegian Rx2s. There are 12-14 cars in the country, most of them coupés, some on the road, some in storage or under restoration. This car was one out of no less than three orange 1971 coupés that changed hands last year. The ad came up the week after I bought mine. This car has been restored very nicely and has, like mine, been converted to the series 2 grille and headlamps. The new owner is looking for a complete original drivers seat (that is LHD, of course), any condition as long as its repairable. If you know of one, I can put you in touch.
That is gorgeous - in superb looking condition :icon_thumleft:
Yup 100% agree

Week 21: A very beautifully restored 1971 coupé. It's just got its paint adjusted very recently. The owner has joined the forum, too. He's building an original spec 12A twin dizzy for the car. Top picture is taken before the restoration started.
Very nice :great:
Most Rx2 imported to Norway were coupés, but in 1971 a handful of sedans were imported as well. This beautifully restored one changed hands a couple of years ago. It was still up for sale when I took these photos. The car was converted to the later four-headlamp grille and series 2 bonnet, but still has a 12A twin dizzy beneath it.
Some beautiful cars in fabulous condition :love4:
Week 23. The third orange Rx2 coupé that sold last year. When these pictures were taken it was still exhibited in a car museum. Was restored by its original owner before it went into that car collection.
Still love an RX-2 2 door someone's very lucky
Forgot the videos! This week's car sold from the museum to a dealer, who put these two clips on YT:
For the upcoming Week 24 – the second surviving 4-door Rx2 in Norway. Also a 1971 like the one shown above, but with something a bit more powerful under the bonnet.
Week 25. Some Norwegian (ice) racing history. The Rx-2 in the pictures was originally a standard car that belonged to the Mazda importer's wife. It was later converted into a race car. In the 2010s it was restored and prepared as a historic race car. Unfortunately, it since sold out of the country and is now somewhere down on the continent.
Wonderful pictures, thank you.
Here's a nice example
Oh, yes! That Australian car auctioned by Shannons! Very nice with that white interior!
Been so busy in the garage, almost forgot Rx-2 of the week column for week 26. This time some advertising pics and a lovely, Saturn Yellow Japanese Coupé. Next week we go racing at Fuji, so stay tuned!
For the 1971 Fuji saloon car race, "Rotary Brother" Yoshimi Katayama entered his green Rx2. He came 3rd in difficult conditions and gave the Nissan GTRs something to think about.
And look at the starts of those 12A-powered marvels (go to 6 mins 30 sec if you're in a hurry):
The car for week 28 - a mildly modified 1972 coupe- just sold from Gateway Classics in Orlando the other day. Asking price $33000.
Ooooo I do like that, the price not so much.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Nice, but that steering wheel covering is bugging me!
The car for Week 29 has a chassis number three digits higher than mine. It probably rolled off the assembly line on the same day and came to Norway in the same batch of cars. The owner has kept the original headlamps, but done some very stylish mods (just look at that tank lid - a massive improvement!) and it runs a 13B turbo. And that colour... changed from the original Sunrise Red - good choice!
Oh, my what a great looking car, plus what looks like a tidy RX-4 along side.
Would look good alongside Clive's yellow RX-4 :13:
Three digits down on the VIN-numbers for Week 30. Some old pictures of mine, taken well before my ownership. Glad those slot mag and whatnot wheels are long gone!
Week 31. A 1972 616 coupé and it's currently for sale!
https://www.finn.no/car/used/ad.html?finnkode=226663192 (https://www.finn.no/car/used/ad.html?finnkode=226663192)
Supposed to be running and ok for rust. Roughly £6000
Week 32: This nice Flare Yellow 1972 Coupé was out for sale down under back in 2018. Some work needed. Wonder if someone has sorted it by now...
Stop Press! Breaking News! Newsflash! Whatever! This immaculate four-door just showed up on YT, posted by a NZ auction house. Check out that interior! :love4: Wonder what's the story behind those Russian license plates. Hopefully just for showing off. Car comes from NY via Europe, it says.
It's
Blue Rx2 Video Theme Week. Others on this site will be more proficient in Spanish, but I got that the host opens by mistakenly calling it an Rx-3 and is corrected by the owner. It is not a noisy brapper, and the engine appears to be the original from the factory. Lovely car! :love4: Enjoy!
For Week 34: A 1972 race-rigged coupé.
Wow, I really like that A LOT :great:
Yup thats well built and presentable to as race cars go :great:
Week 35. A 1972 coupé in that lovely dark green (Cosmic Green?). This car sold on the auction site Bring A Trailer last year. Bids went through the roof, but apparently the car needed more work than it looked like... Well, that's classic cars for you. ;)
Ah, and there were videos, too: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1973-mazda-rx-2-4 (https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1973-mazda-rx-2-4)
For Week 36 this hidden treasure: A Saturn yellow 1972 coupé advertised for sale in Philadelphia a few years back.
Week 37 is four-door week. A red Portuguese 72 sedan and carious US specimens.
Two 1972 project cars for Week 38.
For Week 39 this fast 1971 coupé just popped up on YT:
Theme for Week 40 is 1972 + white + a bit of work. What's worse: the Australian custom of putting on gold-plated 22" Simmonds rims with the rubber painted on them, or the American "laddered" wheels? The second car below at least wears its mesh wheels with some dignity. There's always something attractive about a rusty, but unmolested barn find.
Would love to find an RX-2 like this to convert to a racer :)
That would be really cool Clive :great:
Why not? It can be done very tastefully:

For upcoming Week 41 we hava a modified 72 coupé in a nice metallic blue. Looks like a lot has been invested in this one. Badge placing a bit on the creative side, perhaps. ;)
That looks awesome, and a lovely shade of blue too :love4:
I'm still not a fan of the oversized wheels though :nono:
For upcoming Week 42 – an olive green metallic 1972 coupé with white interior.
This Norwegian modified 1972 coupé popped up in a sales ad late one evening last week. Ad had disappeared in time for breakfast next morning, so either it sold very quickly or the owner had second thoughts. A professional but unfinished build left in the garage for too many years, it has an upgraded suspension, escort steering rack and a bolted-in cage. The ad mentioned a full interior in leather as well. Let's hope we can see Week 43's Rx2 out on the roads again soon!
I would say it just sold real fast ;)
Let's hope a rotary engine is going back in there :)
Good chance of that. Car was advertised with a ported 13B and five-speed box.
Week 44 and a blue metallic project that was advertised for sale in the US in 2018. New owner's first challenge would be to find a new rear window. It has the intermediate upgrade US bumpers. Not seen very often, they are not completely unattractive, but certainly no improvement on the originals. A bit too Karmann Ghia, perhaps? :D
Racing pics for Week 45. Competing in Class B (1,3 - 2 liter class), the Rx-2s came second and third in class and 13th and 14th overall in the 1972 500 mile race at Bathurst.
More racing. This, the 46th week of 2021, we present the 1972 Fuji Masters 250, won by a certain T. Masuda in the blue Rx-2 number 32 (what a rhyme!), who brilliantly outsmarted GT-Rs and Rx-3s alike. A special prize (in hard kudos) is offered for anyone who can inform us of Mr Masuda's first name!
No idea how you find these pictures but well done
Oh, just ordinary black magic, that. :P
Top one by googling "1972 Fuji Masters 250" the rest are screenshots from the YT-vid. :))
Even tho I am big fan of rotarys, I would love to get one of those Skylines. That Hakosuka Skyline sounds awesome

This week's Rx2 pic takes the infamous big-wheel-mod styling a bit too far, so adding a video of a beautiful, white Japanese spec 1971 coupé for the sake of balance.
For Week 48 we turn to the 1973 model year. Not that many 1973-models of the Rx2 in Norway, but this one is a gem. When the pics werte taken it was for sale (I got there too late, unfortunately). Back then it needed a bit of TLC. The car sold again this year, apparently. It has a 13B turbo – nice to see such a modest tailpipe on it, considering what's under the hood. A real "sleeper" in a stunning colour.
You may not have many, but every one seems to be a winner :great:
I love that

Another 1973 Coupé with a 13B. (Hey, that's a rhyme!). This one was for sale in the US last November.
This stunning flare yellow 1973 coupé was for sale in Denmark back in 2017 (yes, Malcolm, more yellow!) Asking price was a reasonable €18,000. Hope it went to a good home.
Oh my that is so nice :P
Very, very nice, and Clive's fav colour too :icon_thumleft:

Lots of action involving Rx2s at Bathurst in 1973, where they came 1st and 2nd in class C and 10th and 12th overall. Not everybody reached the finish line, though...
And on Karisumasu Eve, this LHD (!!) 13B-converted 1972 coupé pops up. For a mere £46,000.
RE-imported from the US (see Rx2 of Week 28!) and Gateway Classics in Orlando, it has now travelled back to Japan.

A bit delayed, but here we go. A gold metallic coupé to start off
Rx2 of the Week 2022!
For Week 2 of 2022 this red 1973 coupé. California car imported to Australia. It came up for sale in October last year. 48K AUD asking price. Hmmm... Glad I don't have to pay that amount to sort that rear window out, otherwise looks like an unspoilt car with a lot of potential.
For Week 3 a bouquet of 1973 coupé project cars. The black one Canadian, the grey from Florida. Yellow car not complete, but looks great. Red is the only runner by the looks of it. These all come from ads published during 2016-18. Notice what's parked next to the grey one, Clive? :love4:
Yep, for the upcoming week it's Dutch Rx2/616s. Trying to get hold of the Hadi Mazda Club here in the Netherlands. Been looking a bit on the net and spotted a nice Earth Green 616 coupé series IV, one red series II coupé and one equally red Rx2 sedan:
US 1973 Coupé for Week 5. Florida car ready to go.
Ok. Admitted. Nice car, but a bit stingy for an Rx2 of the week feature. So here's a bonus feature:
Week 6. Some sadder cases. All 1973MY. The green fourdoor was rolled in a music video and on sale as scrap.
Wrecking an Rx2 in a music video?!? In 2017?!? :'( :'( :'( Brain drain or too big a budget!
The rest more or less salvageable, depending on your wallet, I guess. The grayish one is an automatic. Interior still looks nice.
O' Dear that's real sad, I shall now have nightmares
:( :( :( very sad photos!
This black 1971 coupé is currently up for sale in NZ:

Not as funny as it sounds. Once upon a time I used to work for people whose job it was to disguise the ravages of the journey on new Japanese car imports. Very few of them arrived without damage or rust after their long sea voyage with little or no protection from the sea air. We often had to swap brightwork that had begun to rust en route. These were Hondas but Mazda cars must have come the same way and the shipping was expensive so corners had to be cut to make the retail price point. UK buyers would have been horrified to know their new pride and joy had already had a 'glass out' respray to repair rot that had started in the A-post even before delivery.
On the assumption that the RX2 boot shut line is key I was going to say one...no idea what the tell is elsewhere :D

I'm not at all surprised to be honest. Making cars for your own market is a very different animal to suppling product overseas.
We realise this with our own work.
Back in the day the realisation of this was probably a lot less or the processes not put in place to combat issues.
For relatively small car companies these needed measures were a huge on cost.
Still, it kept you employed at the time

Thanks, Jinx: that's an important part of the story. Add to that how Mazda were "saving" on paint back i the day. Quite a few vulnerable surfaces on the Rx2, such as where bonnet hinges meet the bonnet (and where the boot lid meets the hinges) never saw factory paint. For this reason there were instances when the bonnet came loose at speed because of rust in the bonnet mountings!
Back to the pic:
Of the 9 cars on the photo, 2 have their rear doors clearly visible. That leaves 7. The sedan air vents are on the front of the C-pillar, near the gutter, whereas the coupé has two vents either side of the rear window. That is certain identification of one more sedan and two coupés.
3 sedans and 2 coupés so far, then. And the 4 remaining ones? Look at the angle of the front windscreens - that should leave only one car unidentified. ;)
For the upcoming week, a modified 1973 coupé of a shade somewhere in between Jamie's and Clive's chosen favourites
Suddenly started craving some Coleman's mustard with my bangers and mash... ;)
Whoops, I forgot it was Monday! So not much happening down in this corner of the forum. Well for this week we have a nice collection of Rx2 race cars.
Week 13 is here. Matt black and modified.
This immaculate 1973 sedan showed up first in NYC, then it travelled to Europe, before ending up down under. Hopefully no Simmonds wheels will ever get near it!
Wow not sure I have ever seen one quite that factory
A Puerto Rican 73 coupé in that stunning blue metallic for week 15 and as a special easter holiday treat: the famous C&D rx2 Race Car.
Happy easter everybody! :occasion14:
Good post, didn't realise that the Car and Driver RX-2 still existed. :great:
Great photos - wishing you a Happy Easter too :icon_thumleft:
Whoops! Forgot it was Monday yesterday. We like our Easter hols in Norway, and that includes a second Easter day. So Tuesday is this week's Monday. This week's Rx2 is a 1973 Coupe that was up for sale on Evil Bay a few years back. Looked really good apart from one detail: the owner had hacked away the slam panel to fit an oversize aluminum rad. I mentioned this on a message to the seller, and the picture magically disappeared. I can only assume the same didn't happen to the damage! ::)
Anyway, apart from the Frankenstein style surgery, a lovely car in a stunning colour. Enjoy!
Week 17. Herschel Orange 1973 coupé.
Green 73 Coupé US-spec. Nicely restored. Came up for sale a few years ago with a blown engine. Somebody got a bit over-excited, perhaps...
More 1973 coupé. This time in Herschel Orange:
Just what you want to discover when you lift that tarpaulin:
-a lot of work! ;)
I would go for it though :great:
2 x olive green metallic 1973 Coupés for week 21!
Sorry about the soundtrack for this week's entry. One almost expects to see a monster truck ad! ::)
Looks like it's all about quick bucks: no time to fix the faulty rear lamp wiring. BUT: a lovely 1973 coupé all the same.
Thank you, that's so nice.
You're welcome! ;D
What a clean engine bay :love4:
Love the olive green one too - different, but I like it :13:
Rx2 otw has gone on holiday. Back in a few weeks.
Leave you with the slogan on the side window of this 73 coupé:
"No valves/ No pistons/ No problem" :)
Bouncing off of the picture above, here's one of the RX-8 launch day we attended at Sheffield in 2003

Here's one you can buy! Series IV 616 neatly converted to 12A and 5-speed box. Looks good, too, at "half price" of an original.

This week, a candy red 73 coupé
An a bonus post! 1974 616 sedan for sale (£ 1,500). Admittedly, it has rolled on its roof some time during its life, and had the roof changed. You can see the weld on the C-pillar in the pics. But car has done less than 30K miles! See the ad at: https://www.finn.no/car/used/ad.html?finnkode=263534330 (https://www.finn.no/car/used/ad.html?finnkode=263534330)
Anyone up for a rat-look Rx2 clone project?
I got all excited there, clicked on it hoping it was a two door :-[
Tough chance. In Norway only half as many 616 coupés have survived compared to Rx2 coupés. :'(
Sorry! Promise to issue a NOT COUPÈ warning next time, Clive. ;)

Yellow 73 sedan for some variation. Those stick-on read plastic spoilers. Wonder what speed was needed for them to have any effect. Probably made the handling even worse somewhere above 100 mph :))
Advertised for USD 2,300 back in 2018. Not a bad price!
A red 73 Coupé for this July Monday morning. Red with white interior! Someone has used a can opener on the roof at some point, otherwise looks in good nick. Wonder what's happened to it since the ad came out five years ago. A steal back then at $ 12,000!
A white 73 Coupe to cool you down in the heat wave. Just don't think about the sales price of $14K back in 2018!
And stay hydrated! :occasion14:
What do retired F1 world champions do for a living? Well, in the case of 1980 champion Alan Jones, the answer is: Peddling Mazda Rx2s! :D
US spec 1973 Coupé in yellow. Probably another 13B turbo conversion, judging from that "discreet" tailpipe. And something funny about the trimless rear window. Asking price $17,000 back in 2018...
Very nice, colour helps :great:
A modified 1973 coupé in Earth Green for second week of August:
In late 2016 this 73 Coupé showed up on the US west coast. Minus engine for $ 3,500. Hopefully it made it through the forest fires...
I'm sure you will know.
Plastic Bonnet ??
Never thought about that, but you might be right. Well spotted. The steel series 2 bonnet should have a slightly slimmer and more pronounced center line.
More project cars. We're getting close to the end of 1973, so this is the dregs. But saved a little gem for next week... ;)
Very nice 1971 616 sedan for sale in Oulo, Northern Finland for € 8K

By 1970 people in the Nordics were desperate for someone to save them from the British car industry. Toyota, Mazda, Datsun and Honda rushed to the rescue. In 1967 japanese cars were a novelty in Norway. The jokes were many and pretty bad. But by 1971, Mazda importer Kolberg Motors went number one on the new car sales stats. After that, the jokes stopped. Of course, the Swedes had Volvo and Saab for self defense, but Japanese cars sold well in Denmark and Finland as well.

Well no one could be worse than British leyland..... when you hear stories of factory workers purposely damaging cars on the production line so they could come back during overtime to rectify..... I'm not surprised it all fell over

Haha, don't get me started. My dad bought a brand new Vauxhall Viva HA in 1964. Fast forward past all the traumas: in 1971 he bought his first Japanese car, a Mazda 616. He never looked back. ;)
Three more 1973 coupé's in various states of repair covering the price range from US$ 9500 to top-of-the-range Australian price £ 40K (all back in 2016)
We have reached the end of the 1973 picture file and I promised you a treat. This winged* Coupé is stored somewhere in Norway, waiting for restoration. Clive: it's a two door, so let me know when you win that lottery! ;)
*No, you can't see the wing in the pic, unfortunately, it's a tall one in the XR3 Turbo style. Was shown some old photos from when it made the roads unsafe...

Oh, the things you're missing when you don't come by this thread regularly! ;)
Today a 1974 GSII. It was recently for sale from a NZ dealer. The asking price started somewhere in the outer stratosphere, then came down somewhat. It has to be said it's a real gem. :love4:
BTW: it's strange how the 1974 MY saw the Series IV introduced in some countries and not in others. We had the series III 616s until October 1975. My dad's series IV was a 1977 model, built in December 1976. And it still stood out amongst the series IIs and IIIs. I do prefer my series 1,5 over a series 4, but that combo of olive green metallic and green interior is just stunning!

Gorgeous, stunning looking car :13:
Another 74 coupé. Modified with a 13B turbo it sold from South Africa to Australia last year. Note it has the series IV rear panel and lamps, but the series III front.
Stunning metallic blue colour on this week's coupé. Not sure I'll "dream on" about that interior, but car looks in great nick otherwise.

New week, new Rx2 (or 616) post. We have now reached the 1975-folder. This nice 616 sedan is a daily driver in the Far North.
This 1972 sedan beauty just showed up for sale in NZ: see here (https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/mazda/other/listing/3847772055?bof=am98Lt0H)

Where were we? Oh, yes – 1975:
This good-looking 1975 616 Coupé shows up on some car meet photos from a few years back. Current whereabouts unknown. Looks like it's got the series IV-style interior and dashboard.
Lovely pics, keep 'em coming :13:
Wow! Never thought I'd get to see this: On the Hazure-san channel a lovely, Herschel Orange 1971 Rx-2 Coupé! It has been neatly brought back from a state of silly bodywork mods. Interesting rear wheelarches (wonder where they're from?). But above all: What a sound!!! :13:
The plan was to present the Herschel Orange Rx-2 sedan from the Frey collection this week. But they had put it in the basement :nono: , so we'll have to do with their 1976 Earth Green 616 instead. A Belgian car that was never sold, it has only 98 km on the clock! It also comes with a very swish black vinyl interior.
Please keep them coming, so enjoying the pictures.
Loving the pics!
Yellow 73 coupé? Oh, yes! :great:
A "1975" 616 coupé recently advertised for sale in Poland. Still a Series III body on this one. And a series I/series II dash. So how 1975 is it really?
Something rare & unusual this week – a 1975 618 sedan:
And HAPPY NEW YEAR, btw. :occasion14:
:happyny:
Sticking with the "Old Age of Rotary" until further notice. Dazzling colour on this 75. Pity about the wheels:

Another 1975, but a Series III this time. Nice tan interior and the series IV style dash.
More 1975 series III and IV mishmash on this stylish sedan. This one has the Series III front and the series IV dash, series III (or II) seats (no, wait! built-in headrests?!?) and series IV rear lamps:
This week we're talking rare as hens' teeth: An immaculate South African-spec 1976 618 Coupé!

Introducing Leon, a stunning Rx2 race car from Down Under:
Noriaki wants a set of those Rebel wheels, too. Finding a set can prove tricky, though...
Getting to the bottom of the pile of pics. We're in the 1976-78 folder already.
A late 616 coupé somewhere in Norway. Lovely colour. And converted to early Rx-2 rear lamps – a good idea, perhaps, but without the right panel it just won't look right...
I do like an RX-2, thanks for keep posting these :great:
On, no! The photo folders are all emptied! Can't promise weekly pics any longer, but this thread is still not dead:
You're welcome, Clive. Here's another one in your colour:
Here's another I found.

:sign0098:
Did you know that two herschel orange Rx2 coupés participated in the 1972 Rallye Monte Carlo? And both entries were from Norway - at the time spmething of a developing country when it came to motorsports.
The two entries were car no. 79 (DA44475) Per M. Eckholdt / Erik Sandberg and car no. 87 (DA25313) Gunnar Ringerike / Arne Dahl. The second pic shows the service vehicle in the background, also an Rx2 coupé (with a roof rack). None of them got to the finish, but that could be said of the vast majority of that year's entries. It was a snowy winter in '72.
Sadly, both cars were de-registered way before the digital age and seem to have been lost without trace. Rally cars led a hard life.
My Rx2 rallying research has given a few more results. Enough for a little vid ;) :
The 1972 Rally Monte Carlo. More details on the Norwegian Rx-2 entries! (as well as the R100 entered for the 1971 rally). This time complete with names and faces. 🏁
Introducing an R100 kitten to see what it does to my YT viewing stats. :))
Vid descriptionBefore the oil crisis, Rotaries were presented as The Cars of the Future, as these samples from Norwegian Press 1969-73 show. Mazda became our most-selling car make in 1971, giving it plenty of press. The 51 R100s that arrived, were not marketed, but acted as a rotary-engined test batch. The Rx-2 featured in many ads and tests.
Motoring journalists praised the Rx2 for its smooth, silent engine, precise gearbox and running gear. The only drawbacks noted were the light switch placed on the steering column (!) and the front seats clicking back to an uncomfortable position every time someone accessed the back seat. I subscribe to the latter.
Notably, Norwegian testers did not share their Danish colleagues' criticism of the Rx2's handling (see my previous video "The Mazda Rx2 – An Unlikely Rally Car?"). In autumn 1971, Mazda dealership Ullern Bil gave journalist Dan Hasle an original spec Rx-2 Coupé to participate in an all-BMW (!) driving course at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Hasle claimed to have maxed out at 220 kph towards the end of the Döttinger Höhe straight! (His Danish colleagues were scared off the loud pedal at 180kph on the Jyllandsring track).
Mazda's speedometers were known for their precision (showing 102 kph at 100), but Rx2 speedos are marked only to 210. This questions the accuracy of Hasle's claim. Still, I'd like to know where the rev counter pointed as he overrode the speed needle!
Denmark's honours were restored when the Danish-Norwegian team of Finn Ryhl-Andersen and Arne B. Dahl won the International Journalists' Rally in an Rx2 (see 1:21').

This, on the other hand, is a 1974 US-spec with portable picnic tables front and rear: :D
Handy tables those :))
So many great looking cars ended up with these terrible things to make them comply !!
This table is a bit lower... :D
Might have to buy myself another Rx2... ;)

More pics of the 1972 Stainless Rx-2 appeared. Built to celebrate the the 200,000th Rotary Engine. This was hidden at the end of a weird 30-minute video, so stills will do:
That silver interior :love4: ...
Wow wow, words fail me :great:

How they used to look in the 80s
Some light rigs are set up for fog, some for illuminating the roadsides. This seems to be searching for hostile airplanes...
You don't see those much these days!
Anorak fact: The Rx2 door cards and door pulls changed from October 1971. This is how they looked before and after. Old design first (and top).
Anorak on...... ;D

Wow! That looks factory fresh :great:
Wonder who's the lucky new owner of this beauty. Happy easter, folks!

Never has the world seen nicer picnic tables than in 1975! :D
A 73 in a very rare and flattering silver met and with white interior.
We have a new RX-2 that's now arrived in England that will hopefully be out and about in a couple of months.
Don't know much about it other than its got a bridge port
Very nice, congrats UK! :sign0098:
That looks like a 1974 series 3. It has the late rear lamps and, I assume, the late or intermediate dash.
With RX-7 1st Gen S2 wheels by the looks of it!
Oh no! It's grown a hipster beard! 😱

Now that's where a proper beard ought to be! And always better without a split in the middle! ;)
