Title: Advice needed on a noisey rear end
Post by: Mr Spiller on December 08, 2019, 10:57:35 AM
I ha e already posted this on RX8OC
And Mr Boosted had also advised to pretty much check everything mainly wheel bearings and diff or possibly diff mounts which is a fair shout as when I jack the rear up on the diff there is a fair bit of movement
Here goes if anyone else has any advice

Morning all
the last 2 maybe 3 trackdays I've done I'm hearing a horrible wurring noise whilst cornering .The best way to explain would be that on cornering its like in continually driving over rumble strips on the curbs. It sounds similar to a having a cracked rear disc which I don't have .other possibilities could be noisey diff or wheel bearings . it is quite difficult trying to explain the noise and cant really do a road test to show someone more experienced. Then , last night a few buds up and eureka …… . listen to see if the go pro picks it up . Thankfully it does , very well .So volume up please and advice on what it could be ?

thanks
Wayne

Never know an RX-8 Rear hub bearing die but it was, I have always found the when you are cornering on a bearing that's bad the noise normally stops.

I have stripped may RX-8 diffs over the last few years and also found the lsd part of the diff had failed and that was before I used them in the race car. I bit the bullet and fitted a Kazz diff 3 years ago and never had any issues.

Unlikely, but is it possibly just some rubber marbles on your tyres that are flailing about and making contact with the wheel arch on cornering G's? Had something similar on my car a few times with soft semi-slicks.

Starting from the top , diff mounts are a bit shot, well rather shot to pieces

Change to super pro and see the outcome me thinks

That’s the near side which was much worse . I put the tyres on a balancing machine and there was about 5 mm tops of movement from centre line . Ideally could do with putting them on someone road car to try them

Rims are new
Tyres were bought used so that could be the problem , won’t be buying used again for sure

I. Cheated a bit as its just a track car
Probably saved 2 milligram of weight lol
It was tight undoing the side mount bolts but we managed . Just dropped the zorst  of the rear mounts and job done
Not sure if it works but the mounts were much stifferer

Took the car for a few laps to local circuit landow  yesterday .
First session I thought we had fixed it but the circuit was damp so quite a lot of sliding around .
Second time out , with a drying circuit and able to lean in more on the car and the noise was back .
Strange that the sound seem to come from the drivers side this time , I thought it was passenger side last time - probably wrong mind ..........
It was on high right hand bends again .
Maybe try wheel bearings next ? Not sure

Normally with a wheel bearing as you lean on it in a corner the noise will disapear.
