OK,
Lets' try something new, as you will see it can be Rotary or just anything you find amusing.
First one is an excellent Rotary Video, second one is a non PC Rotary video that which could never happen these days and the third a Steven Segal advert a friend sent today which I found hilarious

Love the new thread Clive, there is one problem ......
.... Inviting me to post threads that amuse me with my dark and sick sense of humour is very very dangerous.
I will endeavour to keep it family friendly
Took the s off to see if it helped. Can’t tell if it works on my phone.
Funny clip regardless, and car related.
“Oh I shouldn’t let her do that dear, it gives them ideas “
A very well presented and sorted Group C FB hillclimb car.
Looking at the FB's on Sunday, theyre teeny tiny! No wonder they go well .
Wish I could get my heavyweight monster down to 940 kilo , and and and had that sequential box!!!
Hey Clive, yeah, a sequential box is a real nice to have, but this video tops it.
WARNING: its not a rotary! but the in-car footage is to be admired.
Its a 2 litre VW touring car block with a Suzuki Huyabusa head (WTF?) in a 700Kg Golf.
Paddle shift....... he keeps his floor planted in the upchanges, the system must kill the ignition for a split second.
On the down changes, you can hear it auto blipping the throttle. Doesn't even need the clutch.
If it wasn't for the necessity of pulling away, I would think he could saw his left leg off, hes not using it.
Really admire the engineering and technology and all makes up for really quick times, and allowing (richer) lesser talented drivers to mix it with the big boys. Surely it must remove some of the "driving experience"
Lunchtime shenanigans ..............

What if its a link from FB ?
As far as I'm aware, the only way to link with a screenshot is to find the original video on youtube (if it exists on there, which 90% of the time it will). I did this for one of Clive's posts up above, changing the FB link for a YTube one. Takes a bit more time and googling skills though and may not be worth the effort. Limitation of the forum software I'm afraid.
OK no stress, just thought id ask the IT guru ! :icon_thumleft:

OK, this one is not so much about the video, but about the telemetry.
Any one know what he was using to get his times and MPH
Probably going to be stupid expensive, but it would be great to see this on the video's Philip kindly constructs for me.

This looks like the same system
Yeah the demon tweeks page is the updated version from the google image which is the DL1
Well done Jamie, hmmmmm cheaper than I thought but still a lump of money that could maybe go into making the car quicker .
Not sure what it means by credits though / Pay as you go sim card ?
I think it uses sim card tech to send the signal from your car to "something" for your "pit crew" (Lisa) to monitor your driving performance
Harrys lap time is an app among many you put on your phone..uses gps etc an then you can also connect into the obd port for revs temps etc.
Have a chat with Philip im sure he has the skills.
But the basic 1s show mileage and gs and the circuit...but you have to record with your phone.
Caseys got 1 like that think.
Sent from my SM-N950F using Tapatalk
RaceChrono App for Android phones records a fair amount of data, even in the free version I use. It continuously records speeds around the circuit and allows for lap comparisons by overlaying speed/position graphs. There is a paid version which has more features, but I've never tried it.
It's basic compared to full telemetry systems, but a useful post-lap analysis to see where time can be gained/lost - and it's free.
Harry's lap timer looks even better, but I've never used it.
If you don't like this, you have no Rotary Soul
May be of interest to look as it's a good video of my RX-4 engine re-fresh

That goes really well, there’s some driver influence involved in that tho lol.
Those rear lights on the elan, ugh. So glad I got rid of mine, and body roll...... it nearly clipped the wing mirror .... on the floor !!!
His positioning is much to be desired....
Well I won’t drive mine like that, and if mine handles as bad as that, I’m going back to motorbikes.
Oh btw, Jon the father in law is steering away from his hill climb addiction and considering a track day car. I have an old friend getting rid of a cortina based Locost 7 rep and my cousin has a renesis engine and gearbox collecting dust..... even tho jon is talking about hayabusa power

So, I’m really confused so forgive my lack of knowledge.....

Black flagged for overtaking in a corner!!!! Guy was indicating and i thought going into pits....but so many people there no idea what there doing....Elan....and the white BMW got in my way all day.
Cars good the coilovers are on max hard but still some rubbing...too much front camber ive destroyed half the r888rs and other half ok. Ive warped a disc or 2 lol that was the noise on breaking...but its got potential...
Not a bad buy at £1500.

I don’t think he would pay the asking price, he wants something cheaper for entry level and to be fair, given his current driving ability it wouldn’t be used to its full potential.
This Locost is unfinished, hasn’t been worked on in over 10 years and the owner wants room for a triumph gt6.
I welded the chassis up 15 years ago after the owner tacked the pieces together.
It needs some minor changes as it’s a bit heavy. Like swap the steel floor for an ally one.

That last vid you posted you got a few good empty laps before mr white bmw ruined things.
Going well even considering you had “ballast†and a dodgy moment near the grass on 1st chicane. I honestly thought it was a grass cutting moment.... well held.
Noticeable that warped disc on the camera after a few laps lolll
Got your first flying lap at 1.24.....

I know it’s 10 secs off your best but given the weight difference......
...... I’d be happy with 1.24 when I see my first track day.
In hindsight I'd be happy to complete a lap on my first run. Lol

Cheers mate yep few cheap tweeks i reckon i can cut 2 seconds off easy...new std wishbones on front which come with x3 new bushes as theyre worn on current set up...sort juddering on brakes with new discs pads all round so can brake later better feel.

That white bmw was well pi

ing me off all day and well the Elan driver was too but not so much.
I did have a great day mind...with only 1 track day and 1 session under my belt all year i was gagging to get on track...the civic gives me breathing space to sell the Westy and finally decide what im gonna do with 7...i just dont think i can drive with the same "gusto" i used too. The yellow one just before that made him feel funny!
Got to be one of the best saves I have seen :great:
Some know this already but this video shows how dominant RX-7 FB's were in the 80's.
I was privileged enough to watch these cars at Brands on open un-silenced exhausts, a sound that still lives with me :love4:
A little more info on the impact the FB made on what is now the BRSCC,
You will hear that they were deemed as 2300cc and why the engines were not allowed as 1152cc.
Due to the dominance of these cars, they were effectively banned for 1981 as a ruling was brought in to say the manufacturer must have a four door equivalent available of the two door car they would be racing.
This got rid of the RX-7 overnight !
Lastly as a foot note, as we all know the UK/European RX-7 FB was powered by a 12A "however" they were actually running 13B engines (which came out in 1974)
They were just faked up as 12A's ::)
Below is a picture I took at Brands when one of the cars came up for auction when the TWR empire collapsed.
LOL nice story at the end from Win
Yep, what a story at the end ;D Can you imagine returning to your car in the car park and finding most of it missing ???

Years ago I was racing a Vauxhall Chevette with an english axle under the back at Lydden Hill and broke a half shaft in practice .
A mate who drove down to watch the racing let me strip his Escort road car for the day to get me out there racing, unlike the RX-7 at least he knew I was borrowing it for the day :)

Few thoughts on this one, why Mazda is using "really old car" for a mule..?
-new RX-9 chassis is similar to 8s, so they can test their patented new front end. As seen in R3, it is more advansed than old one is.
-new rotary engine is tested, cause they propably have prototypes allready. Also, hydrogen Renny could be on tests again
-new inline engine is tested, cause they have done lots of work with their new engines. New engines are awesome, so I could suspect that they could bring new NA and/or turbo engine. I reckon they could sell rx-9 with high powered fourbanger. Allthou it wouldnt be RX then
-remember, Mazdas current CEO is visionary, it could be anything

Lähetetty minun G8141 laitteesta Tapatalkilla
Hmmm, it could be to do with the floor pan rather than the clothes on top.
I remember seeing an interview with a Mazda boss who said they had invested a lot of money into the pan of the RX-8 / MX-5 NC floor pan they would use it for years to come.
I suppose much like the Audi / VW pan with the Golf / TT ect pan.
Thats also true. I didnt think that far

I have a suspicion if you're pasting directly and I can't find a mod already in production that works, I may have to roll a custom solution. But yeah man it's doable

Found another video from Race 1 at donnington
You will see me appear (at 9m45s), then disappear away from Josh later in the race as I started 23rd and finished 7th setting fastest lap of the race along the way.
My question is can anyone identify the white lap timer on his dash. It could be useful in qualifying.
(still cant get the youtube picture thing to work!) - fixed that for you - Malcolm ;)
Clive its a Mobile phone

i took a screen shot and zoomed in..
Its gonna be a circuit app like Harrys lap timer.
Ideally need an old mobile phone..pay as you sim..a decent phone holder and away you go.
All circuits are mapped in the apps and via gps will do lap times.

There is few timer apps, that uses phones gps. However phones gps are usually so slow that you need external thing for accurate times.
I use RaceChrono app
Lähetetty minun G8141 laitteesta Tapatalkilla
Yep, I use the RaceChrono App (free version) on my Android phone. Comparing the laptimes it records against video shows it's pretty accurate (better than 10th of a second I'd say). It works reliably in my RX-8 tucked away in the centre console cubby hole. You cab set up speed traps around the track and record at split times for several sections of the track.
https://racechrono.com/
It also gives a recording of speeds around the circuit too, but I'm not sure how accurate that is.

I remember years ago Jim (Lenny Karloff) had an ap that did loads of things Lap time G etc etc

Great build but I shudder to think what this cost, !
http://www.speedhunters.com/2016/11/awd-4-rotor-fd3s-sema/
(Edited Jinx's post by mistake , whoops :-[)
I think that's the 2016 version with a dummy 4 rotor engine in. The project is several years old. By 2019 it has a billet 4 rotor (from NZ) and actually works, though had outgrown its front bodywork. He took a lot of flak by pushing it in to the exhibition hall (again) this year and waited some time before posting a video of it working - all four wheels being driven while it sat on axle stands. The truck to take it to SEMA was reversing up to the door before they managed to get to that point, the original deadline already some hours in the past. There are links to the build story on the 1320 You Tube page. He seems an unusual chap but it was genuinely interesting to watch it come together.
To make it worse he also has/had 'ordinary' RX7's with three and four rotor engines. Strangely, I still quite liked him! :)
Thanks for the update, as I said, I shudder to think what this cost

I sent on your message jarno, she laughed and said you need stronger glasses :th_smiley-typing:
I think what jarno is trying to say is the throttle pedal needs to be set back from the other pedals at rest so when applying brake the pedals are flush with each other so a flat foot can be dipped to right to blip da throttle.
Id start for now appyling brake with your big toe.
Sent from my SM-N950F using Tapatalk
Ahh gotcha..... that may be an issue as the top of the throttle pedal is only 10mm away from the headers and I need to lay up some grp to go in between yet and cover up the hole.
I think some more playing with the ergonomics are required.
It’s makes more sense now as the technique I was using meant trying to dislocate my right hip to the point I thought, this is too painful I’ll skip doing heel n toe.
More repositioning.......

Found this last night, Glenn, the guy who is making a fine job driving set up MRC with me originally :great:
Clive
I remember having a few quick laps with Glenn on the day : what gearbox is he using in there ? 2nd gear around them corners at speed is quite unusual unlless he’s got a 4 or 3.8 diff which I’ve never heard of in an RX8
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
He has a close ratio FD box in the car, fine once its underway as 1st gear is far too high for an RX-8.
The cost is also a bit prohibitive as it cost 3K
He originally bought it for his FD but never fitted it.
p.s. I slowed down so he could follow me for a couple of laps ;)

..... I never tire of Andy Duffin's 20b 7.
Rumour has it that this track "Leadfoot" is actually Andys front drive leading up to his house.
I dont know how true it is and cant be bothered to google it. However, of it is true, imagine the fun on the commute back home from work.
At least someone can have fun outside

Some good saves, some great and several you would never have bet on. Some old favourites but the last one - new to me - surreal. ^-^
You wouldnt do that with a RWD car at Paddock Hill!
The Indy car 360 spin was all the more impressive as Dario Franchitti still won the Indy 500 afterwards :great:
great vid! never like to see race cars smashed up. :13:
Great collection of "saves" :icon_thumleft:. I vividly remember the Jason Plato save on Paddock Hill - I was watching that live on TV at the time.

It’s only 4 episodes in and latest one posted this morning

Wow, not only a huge build but also huge money, pull rod front suspension is trick.
Shudder to think about the money already in it with that gear box and even CCM (carbon) brakes etc !
Found this from Castle Combe last year, odd seeing the race from inside someone else's car. Great to see the car from the outside. Should be faster next time there with the different gearing and tyres

Pleased you enjoyed it.
I enjoyed the race because it became tactical, at times I worked out where to overtake backmarkers so he couldn't get me. He was quicker of the chicane because of my gearing, but now I will have just that little more acceleration due to going to the 4.3 over the 4.1 diff.
BTW no it was the car below that did a silly in the 2nd race
Exciting watching that video - a good race :13:
I think that was the weekend I met Clive n Jon?
Good race!
That bag of paper clips car carries some corner speed.
He nearly took out that 206 on the first left handed kink after the start /finish
I chuckled when the other 206 driver had ash bruneau down the left side and Clive down the right, or so it looked 😆😆
Well definately wide awake now. May as well do a bit, good entertainment captain 👍
Thanks Guys, yes that's the weekend you had the misfortune to actually meet us Jamie :angryfire:.
Ash admitted to me on the podium that he thought his number was up with the 206 he only just missed ???.
Those Cleo things only weigh as much as a paper bags, power to weight n all that ;)
He was very good over Avonrise! That takes balls to carry that speed over an unsighted crest.
I dont brake i lift and ive tried not too but my right foot always does!
Looked like grp doors and bonnet too as it was all flopping about.
Rx8 with its suicide doors both have tobe substantial to maintain integrity...maybe something Steve can look at to reduce weight...right in the middle of the car too..
Weld in a b pillar with latch for main door and skin the void...but that makes battery and fuel pump ackward for access...nah...more boost!! Lol

The 1966 Familia Coupé deserved an L10A, too:
I know I have an eye for detail, but am I the only one who falls in love with how the frenched aluminium headlight shroud flows nicely into the grille at the bottom?
These are cars that were designed by people who had passion, design flare, individuality and a pencil and paper. Not this modern world of how all cars look the same.
Agree! That's a very good example. The first Familia shared italian design influences with the Luce 1500/1800, but the attention to details continued. Just take door handle design as an example! Nice, chunky, chrome-plated metal, not the plastic kitchen-cupboard handles we are served in the 21st century. Model specific designs, just look at the Rx4/929! The Mx5 NA famously has the last state-of-the-art Mazda doorhandles.
Now thats a work of art :great:

Toe curlingly awful...but very nostalgic.
Nice to see the 'temporary' scaffolding grandstands still in place at Brands - built that year for the Grand Prix. Can't remember how many years they stayed there for! ;D You could stand down at ground level (still above the track) in front of them if you were poor - 'protected' by a picket fence. Shocking absence of Hi-Viz protection for marshals throughout of course - can't imagine how anybody spotted them running (or in some cases ambling) across the track to sort things out instead of, as now, obliged to summon a safety car. Anybody wondering about the minimal run off area at Paddock Bend at Brands Hatch would be horrified to know it was positively massive compared to that offered at Crystal Palace - which was also thoughtfully lined with railways sleepers!
A fine collection of forgotten names on screen: Rochdale, Diva, Fairthorpe, Elva and Turner et al, plus two Ferraris (250 and 330?) on the front row of a club race at Castle Combe with nobody too interested in their investment value. The bloke towing his mini racer with a Triumph Spitfire must have been an optimist although maybe the bonnet bulge suggested he had already swapped to a six cylinder engine long before the factory did it for the GT6
I was at that BOAC 500 the Chaparral won - it was a fantastic thing but saddled with an automatic gearbox, which often let it down. We would not have waited for the prize giving, Phil Hill or no Phil Hill. Our Dad was always impatient to get home and never really endorsed the circuit racing notion of the fastest cars starting at the front, as opposed to the back like in stock car racing in a stadium. Bah Humbug!

I had to google "RX-7 GTU" as I'd not heard of that one. Seems it's very rare. No-one seems to know how many were made, but rumoured to be less than 100?
A few more were made, I think. According to Marc Cranswick's book, the GTU was introduced in 1988 as a "formalised" US version of the RX7 Sport. The name was to commemorate Rx7 success in the GTU race series. The GTU was "a light atmo car with the good rim/tyre/brake pack." It wasn't marketed very well, though, and sold only 2000 units in 1989 and another 400 in 1990 (Cranswick, p. 138). So this one will be one of the roughly 400 1990 cars.
That GTU model were made to celebrate Mazdas domination at IMSA GTO and GTU classes with RX-7s.
If you are not familiar with Mazdas sussecs at IMSA, long story short, they were really good. RX-7s were so good at these races, that even today, they arr more succesfull than even Porsche 911
Those Limited GTU roadcars, I think 2000 were made. And they are abit wanted, even tho its not that special. Basically, only stickers makes it special

If I remeber correctly, only few colors were available at those models. White, black and red. Most of them are white.
And there has been some not original GTUs on market, forgerys basically

Jarno, do you know if this was one of the genuine works cars that were built in Belgium and if so can you contact the owner ?
I had a phone call from someone asking what the original car colour was. He believed it was Dover White but he is trying to confirm ??.

Yes, Minna's car was genuine works car!

MRTR0005, so its quite early one too.
If i remember correctly, this car was first to came to Scandinavia and first one to private driver
When Minna sold that car, it went to Belgium, and has been there since. To my knowledge, with same owner thru these years
However, there has been several works cars in Belgium, and several replicas, thru these years
Unfortunately, I dont know how to contact that owner. I do know that he is really private, and not so many knows that he has that car

Wonderful car but it, struggles on turn in though and looks like it needs a stiffer bar on the back plus stiffer rear springs.
I have always loved outside video's and pictures as these sometimes show what a driver cannot feel.
Look at last year when Malcolm's pictures showed why my front splitter was no good, I would not have know from the drivers seat,

Is it just me that thought this rather blithely ignored any and all rotary racing success that preceded the LM victory? The narrative appeared to be that Mazda were also rans everywhere, which must surely have annoyed the people who had been winning SCCA trophies with the SA22/FB for a while by then? Previous racing history was 'covered' with one image of an R-100 and I'm not sure it was entirely fair to dismiss the R100's 4th 5th and 6th places at the 1970 Nurburgring 6 Hours as: "not even finishing on the podium." ;D
I dare say Takayoshi Ohashi the team boss of Mazdaspeed would be surprised to hear that Jacky Ickx was the team manager (He was hired as a 'consultant') who secured them the weight penalty exemption. (I just looked that up, which they could have too?) I suppose Jacky Ickx made a better story, though it did not sound like the presenter expected anybody to have heard of him on account of only having won the race six times. ;D
It really is a great 'under dog' story that does not need the background airbrushed out make it more dramatic.
Well said, jinx!
Indeed! Jinx for president!
Whilst this mere mortal has no reason to dispute such comprehensive evidence, for you have been blessed with witnessing our own natural satellite orbit this god forsaken rock longer than I .....
( I couldn't think of a more diplomatic way of saying you're older and wiser)
But, I would revel in such delight, seeing same said information posted on the video channel and watch the authors squirm in their half hearted attempt to broadcast a piece which is believed to be economic with the facts. Also every keyboard warrior who claim to be a "team manager" because their cousin ( who all share the same parents and banjo) has a hybrid turbocharged Vauxhall corsa in a lock up behind some flats.
......... just a request lol

Well said above.
Also the LM predecessors to the 787B are woefully overlooked also there is the misconception that the Rotary was banned after the famous win.
To be curate 1991 was the last year that it was viable to win outright due to a coming rule change rather than an outright ban on the Rotary
I went to Le Manns in 1988 and there was a 4 Rotor racing under the guise of Jim Downing who was possibly the most winning Mazda driver turned constructor ever.
Just look at the huge variety of Mazda and Rotary powered cars on the link at the bottom

From rotary show in LA last weekend. R100s, Rx2, 3s, REPUs. Some very nice cars!

Not unlike the roads up here, although our reindeer don't jump about quite as much. Heading north with the Rx2 and making good speed, I pulled out and passed a car in front of me that suddenly slowed. Very stupid. Of course, it was slowing for a reason. Missed the reindeer's shank by a few inches. Quite literally a hairy moment...
Reindeers only weigh up to about 70-80 kgs, but you don't want to hit them at 60 miles an hour. At that speed, an elk will take the roof of a 70s classic clean off (including your head if you don't dive under the dash in time). There's one more good reason to Always Respect Wildlife!

So!
Despite popular belief, ok scrub that, I know i can be somewhat controversial, but not trying to be controversial here.
Neither am i trying to upset the applecart, there is definately a place in this world for huge brakes, racing applications for instance, because well, 0.5 a sec longer on the throttle can make a difference in getting to the apex first. Obviously in conjunction with sticky rubber.
However, one of the reasons i didnt opt for fancy suspension and brakes on my Rotus project is.....Mazda have spent ££££ on R&D and testing to 1, make cars pass legislation, 2 make cars safe. But if its not broken, why fix it. Use there R&D and buy off the shelf parts that just.....well .... work!
Not trying to put wilwood or AP out of business..... like I ever could lol
This video I found very very interesting. I wouldnt say I 100% agree with everything, but there are some interesting statistics and facts that make you think......... hmmmmmmm, maybe I should spend my hard earned on different parts of the car first.
One thing i would reccomend is using subtitles, as he has a strong accent.
I would welcome further comments.
Well, I suppose it makes sense that bigger disc brakes in principle don't stop you more efficiently.
Bigger discs can cope with more heat, though. If overheating brakes are an issue, you are probably racing at a high level and at pretty high speeds. So for most of us, I guess big brakes either serve:
a) purely cosmetic purposes
b) account-emptying purposes
c) both of the above
:D

Yeah lol
But the bit about the video games I don't 100% agree with.
Somehow I don't think Wayne or Clive put big brakes on their race cars coz they been playing gran tourismo 5 on the PlayStation lol

"Without a run up" - talk about damned by faint praise. They make it sound as though Mazda wandered in to Le Mans because they fancied a go at it and had nothing else on that weekend. :))
Does this explain something, I wonder? (https://translate.google.com/?sl=en&tl=no&text=festival%20of%20speed&op=translate) :dontknow:
I do find it a wee bit annoying that the LM win gets treated like a happy accident. Yes, all the other stuff that might have taken the result DID fall over or break down but the 787 ran fault free for the whole time and that is why it won - not Mazda's first attempt and the last year it would have been possible due to rule changes. Of course Mazda have only won it once but then so have Aston Martin and nobody suggests that was a fluke do they. 8)
Unique car of the show maybe, but so many nicer cars there. its a bit cringe, but if it drums up some positive publicity im game.

Behold you Mazda fans of so little faith. It's a Mazda Chantez. Mazda planned it as a rotary-powered kei class mini-rocket, but Japanese authorities banned the idea. So it came with a 360cc piston engine. Mazda were so insulted, they left the kei cars market until the arrival of the Autozam AZ-1. In the 1980s, privateers converted a Chantez to 13B power and track tested it to 240 kph! Don't know if the one in the video is the exact same car, but if not, it's inspired by it. ;)

Deffo happy with 2, its power vs weight.
If you can argue the 1.3 or 2.6 capacity (those piston boys dont like it) from a 2 rotor ....

In the early 70s Norwegian Mazda importer Kolberg Motors commissioned photographer Frits Solvang (b. 1941) to do some promotional shots. Mazda was just becoming the most-selling car make in the country (1971) and Solvang, with his experience from the National Theatre, would have been top choice at the time. Cars featured are Mazda 1200/Familia, 1500/Luce, 616/Capella, 818/Familia, and of course the 1971 top model Rx-2 Super Deluxe Coupe. The final three pictures feature a rally-rigged Rx-2 with reg no 36-95-04. The driver in those pictures is probably Tore H. Bratlie. That very same car was entered for the 1971 RAC Rally by another Norwegian rally legend, Kjell Gudim. More about this soon (I hope)!
