Title: Exhaust wrap, potentially good idea or not?
Post by: scooby_si on August 17, 2004, 06:09:41 PM
Seems to be a group buy on the go on scoobynet & just wondered what folks thought about potentially using this on FD/rotary exhausts whether it be downpipe &/or the mid section kinda thing on in my case a decat?

No point in the mid section as they\'re used to try and keep high temperatures out of the engine bay.

Down side can be that if you get moisture in to the blanket, expect to be replacing the covered part sooner ratehr than later.

After two minutes with the engine running there wont be any moisture on a wrapped downpipe. :cool

The reason I raised this is that else where they have removed wrap from turbo\'ed cars t find the headers have effectively corroded away.

I think the key thing is that is has to be done well with no gaps for moisture to creep in when the engine is cold/off.

what you have to remember though is you are increasing the heat that your silencers will see + increasing the metal temps on your manifold/downpipe so it will be more prone to cracking. Not to say it will crack, just that fatigue limit and strength of the material drops off as you increase the temps.

The advantage is that stopping the exhaust gasses from cooling down so quickly increases the flow slightly. + it can stop you from melting stuff around the wrapped area.
