Hi guys,
I'm restoring an old FC NA that I picked up cheap on eBay last year, I'm still in the process of stripping out the engine for a rebuild, and I'm hoping that I leave out some of the emissions stuff and that awful looking reactor / manifold when I put her back together.
I've done a search but can't really find an answer, and a lot of info relates to the American version whereas our UK version seems to use an older emissions and ignition system.
From what I understand, I don't need a cat as it obviously never came with one, but I do need to pass my idle emissions test, so my question is, providing the engine is running well, can it pass this test with an aftermarket manifold and no air pump chucking extra oxygen into the manifold?
There's ways and means of ensuring a emissions pass if required, run the tank low and dope the remaining fuel with a little ethanol being one. However if you ask around there's normally a friendly MOT tester who'll use a degree of common sense in most area's. I'm not sure where your based in East Yorks but I know of a couple in the Selby Doncaster area, don't expect any favours on the rest of the test though.
Go aftermarket ECU and it's even easier and merely a case of altering the fuel trim for the test.
Thanks for the quick reply!
I do actually have a somewhat friendly MOT tester who would probably ensure that it passed emissions wise, but I'd rather not have to rely that if I can.
I was thinking of stand alone, but I have plenty going on just to rebuild the car in standard form. (Although luckily no real rust found so far) so I think I'd rather get the car running and driving and then go megasquirt down the line.
I'll post up a build thread in a bit if people are interested in that kind of thing?
Unless things have changed, I'm sure you will find the car is basically emissions (pre-1991)exempt with just a rev to make sure it does not produce clouds of smoke because the car does not physically have a cat fitted anyway.
Any MOT station will confirm.
All this means you can dump the reactor and pump :great:
Great stuff!
It looks like the anti-afterburn valve has already been removed and capped off in the past, but taking the pump off should mean I can remove a load of piping from the engine bay and tidy things up a little.
From what I'm reading in the manuals I can find, I think the UK cars 6 port actuation system is activated by intake manifold vacuum so shouldn't be affected by the air pump removal.
If your concerned about it passing then just install a high flow car, prett certain you will have no worries passing then. It won't rob you of any power, or anything noticeable

I'll try without one first, given the engine has no lamda sensor, I can't imagine a cat lasting very long, the American one has extra air pumped in with the air pump, which of course I'm hopefully deleting.
Second question, does anyone run without the heat shield? The things an eyesore haha.

If you mean the manifold and your fitting a tube manifold then your OK without a heat shield, I ran an EGI like this 20 years ago.
Thanks.
