Title: Tjp8 rx7 build thread
Post by: Tjp8 on May 25, 2017, 07:51:29 PM
Hello everyone.

Bought this rx7 about a month ago, its been sat for 8 years and will hopefully be on the road again soon.( Currently at rx motors having a bit of work done)

Heres some pics of when i got it home.

(http://i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii515/tjp8/IMG_20170416_102656987_zpso6sqc4ki.jpg) (http://s1257.photobucket.com/user/tjp8/media/IMG_20170416_102656987_zpso6sqc4ki.jpg.html)

Basicly we got the car home and it wouldnt start.  we did take the plugs out and put some atf fluid in the engine and rotate it ,just incase. we then found out the fuel pump was seized so we replaced that and it sounded like it wanted to run so then we put a set of new spark plugs in and she fired straight up.

It wouldnt run past half throttle so ive had the car taken to tim at rx motors so he can work some magic on it and get the car road worthy.

Ive bought a front mount intercooler so far and also some metal door handles as i snapped the drivers handle off trying to open the car.

Tims done a compression test on the car and average 6.4 front and 6.7 rear.
The car has only covered 30k from new.

Love the look if the rx7 and cant wait to actually drive it.

Thanks for looking .

:welcome: to the MRC. Loving that you are putting another one of these (ever rarer) cars back on the road. I'm sure Tim can sort it. Keep us posted on progress  :13:

Yeah must admit i didnt want to buy a fixer upper but this one was so cheap i could factor in a rebuild and itd still be cheaper then  some rolling shells on ebay,
When my 350z sells il push more money into this car to make it back to its former glory.

Also the car came on ohlins coilovers, hks intercooler pipes, apexi dump valve, turbo timer, boost gauge on the steering surround,  parallel turbos, knight sports mapped ecu, knight sports dials. massive exhaust from the front to the back(unknown make).

Thanks for looking .

Il be on the look out for an apexi ecu as soon as ive drove the car a bit :)

Cars back big thanks to rx motors motd and alot of jobs done.

She drives so well but there is a couple of problems,

The fuel gauge didnt work so i fixed it and it only goes up to quater of a tank which was better then empty i suppose lol!

The car will struggle to idle when its warm when u get to a junction and sometimes will cut out.

When u boost itl go from 3-4k then nothing itl just pull back and then u get no boost at all.

Definately love driving this car and the looks u get while driving too is great.

cool,

1. boost issues can be a pain to sort, i ve studied the drawings and diagrams and read loads am im still not 100% sure i know how it all works..lol

it will be something simple but as there some much stuff associated with the control can be confusing...have you got a boost gauge, first thing you need and then see what psi your generating and report back?

2. Fuel gauge...seem like the sender float is hanging up? did you remove the pump carrier and sender? worth pulling out and moving manually but be gentle as tight fit.

ill be over Shell sometime this week for fuel lol! x4 seesion at Combe sat need some 99...

Thanks for the help , also atm the car is running an auto ecu as my ecu kept the fan running .

Ive got a boost gauge
(http://i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii515/tjp8/IMG_20170416_103331017_zps1pt8h90b.jpg) (http://s1257.photobucket.com/user/tjp8/media/IMG_20170416_103331017_zps1pt8h90b.jpg.html)

It gets to 12 o clock on the gauge then u hear it dump then a wurring/rumbly sound and all boost will stop and il get a little beeping noise.

Tim said take off the boost controller which is fitted as that might be playing up also ?

But il check all the hoses ect too.

I didnt take the fuel pump out of the tank before i just cleaned up the wiring and jiggled it about really. But i will remove it later hopefully and give it another go .

Thanks for your help.

Hiya mate...stock boost pattern is 10 8 10...if your at 1bar thats 13.5 psi...poss get fuel cut mate as poss old ecu had a chip or summit from japan...
Ideally if you remove the boost controller then the ecu would control boost and all should be fine...
* messy about can cause engine bye bye though mate*
Its difficult to know what to suggest mate.
Im out n my garage over westbury all day if you wanted to bring it over and we can have a look together?

found it!....ref our conversation....tad complicated....
like i said if non sequential then gonna struggle to control boost on std ecu...and again as a Knight sport original ecu fitted probably tweaked for exhaust mods....
Get and Apexi and get it mapped problem solved.

Post by: boosted on June 04, 2017, 09:22:18 AM
Just had a thought....if you do get it to me and it is non sequential i can plumb the actuator for spring pressure only so 7psi this will stop the fuel cut and risk of engine bye bye....i ran my first Fd on this for over a year non sequential.. still plenty fast!

If you want to go out as a passenger on the day, probably in an RX-8, but there are other rotary options available ;), then bring a helmet (or hire one at the circuit). Pay £10 on the day for a passenger wristband and find me (most people know me and can point me out  ;)) and I'll arrange up to 4 rides if you want them. First track session is 11.30am.

Cars now been dropped off at rx motors, ian noticed straight away that the previous owner fitted the boost controller wrong so ive told them to rip it off and revert it back to standard, next issue is to sort out the stalling issue while at junctions. Only other thing is to sort the gear shifter out as its so sloppy so i spect it needs new bushings.

Looking forward to getting it back.

Just gunna enjoy driving it for now .

Still have a few issues with the car the idle is a bit lumpy when cold, and the boost is intermittent e.g sometimes feels like its pulling back.

Also sometimes when i come to a stop after a 20 mile journey it spews a cupful of coolant out under the car in the area the overflow bottle is.

Ive done a champagne test and no bubbles , so ive ordered a new thermostat as the one init has been sat for 8 years and a new coolant cap. Also got some new silicone ht leads as im sure the ones on it are getting on abit now.

I think it idles over 1k rpm when its cold but it hunts up and down the revs a small amount too and sometimes sounds to me its misfiring.

Also pops and bangs very loud between gear changes , so may be over fueling too, im guna clean the iac tomorrow hopefully and see if that helps.

I want to replace all the vacume hoses with silicone , is there anywhere i can get size info for these hoses from.

Also want to install a vertical radiator is there a diy for this? And any information on whats radiator to replace the old one with ?

Thanks
Tj

Mine starts at 1800 rpm and drops as it warms... google thermopellet its a wax pellet that controls cold idle speed fed by a water line through throttle body...its prob that...be vary of iacv...bit of a bitch to set up.
Check the thermal pellet first...also you should have a small amount of slack in your throttle cable.
Pops bang yep fuel dumped into exhaust...not a real concern gonna be running rich due to lower boost.

offer still stands if you come over mine we can do a walk round and im happy to pass on my knowledge gained over last few years...ref lumpy idle id  see if thermopellet operating first 1000rpm is not enough...if its not operating throttle body coolant way blocked with crud and or return over at cooling tower....mine had been stood and was blocked with scale...photos etc are in my build thread atmo..( photobucket may block em soon).
Title: Re: Tjp8 rx7 build thread

Yeah il have to take a trip over and we can have a look over the car and see if we can resolve some of the issues, ive replaced the ht leads and cleanrd the iac and its idling alot better but still not perfect,

I did start the car earlier and when cold itl rev to around 1500 then if u blip the throttle itl drop down to 950 odd.

New silicone hoses and thermostat fitted, also had a custom made bottom bush made for the short shifter, new oil in the shift tower too, still need the turbos looking at as its not running 100%.

Also when a gear is selected stationary the revs drop and hunt.

We will get to the bottom of these issues oneday .

I thought the same but upon inspection the spring seems ok and fully extends and retracts with the clutch pedal.

Could the auto ecu be affecting the idle when gear is selected ?

If you stop counting it doesn't hurt so much . I bought a fixer upper and ended up with an unexpected engine rebuild! Gave up counting and telling the misses at that point

Just been out to hoover the car and the passenger footwell is wet, not soaking but damp to touch on the top and wet underside.
Heater matrix maybe ?

It stank too bad to taste it haha , but my coolant is dropping a small amount every time i drive it.

Ive written tim a small list of issues and il see if he can sort it all out for me as i sold my 350z last night so guna spend a small amount in this :)

The 350z is a brilliant car was always a dream car of mine, such a smooth ride and power whenever u need it and handled so well. Had her for nearly 5 years sold it for 3500,

People dont usually like buying them with 100k on the clock or more so there is alot of bargains out there.

For sure the rx7 will only rise in price now a clean oem one will fetch a premium in a few years. The 350z has hit rock bottom prices now .

Cars been dropped off at rx motors to have fuel filter, gearbox oil change and some faults looking at, also if i manage to find an apexi fit that and set it up for me.

When i have the engine rebuilt and then mapped .

Oo yes she sounded so nice and felt so fast. Still got a couple of issues with it though.

Cut out on me twice now when im just idling at a stand still, also the heat exhaust light will light up for a couple of seconds then go off.

Am i right in thinking this is the apexis way to say theres a fault  somewhere ?

When it cuts out is it still warming up? Mine may cut out once when driving whilst warming up  at junction etc it rights at the end of the warm up cycle when revs drop...but once warm will never do it.

Around 10 minutes driving id say it was before it cut out While i was edging forward in traffic.

Such an awesome car though im guna live with the issues for a bit so i can just drive it  :)

Been driving the car to work and noticed the water dropping, recon ive got a water leak somewhere as theres no white smoke on startup , no bubbling of the coolant and no smoke while im driving either

The passenger footwell is wet though . Could the heater core be dripping as its been sat 8 years maybe degraded ?

Ive checked all other pipework ect cant see anything unusual .

What do you guys think?

I live in paulton, near radstock/midsomer norton, often see a black rx7 driving around and also a white time attack looking one driving about.

I dont mind having the engine built as its within my budget but i dont feel the water seals are gone as none of the common signs are there .

Yeah man for sure, thats if mines still working by then, its doing some funky idling at the moment too.

I think this apexi is worse then when it was on the standard ecu haha

Take it to a specialist and get it sorted. They often idle strange with apexi when air con is on

Its been back and forth to rx motor in sailisbury for 6 months, ive done less then 1k miles since owning the car haha i do want it 100% working oneday though.

May take it to rotary motion next as its a fair bit closer to me.

Car was hunting at idle ect so ive redone the rats nest with good quality sillicone hoses also replaced a few solenoids i broke.

Fitted a dm motorsports idler pully and deleted the airpump, fitted all blockoff plates, removed aircon pump and pipes as it didnt work anyway. Also found a small water leak behind where the airpump was which was a loose hose.

Now idle is much better no hunting or stalling so far when coming to a stop.

Also have a feed downpipe ready to go on and need to plumb my boost controller back in.

Next jobs are fit my koyo n flo radiator and front mount intercooler, downpipe and boost controller then take it to be mapped somewhere .

Car was stalling out at idle when warm, bought a multimeter and checked the tps and when i check it was out, so i set that up again now she doesnt stall out at warm idle anymore and neither when i come to a stop . Very pleased with that .

Cant believe this car performs so well and on its original engine without a build specially after it sat unused for 8 years.

Yeah finally enjoy driving it :), i jet wash the car/under it and the arches after i drive it these last few weeks to get rid of as much grit as possible.

To be fair it doesnt go far probably 30 miles a week.

Just hit 31,800 miles on the clock  :).
