Title: RX8 versus rx7fd on track who'd win???
Post by: boosted on April 06, 2017, 07:23:30 PM
whats your opinions on this....

having driven both models on track....

I think the fd will always win 90% of the time due to horsepower advantage. I remember being shocked few japfests ago Clive coming by me in his old track 8 but its was after the chequer flag to show track session finished.... :nono: :P

and Silverstone last year i was on track for first time in the red 1 so taking very steady to bed in all the work....it was wet so let some 8's go to prove the grip was there....so the only time ive been passed is by choice........

difficult for me to determine as my s type was too softly sprung for me to push but both my mildly tuned Fd have walked 8's on track.

Obviously both cars drive equally well on track ;) ;) ::)

Ow, come on Jon, you will get me lynched if I favour one over the other   :friends:

Well, I guess it depends on track too. I imagine that tracks like Silverstone and Combe favorites FD. But tracks with lots of tight corners and not much straights favorites 8´s.

It would be awesome to see real comparison, in several different track. GPS based timing system with lots of check points, so you can see lots of sector times...

so where saying the 8 has fantastic handling which i agree, but the fds isnt bad...its proper well thought race inspired just an older design....

The RX-7 is no question the faster car. The RX-8 was applauded for its stiff chassis, neutral cornering balance and good ride quality for high performance driving on B roads but it's still way slower than the RX-7.

Exhibit A: Best Motoring RX-8 Test Against Rivals at Tsukuba Circuit
1:11.66 Time Attack Lap
Watch video from 18:46 to 37:30 for a road comparison of the RX-7 (Spirit R, lol) to the RX-8 and also the RX-8s race against its rivals at Tsukuba.

Exhibit B: Best Motoring 1992 RX-7 FD Debut Battle Against Rivals at Tsukuba
1:08.35 Fastest Lap
Really fun race but no subtitles. Worth a watch to see a bright yellow FD beat the competition.

Exhibit C: Best Motoring 1999 RX-7 Type RS (280ps) and Type R (265ps) Debut Battle Against Rivals at Tsukuba
Type RS: 1:04.88 Time Attack
Type R: 1:05.45 Time Attack
Great video compilation with all eras of FD RX-7s tested but no subtitles. 99 spec race begins at about 47:00.

Pete (conan) on rx8oc said rx8s are faster than rx7fds on track....i know he can drive very well  being an ex racer...but i think real world 7 is quicker personally.

The yellow fd won that battle very convincingly.

Well yeah, he would beat me in his RX-8 and me in my RX-7 because he is a far superior driver. But as the Best Motoring video shows with a cast of racing drivers that have all competed professionally (whether retired or still competing), the FD is several seconds faster around a very small track like Tsukuba. I mean, Tsukuba takes a little over a minute but on something like the Snetterton 300 it would take you over 2m20s in a RX-8. The FD would likely win by over 10 seconds in a time attack scenario. It's simply got more power and about 95% of the handling ability of the RX-8.

Another amazing thing about the Best Motoring evidence is just how much Mazda improved the FD over the years, and I would imagine the 02 Type RZ and 02 Spirit R would be a tenth or two faster than the Type RS as well. Same with the NSX and GT-R improvements as well.

Must be somewhere on here.

Pre RX-8 Launch a promo video went out showing the forth coming RX-8 and  spirit doing a lap around a mountainous circuit in Japan.

Yes the Spirit R pulled away on the straights, but guess what, the lap times were the same  :great:.

FD owners on here at the time said it was a fix, but now I know better  ;)

Your statement doesn't change the fact that the FD is much faster than the RX-8. Even the R3 equivalent as presented in the below video is only running 1:10.46 at Tsukuba.

Now, that doesn't mean the RX-8 is not the better handling car because it is. The chassis is superior to the FD.

RX-8 Chassis vs. Older Rotaries with Mazda designer and Mr. Amemiya

Modified RX-7s vs. Modified RX-8s (including 20B RX-8)
Judging by the best times you can see the potential of the RX-8 chassis compared to even the best modified FDs. A great 90 minute video all about rotaries with a 787B appearance. There used to be an English subtitle version of this DVD but it's now moved to Vimeo where you have to pay to watch it with the English subs. Was a great video though.

I have some of those vids on DVD. Believe me, they are worn out :D

But yes, those vids are quite good for comparison. All of those drivers know that track well, and its quite simple track to go flat out. However, I still feel that tracks layout can change results alot. For example, Tsukuba is a track that needs power more than handling.

But, if you think this differently, ask you self what RX-8 needs to be much better car that FD? What if 8 would have been fitted supercharger from factory? Or extra rotor?

I FD might be better car at track, but fact is that it is sportscar, but 8 is fricin family saloon :)

Having been to more than one rx8oc track day i can say from experience a oem seq twin with mid level tune can easily outrun the na rx8s. Handling in the 8s is reportedly better but unless your a driver able to take advantage of this you won't notice and an fd's straight line speed is more than enough to just keep pulling lap on lap.

I'm in no way knocking rx8s as I'm a huge fan for a na legend but a turboed fd is very very quick car.

What? No.

Tsukuba is a tiny track that relies on handling much more than power. That is why in so many Best Motoring Tests the NSX, RX-7 and GTR at factory 280bhp levels could keep up with the Porsche 911's and Ferarri's they would test them against on that track. However, when they would test these cars against the European exotics on larger tracks like Fuji and Suzuka the unmodified Japanese cars would get left in the dust, because Fuji and Suzuka are real power tracks.

I have watched those Best Motoring vids for ages now. Really fascinating to see difference between different cars. Also, as Cib wrote, really awesome to watch when they get big guns and go flay out in big tracks :D
