Title: 10mm Wheel Spacers on rear?? FD3
Post by: leeroy_25 on November 21, 2016, 09:21:34 PM
I hate the thought of wheel spacers but need some wheels for my car ad the ones I want will require 10mm slip on spacers on the back of the car. What are the thoughts about running this on an FD? Will I need longer studs in the hub and if so how much of a pain in the butt are they to swap out? Hub off or can you do it by just taking the caliper and disc off?

Advice please.
Thank you
Lee

Hi Lee,

I have used 5mm slip on spacers in the past on FD's but on a standard stud thats all thats going to be safe.

You will need bolt on spacers like in the picture below, then you bolt the wheel to the studs on the spacer, problem is I think your thinnest to fit these is going to be 20mm

In which case I need to fit longer studs then to be safe and run 10mm spacers. any thicker will be too much. Am I correct in reading the only way to get the studs out is take the hub off or can you put a hole in the back plate or something and get them out in situe?
Hub off does not sound like a fun job as largely it sounds like the bearings stick on and you need to replace all that as well?

Thanks
Lee

Sorry Lee, its not a case of messing with the backplate, its a strip the hub assembly  to fit long studs :(

Gather this now after much reading!! What is the chance of getting the hub of clean without buggering the bearing?!

Ive changed wheel studs in the past and sometimes there is sweet spot behind that by rotating the hub there is enough room for the old stud to come out and the new 1 in...never done on an fd but worth a look by getting up on a jack and looking at from behind.

If you search rear rx7 fd hub on ebay theres a couple stripped and looks to a sweet spot around the 4 to 6pm area...

Okay.. I will check it out.. Even if I need to get in a grind a little bit off the hub with a dremel it saves a hell of a lot of work.

I wouldnt dremel the hub mate. I would consider detaching an arm or 2 though...the studs would need a short sharp shock to dislodge them prob best using pentrating spray day before and use a dolly or alloy bar between stud n hammer...decent lump hammer or 32lb ball pein...plus gloves n safety glasses.
Refit id gently tap into recess and then use bolt and spacer probably an imperial socket to draw the studs in whilst doing nut up.

Will check it out.. Don't panic.. If I was removing metal it would only be if it was a tiny amount to gain clearance.. a couple of mm wouldn't hurt. but I would entertain anymore and it depends on access and stuff anyway. Will take a look at the weekend now.
Cheers
