Title: Rx7 fd gated sump?
Post by: boosted on August 19, 2016, 07:03:21 PM
Anybody know of someone that makes 1?  id like to buy 1 i have 1 fitted on the westy rx8 and its awesome...zero oil in catch tank.

ive trawled the net and discovered i have a baffled Gb RE;speed alloy filler neck...that clearly does not work...

Me too,  the only solution I found for this was to run with below half on the dipstick. Anything over just fills your catch can and or intake pipework.

The cloud of blue smoke when you next start up in the paddock is the big giveaway 😁

Thankfully fd's runs mafless ... more of a prob on rx8's....when a slug oil oil hits the maf.

well my penny washer trick has drastically reduced it but as im gearing up for a sump removal hoping a solution out there....

ive running the catch tank vented to atmosphere now ....and plugged the hose tail on the primary turbo elbow.

Jon
I think Danny at DM Motorsport used to make a baffle for the FD Sump.

found this on DM site , which is a plate over the top. seems to be more focused on engine flex...mmmm

my school of thought on this is it oil slosh, in a hard turn a slug of oil is sent back up the filler tube...and if catch tank under vacuum its carried to catch tank...and/or if vent to atmosphere then its pushed assisted as oil vapour to catch tank....

has anybody ever had there dipstick pop out? seems like theres enough restriction there to stop oil going up dipstick tube.... im also thinking of for track use removing dip stick and plumbing outlet to catch tank and running my 2 outlets on the filler tube into a t to each other then to catch tank...should be enough engine breathing???? i would say if the dipstick pops out then insufficient breathing of engine ...never had this happen on an fd or 8.

i know the gated sump works on my 8 engined westy on slicks on track...filler neck is still plumbed via catchtank to intake so under vacuum and i get zero oil in there....

Jon, my previous engine (big street port (540bhp) used to push oil back up dipstick tube. I didn't understand this oil issue then, so I improved the location of the dipstick in the tube, ie; made the seal better. Result was the dipstick was pushed up from the tube and oil came out.

Now at the time I was filling the sump to max on the dipstick (on track), I know dohhh !

Speak to Clive about sump baffles, I too like the idea, but I think Clive has some knowledge.

There has to be a technology solution to the FD oil surge issue somewhere, we cannot be the only guys experiencing it.

Im aware of Clives findings.....
Another thought...deeper sump with extended oil pick up....
Gotta be a fix n forget solution solution 'out there'   apart from dry sumping that is.

Jon, Deeper sump might bring new problems as it will be below the protection of the sub frame. I also thought of wider instead of deeper, but it sits tight in the sub frame, so wider doesn't offer much scope either.

I wonder how Phil Collard got round this problem !

Yes it would be great if the racers would share.

Yes, me and few others here have been thinking that too. Would like to know what kind of "systems" everyone is using...

Away for a few days with limited access but I will post my oil surge  trials & tribulations next week
