Title: Hi All
Post by: lungxingquan on August 04, 2016, 11:48:54 AM
Hi everyone,

A month and a bit ago i sold my pride and joy a 1994 Toyota Celica GT4 ST205 running 305bhp, it was only meant to be a leg up in the turbo Japanese car world but i ended keeping it for 7 years.

The car i've always wanted was a RX7 FD or a supra and i think i've settled on the RX7 because they are different and interesting and in my opinion the best looking car of that era.

I've settled on either red, white or blue for the colour but i'm still undecided on twin sequential or a moded to single turbo

It will be my weekend and Friday car as i have a diesel daily driver

I'm sorry if these are the same old questions but i have a few as i only know a little about rotary's

how long do the engines last before a rebuild - i realise this depends on the type of rebuild and i expect a bridge port wouldn't last as long?

how often does it need servicing?

I'm 6ft and I've herd they are small inside am i likely to fit?

what sort of compression should you get for the rotors, i know there should be six figures but what is bad, good and excellent

I like in Chelmsford in Essex, are there any good rotary specialists that people would recommend near me?

I've currently got £5,000-£7,000 to spend but I'm happy to wait and save to £10+ if its worth doing?

I'm a bit worried about the rear wheel drive and the amount of power as the last car was AWD, I'm i likely to spin it?

Thanks for any help
Rick

Welcome Rick,
I cannot answer all your questions, but I can offer my experiences;
Your current funds should get you a decent FD with twin turbo. You are correct thinking compression is key to establish the condition of the engine. I believe recordings around 7 for front and rear housings is a good starting point, however readings in the high 6's may not indicate a poor engine. It is essential both housings give similar readings.

Single or twin - well I went single as I wanted an easy life from the famous 'rats nest' of hoses. However other guys on here have purchased twins without problems.

Condition is critical for the engine and running gear.

In Essex I think you have a couple of specialists that I know of, but there are others; Essex Rotary specialise in Rotaries as do Powergains.

Height - I know taller occupants have either changed the stock seat for an aftermarket bucket or I think there is a modification to the adjusters which relocates the seat further back if necessary. I would recommend sitting in one first.

Rear wheel drive turbo cars will require some caution until your used to when the power comes on. Mine is a high output single and is as compliant as I want it to be, or as loud. So its all down to understanding the car and how you drive it.

FD's are certainly an excellent alternative to the mainstream Japanese options that are available.

Good luck with your search.

Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the help, it should come in handy

I've asked this company for a bit of information on the top white rx7, like compression results and mod list etc..
http://www.apexrotary.com/used-cars/

I was also considering this one as it has the rota's i want on a rx7 and for that price i could afford a engine rebuild and either go single or stay with the twin turbo's possibly

But i said to my self this time i wouldn'g get a project  :))

Thanks,
Rick

Hi mate,
welcome to MRC!  ;)  Can i ask what you want the car for...sunday blast part daily or track?

Im 6ft and fit in the car no probs. had 2 1 with stock seats and this 1 with buckets and no problem with headroom even with a helmet on.

Charlie P on here has a nice single for sale and he has sold a few over the years . its in the for sale section.

That 1 above needs some work....if you put into a specialist prob not ecomonical versus what youd pay for a sorted motor...unless your handy with the spanners.

Apex rotary dont seem to have a very good reputation ....from what ive read mate.

servicing 3-4 k oil n filter sparks 5k depending on tune and coolant change yearly.

this is a sorted motor from a forum member...Charlie has a good rep here and other forums.

Lcrotary had my car 7 months and it still came back broke a few other horror stories floating around on fduk.
Have a look on fduk as some real good cars come up sale and are properly looked after

Hi Jon,

Thanks for all the replies, mostly a Sunday blast but I'd like to do some track days, I have seen that car you linked and it does look nice, not a fan of the wheels though and I'd have to save for a bit longer, but if that means I won't buy a dog and end up spending a bomb it may be worth it

Thanks
Rick

Cool. Yeah better aim for sorted 1 with good cooling mods if going on track...dont rule out the stock twins though...mine and prior on twins still plenty of poke with the low kerb weight.
