Title: Potential new owner
Post by: Karl_Mac_ on May 20, 2016, 02:36:29 PM
Hi all,

I will hopefully be selling my Lancer Evo V at the weekend to fund a fresh import RX 7, I'm aware of a lot of then downsides to owning an rotary (like fuel consumption, oil consumption, compression tests etc...) but thought I'd check for more detailed stuff first.

- I'm in Sheffield, as far as I can see the nearest specialist to me is Rotary Revs in w.yorks, are they ok and/or have I missed someone else?

- See lots of reference to the 'rats nest' of vacuum hoses, but not much info on preventative fixes, is this something you can do yourself?

- Any other advice / buyers guides / owners groups I should be speaking too would be greatly appreciated.

Finding a good specialist is vital but tricky.  I'd see how far you are from Steve Rivett, if it's reasonable distance then I'd start with him.

The rats nest is a network of aged, leaky rubber pipes, connecting fragile plastic valve bodies, and solenoids that cook in the underbonnet heat.  Almost any part can fail, giving erratic boost pattern when it does.

If you buy a '96 or later car the rats nest is somewhat simpler (although it can certainly go wrong).

Replacing the rubber pipes with silicone ones is a good start, although be careful not to snap any of the fragile plastic nipples off the connections at each end.

Personally I'd say, be aware that this can go wrong, and find an FD specialist who'll be able to fix it when it does.

Hi Karl and  :welcome:

This may help, Steve Garbitt has a lot of experience and would be able to help looking after the car on 01302 726763 or e-mail steve@mx5motors.com.

Not sure how far this is for you but their address is Hangthwaite Road, Carcroft, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, DN6 7BD.

Hope this helps
