Title: The truth about tuners.....
Post by: jay on August 14, 2004, 10:21:23 PM
As I\'m sure some of you have read on another thread there seems to be a bit of gripin about various tuners goin on.
Well as far as I know this is an open forum and not here to provide any particular tuner with a good or bad reputation. So I think as members we should take advantage of this. Surely this forim is here to provide it\'s members with information and opinions whether they be good or bad.
So if anyone would like to post thre experiances with tuners or suppliers i think it can only be useful to others. I\'m not doin this to start a bitchin match just to provide fellow members with honest opinions.
I myself have used Geff for mappin and was impressed with his work. I\'ve used ShyAutos for parts and was very impressed with prices and service. Also used Ds Engineering for service and new clutch and found Steve to be a very honest and genuine bloke.
Once tried Nemesis for Gauges and found them to be crap, never returned my phone calls and only seemed interested in sellin me a single turbo.
Well I hope this does\'nt get taken down and some opinions get given..........good or bad
 Cheers Jay....:wave

Yo Jay,

have been to WGT engineering in Northwich twice now for bits a bobs and found it very well run and organised. Had my new aluminuim rad put in from there, and had a service too.

Going back there on Thursday for remap and injector upgrade, will let you know how i get on.

Pip gardner in charge there, very helpful and knowledgeable:)

For the first few months of my FD ownership, I used RoTechniks. Can\'t comment really any further as I haven\'t used them in a long time.

For the last 2 years I\'ve used RE:Worx and have not had any issues with them. Geff has been always helpful and has always given me good advice and workmanship. I\'ve learnt a great deal from him. Only complaints are he can be busy and I need to wash the mugs most visits!

I\'ve used Tim at RX Motors for a few bits n pieces and again have been very happy, especially with his Alladins Cave of parts!

Yeah Geff can be lousy to get a mug of coffee out of.

I\'ve used him with no complaints too.

I used Rotechnics once with my MX-5 and had mixed results (plus a bollocking from work as my extended lunch break took4 hours ratehr than their predicted two, they did not charge me for the full though).

If I was up north I\'d probably use WGT from all I\'ve heard, though for my MX-5, when supercharged, without disrepescting Pip, I still would have taken it to Maztek in Telford.

We used tim at RX motors aswell for a bumper bar and downpipe for a 1st gen. Used RE Worx for a check up ewhich was fine but when we came to pick the car up he wasn\'t there (he was stuck in traffic on a road test). Then we were going to get stiffer suspention put on and we went all the way down there and he never turned up :( We didn\'t bother in the end.

This section is all very well untill someone posts something that someone is not happy with, and then theres legal action and the forum gets closed down...

Seen it happen elsewhere.

Just be carefull.

I agree, but as long as it is made clear that these are opinions and not statements of fact there can be nothing slanderous surely?

I have used RX Motors for my re-build and also for random bits for the Gen 1 and must say Tim is great he comes up with plenty of ideas and does a good job too! Doesn\'t do much on the tea front though!

Tea or coffee at Tims, i thinks its bring a bottle if you go over there!!!
Great service though at RX Motors, are relatively close to me so convienent for me as well. Very helpfull and always happy to give valuable advise and probably have got every part you will ever need.
I have also found Ross at Dragon to be excellent, have had a few aftermarket parts from him and he has also been happy to loan me some bits when i got in a difficult situation with SVA.  Always a great help on advise with regard to problems.
So thanks to the two mentioned above and would recommend them to anyone.
Brian has also been excellent and willing to help out at the drop of a hat, so thanks to Brian too.

Real good thread well done Jay, and we don\'t just need good stuff as MRC needs to provide as unbiased opinion as possible about where it\'s members can buy their chosen product,  part or vehicle  or whatever from, safe in the knowledge that they are not going to be ripped off, or if they potentially could be, that they enter into whatever deal with their eyes wide open !

As Lee say\'s we will run this good or bad but if it gets too messy we will have to clip or remove certain posts if we deem that they are potentially damaging to MRC

Slander - spoken
Libel - written

Both are examples of defamation.

Problem for the forum would be when someone requests something thay feel to be an unfair representation to be removed and then the forum either has to censor it\'s members expressed views or ignore the complaint and hope the compleiner doesn\'t  get legal.

While I think freedom of opinion and it\'s expression is important if the forum were threatened by that then it should be discouraged.

Possibly a thread with clear instructions on what\'s acceptable - i.e. not a place to air grievances or grind an axe but somewhere to express personal opinion bakced up by anecdotal evidence would be the way to go?

My experience so far.

Used re:worx to fix a boost problem, price for the work seemed good but took quite a while.  Geff was pretty busy so lack of customer service (no cup of coffee ;) ) was understandable.

Have used WGT for everything else (rebuild, mapping, de-cat etc) and their service is top notch.  Friendly and reliable but possibly not the cheapest.  Instant coffee wasn\'t the best either!  Quality of the work is as good as it gets and Pip\'s always happy to discuss and provide advice.

Fortunately not had any bad experiences yet.

Just bought some parts from Shy - service great so far ;)

Well I\'ve only used JPS as i\'ve had no need as of yet to take mine to a specialist. JPS I found great, good price for servicing, good advice and most importantly, let me stand about and watch everything they did *I like to learn* :D

I\'ll be using Reworx shortly, I\'m sure they\'ll be as great :D

I want boooooooost ;(

Great service from RX Motors when I phoned, but never got a response to an E-mail. :)

Very impressed with DS engineering when I took the car for a service. Whoever it was (Sorry, I forget names easily) struck me as being very honest and knowledgeable.

Good thread, I was going to start something similar.

I\'ve used Dragon Performance, and while Ross is a great bloke, forthcoming with information and help, I have found the delivery of orders to be appauling. Communication of updates was also less than acceptable for me.  I accept that I may have just been unlucky with the bits I ordered.

I\'m booked in for some work with Geff at RE:Worx at the end of the month. Looking forward to it, and hopefully it will inspire me to use a UK company again. No comments yet as I haven\'t been there :D

I\'ve used RX7Store.net and RX7Trix.com for all my other purchases. Both have excellent product ranges, good prices (even with import tax) and better customer services.

What I would give (not the car!) to live in the US or Australia.

Edited to say:  I should point out that I have only ordered twice from Dragon Performance, so it\'s not like it\'s happening all the time ;)

Dragon : I\'ve bought a couple of things from Dragon and they both turned up next day exactly as promised. No problems there.

RX Motors : Tim always has what I need and luckily for me, he\'s not far away

..not sure I\'d drink his coffee though :rollin :rollin

DS Engineering failed to machine me a spare crank shaft pulley accurately despite reassurances - and it took him weeks to do (for my MX-5), also a MX-5 owning friend of mine had serious problems with him when he asked for his car to be returned to stock.  After a long time of nothing seemingly being done, he went to collect it to do it himself to find his hood slashed and bits missing.

Neither of us will be using him again.

further to my other comments about Dragon.....

I received my Full C-West replica kit this week, which I had been waiting three months for, as the front bumper wasn\'t in stock and had to be ordered.

Well, as it goes the bumper was apparently stuck in customs for a while. Anyway, I asked for a full refund or a solid delivery date. Amazingly, the bumper happened to have turned up and was ready to ship.  Ok, still wasn\'t happy but agreed to accept the shipment to save hassle for both parties.

So I open the box to find a second hand already been painted front bumper, that is cracked on the bottom and has other fibreglass repairs.

I don\'t remember that being part of the £1500 I paid!

So Ross, are you telling me this is the bumper I waited 3 months for??

Regards,

Extremely pissed off Dragon Customer

Always used Rotechniks until I started servicing it myself.  Excellent service, particularly if David Rollings works on your car, that man is a gentleman and a talented engineer.

I always seemed to get what I wanted from Rotechniks, it was undeniably expensive, but at the time I could afford it and gave them total freedom to replace anything necessary whilst working on the car.

Used RX Motors and Dragon for various bits, found them perfect for that.

I hear stories about others, but if experience counts then I suspect it would be difficult to get better than Tim (RX Motors) and Pip (WGT).

Used WGT for the past 2 years, rebuild, new exhaust, boost problems, tiny niggles, have found it nothing short of fantastic.

Pip always makes time to come and chat to you about any queries you have, explains things thoroughly etc, great service, nice bloke.

One thing i will say (no criticism of Pip as it cant be helped) is when theres something up with your car its a pain in the arse to have to wait around 3 weeks till it gets sorted, amazing how in demand his services are, although i can see why! Its about time he expanded and employed a few more monkeys me thinks :D

WGT are fantastic. I could not recomend more highly.

Dragon, well as Martin said Ross is a nice person. Unfortunatly my car was away for 11 months and had to go to WGT just to get running. My experience is similar to Garys with his car. I am not going into to much detail as it is all going to court. Some people on here have seen my car and trust me they are horrified. I will wait untill the solicitors have finished with him before all the deatails are released.

I\'ve used:

RX Motors (just up the road from me) for Clutch and de-cat - did the job, reasonable price, fantastic warehouse(s) stacked ceiling high with "stuff" - god knows how they know what they have in there !

RE:Worx - Geff did a great job on both a healthcheck/service when I first got the car, supplying & fitting a used Apexi induction kit and on fitting/mapping the PowerFC up at CPL.

Thames Valley MOT - Dave obvious loves his car, and RX7\'s in general - a great guy and well worth the travel time to Reading.

I\'ve purchased from various on-line/mail order retailers, including Rotary Extreme, Nemesis, Taka Kaira to name but a few. No real problems with any of them. Luckily I have an office in Seattle, an office in Singapore and one in Sydney, so I can usually get reasonable sized items delivered there and pick it up when I\'m next \'in town\' (saves duty and all that).

Booked in at Re:Worx for ECU install/map and feel assured that they will do a good job from the write up on this thread.

Ordered several parts from them and am pleased with the prices.

Ordered from RX7Store.net - service poor and I\'d avoid them - although the prices are ok it\'s easier and 10000 quicker to get stuff from the UK.  I cancelled my order in the end.

WGT are fantastic - checked over the car before I bought it, very comprehensive report.

Just had the car worked over, paid Pip £1,000 for lots of new shiny things - and they all work perfectly. And are quite shiny.

Dont understand the British preoccupation with tea - so didnt want any - but was asked...if that helps anyone...

Pip is a lovely bloke, and put up with me bounding around the car asking questions - and even fixed a bunch of other minor problems for free.

ive delibratly tryed as many companies as poss. all the rotary ones are really very helpfull.

before starting the project i talked to pip WGT and he told me what i needed to know. he had supplyed most of the bits and the biggest problem i had was the time it took him to get my injectors and fuel rail.

while putting it together i phoned RE=WORKS to order somthing worth £600 but was told i could do it a different way so they done themself out of a sale but i was very happy. bought other stuff from them.

RX MOTORS have supplyed me stuff. usually got it in stock. not over impressed with the fact you have to send a cheque first then wait for it to clear. dont know if things are different now though. helpfull too.

DRAGON been down there and bought bits. nice guy took the time to go through what i was doing and sold me what i needed.

ROTARYTARTS got a few bits. gary even personally delivered them. good stuff

HAYWARD ROTARY ENGINES. top bloke. any more layed back and he would need a caster wheel on the back of his head. ported and biult the engine also tuned it. helpfull with advice

another helpfull place is OPTION MOTORSPORT. didnt even buy anything from them but did feel like a valued customer.

on trying several places I will reccomend pip at WGT and the crew at roteknics in reading... not the cheapest but you feel as they your car will be well looked after and the quality of work is outstanding, allways atleast two people working on the car and I think that is where I will go for the rest of my rotary life, unless I am seeing my brother 10 miles away from WGT

wont be going to exeter again....
never got offered a cuppa, ( I dont drink T or C but its nice to be asked) didnt feel like a valued customer
wasnot \'allowed\' to ask questions or look at the work that was going on to let the kid get on with the work. For insurannce purposes, wasnt allowed on the site when work was being done... a bit odd really... were they hiding something...

quality of work is \'good\' but lacking on the customer service front for me...

I won\'t be going to exeter again either. Don\'t feel valued really: I didn\'t feel like i had a good customer service from them. I took my FD down on a saturday as it had boosting issues, and they had it all day and still didn\'t fix it (In fact, it came back revving at 2000rpm) and I was charged £100 for \'work done\' and parts, but recieved no receipt! I took it to Pip at WGT and the issue was diagnosed and sorted within 2 hours! (Incorrectly wired pressure and vacuum hoses) and dodgy ECU - of which Pip was happy to answer my questions and I recieved a full invoice for the work carried out. Very pleased with WGT! :D

rotecknics would be closer for you wouldnt it... J11 m4... just passed the RAC building...( closer by about 100 miles!!!)

great work and nice people no the cheapest, but they are enthusiastic and very knowlegable... and the less petrol used would cover the extra expense....

worth a go maybe...

but pip is good...

Glad to see people still usin this thread, it can only be useful imho...
Anyway just got my car back from Shyauto and i have to say what a fantastic job they done :p  :p  I suppose i would have to say that though really ;)  ;)
No in all honesty they were superb, went in for new inj, pump, clutch and service came out with all of them and a remap by Mr Hayward himself. Only slight downside it was in a bit longer than expected, but this was down to them wantin to make sure it was runnin well and sortin out the remap.Took care of all the little things that needed doin and more and always kept me updated.Price was\'nt to terrible aswell, which is always handy.
As for Hayward Rotary it would be nice to meet Carl as he has transformed my car. What a fantastic job cant say enough really.
Totally recommended. :p  :p  :p  :p  :p  :p  :p  :p  :p  :p

Would like to recommend Gary at G and A racing, he knows his stuff and sorted my high idle speed out and fitted a PFC, decat and a big service etc. It wasn\'t a straight forward job as there were other issues that had to be sorted ie knackered speedo that didn\'t like the apexi. He arranged some other clocks for me and it\'s all running sweet now.

Have used Rotecknics for some work, and although they\'re not cheap, i was very happy with their work and level of expertiese.:)

I have also been to Rx-Heaven, who were great too, friendly guys and good customer servise. Lent me a car for the days mine was there. :D

Will probably be going to ReWorks to get it mapped soon.

I have had problems with garages saying they could help me out, and in the end it turns in to a big mess. Stick with the people who know!!! They may cost a little more, but in the long run it\'ll probably end up cheaper as you wont have to get things done twice!! YOU HAVE BEEN TOLD ;)

Have used a few places over the last year...

Used Owen Developments early 05 for mapping my Vpro...hell  of a ong trip..excellent service...very very friendly... and didnt charge me stupid money... had the car for a few hours...but after finding that they couldnt access the ecu ..the understood id come along way and only charged me for 1 hr! Highly recommend these guys

Steve Simpson at Teg Sport...Great dyno setup...gaves me soem very good diagnostic on the supra...def recommend for us northerners..

Pip... not the best experience..charged me alot to do very little... managed to sort the ca rmyself after a coupla hours..wish id done that in the first place..wont go into detail...

Paul at TDI NORTH.... Amazing serivce..very friendly..plently of free coffee.. always kept me up to date... sensible prices.. one of the best up north!! Also now have an Aussie helping out who has done alot with rotaries out in aussie land..shall be tkaing my rx when it arrives..

May also try Hyper Sports and Racing in wigna for apexi mapping..they seem great lads... nice to know there ar emore and more places opening up north..

Just my personal opinions..sure we all havepour own views..

Just to add my 2p here, the first place I tried was Hyeline in Cardiff and I didn\'t have a good experience there.  They talked the talk, but when it came to sorting out a problem with vacuum hoses they missed a split intercooler, knackered y-pipe and a few other things plus tried to sell me new intakes etc.   They also didn\'t have the greatest service when they should have been getting back to me about things.  They also bad mouthed Dragon which in my opinion is a little unprofessional...

I had heard some good things about Dragon previously with the only reason not going to them originally being the distance, wish I had now as it would have saved me cash even with the distance and fuel.

After this I went to Dragon and they sorted everything out no problem with a pretty good turnaround.  Also had a decat and new backbox (with discount) fitted as my old one didn\'t mate with the new centre section properly.

Always found Dragon to be friendly and informative and willing to help.  Getting a new clutch from them in the coming weeks and maybe a new ECU (might have a go at this myself though and let them map it).

Thumb up from me anyway.

have tried few place myself too..hyper sport and racin in wigan was friendly and amazing service...always tryin to lot you in even they are mad busy with bookin..

WGT has mass knowledge of our car but they charged a lot for little things and when i had my fd there i blown engine on the same day i picked my car up from there when they said they had checked the engine....anyway....

Also been to TDI ....serive is good but i m not sure if they are very familar with rotary tuning..

I also used Hyeline in cardiff for a service and the they are a bunch of monkeys, got home ok went to start the car next day to find out there was no water in it, when the changed the coolant they over tightened the screw in the bottom of the rad so the head snapped off, its a wonder i made it the 45 miles home to be honest without overheating. they also didnt get back to after loads of phone calls.

oh yes they also gave dragon one hell of a slating

my mate has probably soend about 3,000 with them and now refuses to use them after they couldnt change his brake pads properly, they left bits out on the one side makeing the pad vibrate continuously and charged him £120 for the pleasure.

Can\'t recommend Shyauto enough, I\'ve been pestering Nigel for ages now for lots of little bits I\'ve needed while the car\'s been in the garage over winter and he hasn\'t let me down yet.

Also Gary at Rotaryart, who even delivered oil to my door in person - now that\'s service!

ordered stuff from WGT and arrrived the next day. Excellent again!

and gary also personally delivered some brake pads to my house when i was desperate a while back. Legend!

My RX7 was previously owned by a very good friend of mine who took it to dragon for the rebuild. 3 months later gets it back, after phoneing them everyday (and them saying, few more days, few more days etc)- shocking condition, cowling missing, wires just untidy, black insulation tape hanging about and a mess - just basic tidyness and housekeeping stuff that you would do if it cost that much and had 3 months. Runs it in, and starts having loads more probs - takes it back to dragon, who dont seem interested - he PAYS to have all new vacuum pipes etc fitted at huge cost - gets it back, few weeks later develps more probs and the second turbo not spooling properly - dragon have it, say everythings ok - now ive got it.

Second turbo (poss actuator) deffinatly does have probs 75% of the time, which is strange as they did 50 miles in it and never found a problem - and i can do 10 miles and it will prob happen 10 times.

I know they are local to me but i wont take it there. Saw the way my mate felt for far too long, hence he sold it. I will travel miles to take it somewhere else. Three of my friends now have rx7\'s (one of which needs a rebuild now), and our business will all go to a better run company who pay attention to detail, and look after there "high bill paying" customers.

Just my opinion

Ps the dragon performance sticker on my car is coming off today

Oh and funnily enough - i just took the brakes apart that dragon fitted brand new - as they were vibrating etc - not a hint of copper grease, rear part of calliper seized. They fitted them about 700 miles ago.

Pretty sure quickfit would have done a better job

The reason I called the previous owner of the car is because that is who my customer was, not you. I was surprised by what you have said, so wanted to call Tim to see if he felt we did not look after him.
He said that he was always happy with the service, and was shocked at what you had said. He also mentioned that he does not know you very well and does not even know your last name! Strange when you said he is a very good friend of yours.
Also there are reasons for the car coming back to us. That being a faulty water temp sender, that gave up after Tim had just completed the run in period. We, and any other tuner rebuild the engine block only, other faults will occur, like any performance car.
Anyway I will not be calling you because you have lied about things, making me waste my time by bothering an old customer. Also I have noticed that you have annoyed a few other members on here and on FDUK. You posted on FDUK \'sod em\' when talking about MRC. So its strange that you post on here at all if its so bad.

Strange how dragon knew exactly what car it was i was talking about.

Im not interested - like i said, every one i know with rx7\'s will not be coming to you - for a reason.

Maybe the previous owner did not want to talk to you or give out my details ? Because he has sold the car. But i know of a few other people with issues relating to your company - i (as you say) am not allowed to get involved as (as you say) it was not my car at the time - but they are getting involved as we speak

Call me if you want - or i go to all the shows so you can catch up we me there instead Ross

I posted the sod em thread because i was bloody disheartened at the fact i came on with a question and got told, it wasnt worth it etc etc - and got quoted with "MAx Power" haha - i see a forum to share tech stuff not to shoot people down in three seconds

As for being a newbie - My R32 GTR was UKD1 snetterton winning car, and my 300ZX is currently in a flim being made at the moment - i think i know 1 or 2 things about performance modification

I have every faith in Ross, full of knowledege, always helpful and some fantastic work and would always use dragons.

just had rebuild from rotechniks..

run in period over, done another 1000 ontop of that and it is running like a dream... good work guys...

they even fixed a problem of a solenoid from the turbos not working after the inital run in period which might not have been their job to fix... NOW THATS THE SERVICE YOU WANT...

well worth the 150 mile round trip.

I would like to give a huge thumbs up to Pip at WGT for actually being one of the few garages who seem to actively answer emails and help with general info in a quick time frame. They really do a brilliant job and if I wasn\'t so far away I could safely say they would get my return business every time.

On the flip side I would like to know why Tim at RX Motors posts up an email address on his website when he never bothers to reply to them? (even when its an enquiry to purchase some parts). Very poor and unreliable.

Why send emails to a garage though? They\'re always busy - it makes much more sense to phone him. I have always got through to Tim when phoning, and he\'s always been able to help me with whatever i need (Except an engine mount, which are as rare as hens teeth!)

Because its alot more convienient to email through lists and explain something in detail through email in my experience.

If they didn\'t want to recieve emails they wouldn\'t bother with a public email address surely? The last time I tried phoning I didn\'t get phoned back when previously promised so as far as I\'m concearned why would I want to waste my time and money speaking on the phone?

About 4 to 5 months ago I started looking around to buy a 3rd generation RX-7 as a replacement to my everyday car. This being the case I wanted to ensure it was going to be as reliable as possible, I soon came to the conclusion that I required a more or less standard or very lightly modified FD.

It was at this time I found MRC and the collection of RX-7 specialists advertised at the top of each page. I spent a lot of time reading about the cars and the various specialists. After talking to a few of the RX-7 specialist / importers I decided I most liked the sound of the service provided by ‘Jimmy’s Mazda RX-7 Specialist’. I went to go and see Andrew who owns Jimmy’s and was very impressed with his knowledge, I looked around the garage and stores and I must say the amount of spares he has availably is very impressive.

Since buying my FD I have only had very minor problems. Jimmy’s provided me with a 3-month warranty on the whole car and a 12-month warranty on the rebuilt engine block. All teething problems I have experienced have been unquestionably covered by the warranty.

I would highly recommend Jimmy’s Mazda RX-7 Specialist for his cars and spares, a pleasure to deal with.

Cheers,
Jim.

P.S. The only down side is that Andrew does not have any tea / coffee making facilities, however he did mention that he was meaning to get some. :Giggle

Personally I think that most workshops are really busy, most of them have not got receptionists or people taking calls on behalf of the owners. There is nothing more frustrating than having to answer a tele call when you are just getting your teeth into some serious work.....takes your mind of the job at hand and it wastes good time....hence most vendours have to work long hours.
I personally email or pm them, state what I want and wait for the reply.......even if it takes a day or two.:Typing

Got my car from Pip @ WGT on Friday.

A big thanks for waiting for me to arrive - traffic problems meant I didnt get there til nearly 6:30!  The 3 1/2 hour journey turned in to just over 5!

I must say that I\'m very pleased with the work.  The car went for a full re-build, bigger secondary injectors (after one of the old ones failed) and WI.

A new water pump was also fitted after he noticed a leak during testing - at least it happened when it was up there!

When he hasnt been able to take my calls, their very helpful receptionist has taken a message and Pip has always returned them promptly.

The car will need a re-map when the engine has done 1k and I can safely say  that I will be going back to WGT.

Why is it when you complain that you get no response from vendors you alway get someone who hardly ever posts (or has a low post count) coming on and accusing you of being rude?

I don\'t think busy is an excuse! If you\'re that busy get more staff!! I\'ve emailed KiwiRE in NZ (they\'re busy building 7/8 sec engines!) and they always reply the next day.

After seeing you have a good old rant I thought I would check my emails, as I don\'t recall you sending me one. Indeed I did receive a mail from which was in my deleted folder. I receive about 30 emails a day, a lot of them a load of junk. Depending on the type of email address displayed some mails go straight in the delete folder. Unfortunately your email address looked like the typical junk mail addresses I get mailed from each day.
Sorry, and no I can\'t get you a price on one.

I just assumed that since your tone here isn\'t the sweetest.. On the other hand you might deserve to be put in the junkmail part, I understand that some emails get lost, too bad it was yours. On the other hand.. Flameing people for a misstake is just so unneccesary. And if you have a buisness, you know how many junkmails there can be in a day/hour/week. Sometimes important ones dissapear.
Just don\'t se how bitching about it will get you anywhere?

If they indeed have misstreated you.. bad them. But as you and I are customers.. I don\'t believe any of the companies web based or not are running with tthe intention of ignoring it\'s customers. If they are. They will loose without you blameing all of them..

Mullins:
Maybe because. As with everything else.. the vendors arn\'t reading every post all the time.. even if they can subscribe to them..
And why I answered.. despite my low posting.. could very well be because I havn\'t been on this forum for a long time, and don\'t bother to answer every post I read.  Hope everything get\'s sorted. And as I said.. If vendors/builders don\'t do their job, it\'s alright to say it here.. I justt don\'t like the language. But then again, I might just be sensitive :P

I ordered some AutoMeter gauge fittings from Clive and he ordered them from America with me paying for them when they were ordered as they were special items.
AutoMeter gave the wrong prices to Clive when ordering them and they charged Clive at least double when they arrived!
Clive being the gentleman he is, would not hear of charging me the full correct price and took a considerable loss on the sale!
All I can say is that Clive is a legend! :god

Whenever I have PM\'d I have ALWAYS got a reply and very promptly.
I will deffo be purchasing things from Shyauto again. Top service.

Hmmmm might as well add my contribution to the pot here.

Id give a definite thumbs up to 2 tuners who i used in the past. Namely Jason @ super7autos (//www.super7autos.co.uk  or 01903810139)  and carl hayward (//www.mazdarotary.co.uk  or 07776304174) Both have helped me immensely over the last 9 months while Ive been trying to sort out the mess that another tuner made of my car. And both have always been available on the phone at silly hours when ive needed help, ideas or to be put back in my place!
Id have no qualms about recommending either of these guys to anyone for any work not only for the quality of the work but also for the quality of the service....
Id also recommend Tim & Matt @ RX Motors (01725516462) for spare parts although i havent used them to have work done, the serviceis very good and friendly and the parts have always arrived lightening fast!

Post by: nicksterrx7 on July 26, 2007, 01:25:49 PM
In the 9 years that I\'ve owned my RX, I\'ve tried a lot of tuners and parts suppliers and found the following:

Rotecknics - Superb technical knowledge and the work done has to date been excellent quality.  I do find the prices higher than anyone else I\'ve used and there always seems to be something that needs doing.  The best knowledge and good customer service. David R provides excellent one to service and sound explanations as to what needs doing.

ReWorx - Have looked after my car probably more than most and generally do a very good job. Friendly guys who are always busy.  They occasionally spend more time on the phone than under the bonnet but are always fair on labour charges and are very reasonable.  I like the fact I can loiter around and watch the work and ask stupid questions from time to time. Geoff and Max are talented tuners and I have used the rolling road on a number of occasions.  One fitting of a part that has since become questionable, but generally a good outfit who I will use again.

Hurley Engineering - Rebuilt my first engine.  A number of problems when the car was returned which had to be sorted else where.  The rebuild lasted 7 years (I do only 5,000 miles a year).  The rebuild would have lasted longer had new housings been used originally, but can\'t grumble.  Once bitten, twice shy.

Rotaryarts - Purchased a few bits and pieces over the years.  Generally a good service with speedy delivery.  Prices keen.  Had a bad experience last year while Gary was \'off-line\'.

Thames Valley MOTs - Dave enthuses RX7\'s and it\'s infectious.  His own RX7 drains the MOT center profits, but don\'t they all.  Good service, always helpful and excellent customer service.

BNR Supercars - Had my turbos from there this year.  Had to wait nearly 4 months.  Not ideal.  Customer communication poor but always courteous.  Te finished product however is worth the wait.  Top quality finishes all round.  If you want more power and like twins, this is the only way to go.  Very knowledgeable and skilled engineer.

SR Motorsports - Fast and efficient delivery.  Top quality parts.  I\'d use them time and again (particularly while it\'s $2 to the pound!).

i went to rotatecnics as when i got my car nearly all the work had been done by them and a cowboy that moted my rx7 fc mucked up all of the settings, they said would be about 1 hour max to sort everything and if they hadent sorted it they would know what was wrong, 30mins later they had sorted the car got the running isues sorted and sorted emitions and got the lean/rish mix right, i recon it was more like 45mins to 1 hour but they only charged me £30, went back a week later to sort out an exhaust prob and insted of just saying we can sort it they ran threw all the options and even recomended a few places for exhaust in america before i made a decition! seem good to me! but then i havent had this car longer than a month!

not really dealt with many, tend to agree with most people about Pip, he is very friendly and seems genuinly interested :) seems to lean more on the functional side rather than making it pretty as there is plenty you can polish in the engine bay.

I have had loads of work done by Carl and the guys at Haywards Rotary and always found them very helpful and always have time for their customers, very friendly and laid back.  Only problem is distance (120 miles there 120 miles back - I live in Basildon!)

I have found out that TDi in west thurrock also deal with Rotary engines so thought I would give them a try and would just like to say what an unbelievably helpful bunch of guys (sam/Shaun/Mark) with an amazing fountain of knowledge and very happy to sit there and talk to you for a long time

I got the car remapped with an HKS F-con V Pro on there recommendation and what an amazing transformation from the Apexi FC.

They put it on the Dyno got given some pretty amazing readings and ironed out alot of very annoying flat spots that the Apexi FC couldn\'t seem to deal with.

So either of these guys are very, very good.

The last friday dropped my rex off with a boost problem on the second turbo not working turned out it was a broken wire in the loom the bloke is a god I would never have found that in a million years. Compbrake

they are real nice to deal with which was a good thing but after that is the problem.
I bought a set of track rod ends off them for the car but they sent them with the wrong threads for the track rod. but cause i wasnt able to fit them i wasnt sure if they would fit as they looked to long. i sent the wrong ones back and they sent me out a replacement pair without any hassel. once they had arrived and i gave them a quick look and spotted that one of them looked as if they had had 2 seta of threads cut into them, looked like 1.5 then recut to 1.25. not exacly what i wanted to see. i tryed it on giving that one the benifit of the dout at this stage, and it sat loose. i then threaded both ends on fully and trial fitted them to the hub. first off at there shortest fitment on the rod they still left the wheels out by over 60mm. but even if they wernt to long, they were never rite as to fully tighten the rose joint to the hub i would of had to compress the suspension as there wasnt enough angle on them to fit. this was clear because as i started to tighten as a test it started to lift the hub up and would start to try and bend the arm and rack down. (hope you see what i mean) so i have now sent them back again with hope of a refund. this joint just isnt designed for the rx7 even though they say they are. maybe iv been unlucky but they really havent impressed over all

Post by: clive on July 23, 2010, 08:57:05 PM
Sorry to hear you have had problems,

Personally I have never heard of compbrake and lets hope you get your refund, however if I\'ve got it right about what I am reading you had rose joints that had been re-threaded to fit, then I would say your lucky as  this has stopped you using them, and potentially tearing off the track rods leaving you with no steering !

Not sure what your doing but if your RX-7 isn\'t a drift car using a bizarre geometry, or the rack has been moved, then stock track rod ends will be fine as there is no performance advantage to be had as new track rod ends will give steering thats just as precise as a rose joint conversion,

Hope this helps

cheers, i let all know the outcome. the car is a drift car but nothing other than standard at the min, only ajustments i made to the steerin is to have the bumpstops lathed back on the outer edge to allow increased lock. cheap an easy way to get more angle. i was changing the standered ones as they have given up, the rubbers split and dryed up. steerin in a straight line is a bit dodge on the backroads round my house.

I have used Carl @ Hayward Rotary for servicing and MOT and have found them good with no problems and always a cup of coffee or tea from a clean (reasonably) mug. In the 3 years I have used them only once was there a problem with the MOT at the garage next door when Hayward forgot to book the MOT as requested and had to come back a few days later. Prices seem OK and work is of good quality.

Have to say living in scotland has its down points, not having any rotary specialists is the main one!

However i must say i\'ve used Andrew @ Jimmy\'s rx7 for parts and found him to be absolutely brilliant. Very helpful, although he does usually get back to you in the early hours of the morning! Not a bad point, i just feel sorry for him staying up that late to reply to emails.

I\'ve used dragon performance once and if i\'m honest i cant really comment. they were ok i guess.

Hoping to get to see Pip soon as i\'m off to devon soon for work so i\'m hoping to be cheeky and pop in on the way down south. I\'d like some work done on my rex so think he\'s my best option and closest. :)

I am based in Poole and I have used Tim at RX Motors for a few parts and advice due to him being so close. I have heard mostly good reports on his work too. As for using a company to do the mechanical side on my \'99, I have been going to Hayward Rotary. I had to go there recently to have the turbo pack replaced and their work was exceptional. Clean, careful with the car, happy for me to stand with them and watch and learn, which for me is a great thing as I am trying to learn more and more about my car. The prices are very reasonable, and their knowledge and advice is endless. Carl is a brilliant guy, and all the guys there have been great too. They will be doing all the maintenance on my car for sure.

I have only been to one other specialist, and that was RE Worx in Portsmouth as I went there to have a compression test done as when I brought the car from Martin at Speedline Imports, it came with a compression test print out from RE Worx stating that the car had front compression of: 8.3 8.2 8.0 and rear compression of 8.0 8.1 7.9

As you can imagine, seeing that on headed paper from a specialist kind of made my already easy decision to buy the car, MUCH easier! So I did. However, when I got the car and took it to a specialist to have a general health check including a compression test, I received some not so favourable results. These results showed that my front compression was: 7.3 7.3 7.2 and my rear compression was: 5.8 6.1 5.9

As you can imagine, I was shocked by this and actually. I immediately spoke to Martin at Speedline and told him about the news and my concerns and he was incredibly helpful and arranged a date and time for myself and him to meet down at RE Worx to have another compression test done by them. He also arranged for an independent tester to leave his test equipment there to use too.

We met down there, and RE Worx did another compression test and the results were: front compression: 7.9 8.0 8.3 rear compression: 6.8 6.6 6.6 (quite different to RE Worx test equipment)

Note, that the independent test equipment was a Mazda calibrated and manufactured tester.

Now, obviously they aren\'t a mirror of what the other specialist got, however they are also nothing like (except the front) what they themselves recorded on their first test when the car was imported last year. The other compression test equipment showed results of - front compression: 7.3 7.3 7.3 and rear compression: 6.6 6.4 6.3

When I asked the question of why these were so different to the original results, I was told it was due to the temperature of the engine in which the original test was carried out. This was, according to RE Worx, "stone cold as the test was carried out the following morning after the car had been brought in and left overnight". They said that this was the correct way to carry out a compression test IE when the engine is stone cold. I wasn\'t satisfied, but at the same time, I didn\'t want to hand the car back to Martin as I knew I wouldn\'t easily find another \'99 spec so I left it as that.

I did however look into the "correct way" of carrying out a compression test, and found that a compression test, according to Mazda themselves, should be done 10-15 minutes after the car is turned off after being driven and operating temperature. This conflicts what RE Worx told me, and thus, I will never use them for any work.

On that note, if anyone else has knowledge that would contradict what I have found out about the correct way to carry out a compression test, please let me know.

Mazda guidelines (as per instructions on the unit) used to be to run the engine for ten minutes prior to testing. However, later generation testers may work differently.  I would speak to them again before it turns into an Internet lynch mob.

Although the results are different from what they were originally thought I wouldn\'t have said they were poor. From front to rear yes but from rotor face to rotor face they are prety close.

We know Carl will sort you out with advice as to when it needs rebuilding etc.

From my point of view I would install a WI system post IC, as this would clean up any carbon on the rotor for sure and possibly raise compression,

A friend of mine had compression of mid 6s on his first fd, installed WI, learned to map it himself on an apexi ecu and nailed the car hard every time he went out in it, the only reason he took the engine out was to Install a PP turbo motor! He says the engine held together so long and strong was because of the WI he added:)

Under data protection the club is not able to give out non members details, just the same as we are not to with club members.

However if you wish we can pass your e-mail address onto Jon then its his call to get in touch if he wishes,

Hope this helps

Hi Clive,

Not a problem, that would be good of you if you could. I didn\'t realise John was not a full club member that explains why I couldn\'t pm him.

Thanks again:Thumbsup!

Hi guys. Thanks for your feedback confirming my thoughts.

Matt, I\'ve sent you an email :)

On that note, I really should become a full member

Hey Jon,

Just replied, apologies for the slow response. Just finished wall papering the nursery for the arrival in April :)

Quote from: Grant Monkhouse;848851Although the results are different from what they were originally thought I wouldn\'t have said they were poor.

Thanks for that advice, Grant. Out of curiosity, what is a WI system? I assume by post IC you mean intercooler? What does it do exactly? And does it only work in conjunction with a Power FC as I don\'t have one. ll the car has is an AutoExe car back stainless exhaust and as of today, Apexi filters...

Water Injection, you don\'t need an apexi ecu as the system you can get is a seperate system that monitors your boost pressure and injects water at a set point. Ask Carl about them, he might say its not necessary but worth a look at, WI is the best way for power and max reliability.

IC is intercooler. WI cools everything. Inlet air, EGTs its good stuff.

I personally would not recommend you run water injection on a standard ecu as you have been told, but as Grant says Carl will sort you out.

Ah, thanks guys. I shall speak to Carl about this option.

As for not knowing what WI meant, GOD I feel stupid lol! Think my brain needs to wake up today.
